Thats just like Bettman , still trying the hard sell in a market that has no interest in hockey. This team won the cup and they still play to a near empty building on most nights.I wonder how many tickets they'll have to give away to make it appear a sellout for the allstar game?It is great for the fans that do appreciate the sport of hockey and for those people I'm happy.

The Ricky Bobby Center? Really?

All fifteen hockey fans in Carolina will show up. Of course they'll all be wearing Blue & Gold.

To compliment Bettman's wise decision, we should vote Pommers into the skills competition too. It would be fun just to watch him aim at the plates.

It is stupid for NHL to chose Raleigh, There are VERY few hotels or restaurants within any walking distance of the arena and the parking is the stupidest arrangement I have every seen. Bettman today talked about all the new stuff downtown however teh stadium is miles away from downturd raleigh

Been to many Hurricanes games? They do fine there, even when the team has a down year like this year. Not like Atlanta where 4000 people show up most nights.

The reason there are so many opposing fans in attendance is due to the transplanted fan syndrome. For example, 80% or more of the Pens fans that show up for games in Raleigh either live there and have on Canes jerseys every other night, or are given tickets by friends in the area.

I just think the arena location sucks from the overall reason for having an all star weekend wallbash.gifwallbash.gifwallbash.gifwallbash.gif

There really isn't anything near the arena, that is true. However, parking there is so ###### up that it is nearly impossible to get in and out of the place, and it's practically in the middle of a field. I have been to about 50 games there, and don't think i've ever been in and out the same way twice...

23rd In attendance is doing fine?

Who cares? The All-Star game is a joke. Bettman is never going to give up on hockey in the Southern markets. They can have the game. If it was held in Buffalo again, I wouldn't pay $10 to go see it. I'm not even sure if I would go for FREE.

They were one of the worst teams in the league for most of the year. Let's be realistic, they are not going to draw like say, Toronto but to say that they have 15 fans show up is way off base...

Not sure who said 15 fans show up.Any market where they have to give away tickets is in trouble.

Someone posted that above.

Again, I would have to ask how many games you have attended there? My father and I go to lots of the games, seeing how he lives in Raleigh and all, but I've never seen people just handing out free tickets anywhere. You can win them places and can ususally obtain a ticket or two on gamenight, but I don't know anything about giving away tickets as you refer to it.

I think that folks tend to generalize too much regarding the Southern NHL teams.

I was handed free tickets at the RBC once. In 2003 I went to a Sabres-Canes game, I was standing in line at the ticket office waiting to buy tickets with my wife. A canes fan walked up to me and asked me if I wanted two tickets. I told him I was just going to buy from the ticket office and he said no you don't understand I'm giving you these tickets. Note that this is 2003, nothing like this would ever happen between a Canes and Sabres fan now. :D

I know the above isn't what you were talking about, but you are right I don't see any evidence of the Canes organization giving away tickets to fill seats. They just let them go empty. Mid week games are a VERY tough sell for that organization with easily 5-6k empty seats even when the Canes are playing well.

Also, Canes fans will deny it to the death, but Stanley Cup tickets were indeed available for game one on the day of the game in 2006. I went to the website myself and had them in my shopping cart.

Well, let's see... The Sabres (and Canucks) have been in the league for 40 years (as of next season), Buffalo has hosted the All-Star Game exactly ONCE during that time (and hosted the NHL Draft once as well). Both times it was at the Aud. If Buffalo is as important a market as the NHL says it is, how come no All-Star game since the team moved to HSBC? How much do you want to bet that in 2012, it goes to Pittsburgh (due to the new building)?

I realize, they want to have it in a city that is exciting for both the players and out-of-town fans to visit, but Montreal has hosted twice since 1986 and some of the other "major" hockey towns that have hosted in the last few years have been Dallas, Miami and Atlanta.

Yep, the location of the game is a marketing tool. Since Carolina is having attendance issues, why not try to pump up interest by giving them the All-Star game? Since the NHL has no problem selling tickets in Buffalo (and we get to host the World Juniors next year), don't look for the All-Star game in Buffalo for a while - maybe on the Sabres' 50th anniversary in the league.......;)

Stop talking out of your butt. 15.2k per game is hardly a near empty building. Hate on them all you want, but dont give people bad info.

23 Hurricanes 41 624,873 15,240 81.4

Not bad for a team that was basically out of the hunt in December.

Hey my folks live in Holly Springs as well. Jesus, there must be a cop for every person living there!
