Stoner Posted April 5, 2010 Report Posted April 5, 2010 I hate to haul this out. I've been saving this up, I guess. The defenses of Ruff, the wonderment by some at the season the Sabres have had: I have to ponder how many posters here "discovered" the Sabres in 2006. Lindy has a long, long body of work here, with many established warts, but I can see how if you jumped on board post-lockout, you would still be giving him the benefit of the doubt now. I can see how these fans would not be able to see this kind of season for what it is in the same way someone who has watched the Sabres for 40 years can. I have no problem with new fans. The more, the merrier, as long as they stick around. I'm just trying to understand the "culture war" that seems to exist here.
NNYSABRESMAN Posted April 5, 2010 Report Posted April 5, 2010 I think talk of second in the conference is very overly optimistic. I mean really with the division title on the line, they already knew Ottawa had lost; and look at the performance against Montreal. Ya wer'e in the playoffs but does any one think for minute that this team is seriously going to kick it into high gear. I'm sorry but there is none, go for the throat, killer instinct here at all.

Lola, I had partial season tickets in the Sabres first season in 1970--beautiful grays in the Aud-- so this has nothing to do with new/old. But if you are going to be so negative all the time, what's the point in living. Most teams end up losing in the playoffs--indeed, all but one. If you can't enjoy now, then you'll enjoy nothing. That's OK, because being unhappy seems to give you pleasure. I don't feel that way--if that's a "culture war" so be it. But it's not much of a "culture war"--more of a personality clash-- you should have been in Florida in December 2000 working for Gore if you want to feel a culture war ... DD

The playoffs are a whole different animal. Why go for the throat when (I didn't want to have to use this as an excuse) but two of your top players are hurt, a huge enforcer/energy guy is out and they've already pretty much locked up the division. Clearly the last two games were not must win games. Come playoff time I'm confident they'll step it up.
ntjacks79 Posted April 5, 2010 Report Posted April 5, 2010 That's my point. In the past 2 months, what exactly have they done right, beat Tampa? I was happy about that but it didn't give me hope for the playoffs. Did they figure out the PP? Did they figure out Ottawa? Did they figure out how to get up for a big game? I am very excited we are in the playoffs and I am thrilled we are in 1st place, but it sure is an ugly 1st place. +1. I love that line... "ugly 1st place". I'm not sure the average Sabres fan is seeing just how pathetic the NorthEast Division is in comparison to the other divisions. Do any of us really think that the Sabres could have won another division this year? But even if you want to look at the glass as "half-full", as some are advocating, look at what "neutral" hockey people are saying about Buffalo. Mike Milbury came right out and stated on Hockey Night in Canada that there clearly was going to be a mad scramble for 6th place in order to get the right to play Buffalo in the 1st round. His comments were "Ryan Miller is dangerous, but I'll take my chances with these guys as opposed to Pittsburgh, New Jersey, or Washington".

They need to lock down the division, but after that I don't care what they do until the playoffs start. Regular season "momentum" into the playoffs is a bogus media/fan driven concept that means nothing, or no more than 5 minutes into the first period of the first playoff game. Beat, say Montreal, in game 1 and you know what that game on Saturday means?-- zip.

Of course you'd rather play Buffalo, it has nothing to do with "ugly firat place"--which is an oxymoron if I ever heard one. Washington is the President's Cup winner, Pittsburgh the defending Stanley cup winner, and NJ has Brodeur and a rich playoff history. Buffalo has been out of the playoffs the last two years. Who would you rather play? Duh. The NE pathetic--compared to what? Half the playoff teams in the East likely will come from the NE. You think the SE is stronger? I mean you can say the Sabres suck--which most do here--but don't make up facts. Did you graduate from NT in 1979? I taught there that Spring.
bunomatic Posted April 5, 2010 Report Posted April 5, 2010 You go for the throat at all times because you want it to become habit. You want it to be part of the culture of the team to not accept losing at anytime for any reason. You want the players to believe they can beat anyone and to erase all doubt that might exist in their minds. You go for the throat no matter what quality team you are playing because in this league,in this era,any team can beat you if you let up for even one minute. You go for the throat always because to do any less is to let down the people that support you by buying tickets or merchandise. You go for the throat because your teammates are counting on you to bleed for the team just like they will if thats what it takes to win.You go for the throat because that is the only way to have a shot at making the playoffs which is all that matters. You go for the throat because thats the only hope in ###### you will ever get your name on that glorious silver mug alongside all the other players that new the importance of going for the throat.

The NE division has "less superior teams at the top"... let's just say that. No one is saying the "Sabres Suck". What I'm saying, at least, is that the Sabres are far overrated as a Division Winner based on many factors - mostly offensive talent and work ethic. I believe this is Milbury's point as well... if the Sabres can't score and if they allow you to be really comfortable on the ice, why wouldn't you want them versus other teams? Yes, I graduated NTHS in 1979. Don't recall your name. What did you teach?

Yes, I graduated NTHS in 1979. Don't recall your name. What did you teach? To be honest, I think if anyone is overrated, look at Washington. Sure they have Ovechkin, but look at their division, is it any wonder they have 114 points. That division is absolutely pathetic. Washington is in for a reality check once they get past the first round. I'm not saying the Caps are terrible by any means, but put them in the NE or Atlantic and they are definitely not sitting pretty as President's Cup winners. The Sabres should do fine once the playoffs start, I don't know if they'll win in the first round, but I doubt we see performances like the last two games.
bunomatic Posted April 5, 2010 Report Posted April 5, 2010 Pep talk to be sure,I was just flappin my gums and imagining what it would be like if our guys had even a little bit of that attitude coursing through their veins or if that culture did exist on this team.Losings not so bad if you give the effort necessary to win.I don't always see the effort.Maybe the talents just not as good as we've been led to believe.

How is that a pathetic division? The Southeast division is the pathetic one. Swap Washington and Buffalo, and Buffalo is in first place in the SE (and Washington in first place in the NE). Swap Buffalo for either NJ or Pittsburgh, and Buffalo is fighting for first place in the Atlantic (and the swapped team is in first place in the NE).
spndnchz Posted April 5, 2010 Report Posted April 5, 2010 It's not just a lot of cranky shut-ins. HSBC Arena is one of the quietest buildings in the league, and there's been more booing this season than any in recent memory. Why the disconnect with your rosy view of how wonderful everyone should feel? Do u think if u say it over and over again that'll it'll be considered true by someone outside of ur home? The arena atmosphere this year was a bit under years past. But to call it the quietest building in the league? Please. More booing this season than any in recent memory? But we're one of the quietest buildings? Do people boo in "quiet mode"? The only thing that should be disconnected is ur life support system. Ur getting annoying and making this board un-enjoyable. The last few games (with playoffs clinched) at the arena were awesome, loud, exciting, fun games. Lindy's given them a plan of how to play, and he's held them accountable to it.

It's indisputably true. Booing doesn't count. Even the lapdog Buffalo media has pointed out the arena atmosphere. The dirty little secret is slowly being brought into the light. He-ll, even Rick pointed it out one night. "Maybe THAT will finally get this crowd going." But it didn't, of course. Feel free to ignore. It werx4me.
Canadian Sabre Posted April 5, 2010 Report Posted April 5, 2010 For anybody who thinks the HSBC is quiet. Go and watch a game at the ACC on a weeknight, then try and tell me that the HSBC is quiet. 60% of people who go to Leaf games on a weeknight are businessmen hoping to strike up a new business deal at the game. It's pathetic really. At least in Buffalo you see male & female, young & old, black & white, wearing jerseys. I see a lot of beautiful girls at Sabres games. Regardless whether they're there with their boyfriends or know anything about the Sabres, they're still there making noise and rooting the team on. Every time the Sabres are in Toronto, I'm in attendance with quite a few other Sabres fans and if we win(which we usually do against them) you should hear us on the way out yelling LET'S GO BUFFALO. Sabre fans are not even close to being one of the more quieter bunches in the league, just go and watch a game away from home and you'll see what I mean.

It's a little presumptuos to say that the HSBC is ONE of the quietest arenas in the league if you haven't been to more than two or three different ones around the league.
