Two or less Posted March 28, 2010 Report Posted March 28, 2010 Someone on another message board claims to have contacts in the know who tell him Luke Adam has been signed due to his junior team losing in the playoffs, thus ending his jr career. Adam will join the Pirates. Smart move by the Sabres if true.
Two or less Posted March 28, 2010 Author Report Posted March 28, 2010 No. I posted it because i think its news worthy if true, but also, Wildcat posts here. He's a reporter who covers the Portland Pirates. Maybe he will come in and say something? If it is true, i suspect we'll hear something by Monday afternoon at the latest.

thesportsbuff Posted March 28, 2010 Report Posted March 28, 2010 isn't that like, standard procedure? it'll still be 3 or 4 years before he gets an NHL call up.
LabattBlue Posted March 28, 2010 Report Posted March 28, 2010 ...it'll still be 3 or 4 years before he gets an NHL call up. Why do you say that? Plenty of higher end prospects make the jump to the NHL with 1 year or less at the AHL level.
inkman Posted March 28, 2010 Report Posted March 28, 2010 If my memory serves me correctly, don't many prospects sign with their AHL/NHL clubs for a stint after their seasons/junior careers are over?
tom webster Posted March 28, 2010 Report Posted March 28, 2010 If my memory serves me correctly, don't many prospects sign with their AHL/NHL clubs for a stint after their seasons/junior careers are over? Yes and I would expect Legault and possible Legace to join Adam. Adam is clearly the best prospect although there is concern about his skating ability or lack thereof.
shrader Posted March 28, 2010 Report Posted March 28, 2010 If my memory serves me correctly, don't many prospects sign with their AHL/NHL clubs for a stint after their seasons/junior careers are over? At this point of the year, they typically sign an amateur tryout deal with the AHL club, then they'll sign a real deal with the NHL team over the summer. I'm surprised we haven't heard of any random college guys getting ATOs yet.

shrader Posted March 28, 2010 Report Posted March 28, 2010 Bucky mentioned that the Sharks signed Nick Schaus from Orchard Park. UMASS Lowell? I know there were a couple Buffalo kids in Hockey East this year, but I can't remember who played where.

tom webster Posted March 28, 2010 Report Posted March 28, 2010 Actually got a pretty decent contract, not an ATO.
shrader Posted March 28, 2010 Report Posted March 28, 2010 Yes I got a really good laugh at a game this year thanks to him. This guy who sits a section over from me likes to yell out completely random and idiotic things. One game when Lowell was in town, he was all over Schaus the entire game. Each time he was on the ice, the guy was yelling directly at him "#6, you suck!" or "#6, I hate you!". One problem, Schaus wore #5 and there was no active player in the Lowell lineup that night wearing 6. Not only was the guy too dumb to read the name plate on his jersey, he couldn't even read the number. Then he did the same exact thing at the next game.

Xray Posted March 28, 2010 Report Posted March 28, 2010 isn't that like, standard procedure? it'll still be 3 or 4 years before he gets an NHL call up. If he spends 4 years in the AHL odds are he won't be an NHL player. I'm hoping he turns out to be a player because we need to shore up the 3rd/4th lines. Another player they should sign is Lagace who was one of the leading goal scorers in the QMJHL up until he got traded.
nobody Posted March 29, 2010 Report Posted March 29, 2010 From Wildcat's: Regier talks about recalls and thoughts on Pirates Are there any prospects who you would like to see in Portland? “The player that we’re in negotiations with now that would be the most likely consideration to join (Portland) would be Luke Adam. I think for someone like him to experience (pro life) whether he is playing or not, but being here and getting a sense of what’s involved.”

Lagace and Legault will both probably get ATO's but are considered borderline AHL prospects. The fact thet are negotiating with Adam shows they value him, though. His skating has been the issue but is considered improved over last year.

I don't know about Legault cutting it in the AHL as he went back to the Q as an overage player in the fall from Portland, but I would think Lagace has a shot at becoming a good AHL player.

From what I've heard its not a given that either player is offered a contract.
LabattBlue Posted March 29, 2010 Report Posted March 29, 2010 From what I've heard its not a given that either player is offered a contract. Interesting. Considering the glut of blueliners, but lack of forwards with any semblance of a scoring touch in the system, I'd be surprised if they passed on Lagace.

tom webster Posted March 30, 2010 Report Posted March 30, 2010 You heard wrong, Lagace will be given contract by next season. Didn't say he wouldn't just that it is not a given. Lagace is about 5th or 6th on their list and if he expects rookie max he will find himself back in the draft.

Lagace, Adam and Tropp are the 3 skill forwards in juniors/college. Tropp with probably play his senior year.

Its not just the forwards and not just the guys coming out this year. There is a 50 man limit to consider and they have to decide which guys in Portland they may cut loose, which guys they have coming in the next two years. Unfortunately, other then Kennedy and Ennis, none of the forwards in their prospect pool are considered top 6 material although Adam has made great strides. Tropp is considered NHL material, but as a 3rd line, occasional 2nd line player. The Sabres have always been careful about signing their prospects. They won't sign a player unless they think there is a chance he will someday play in the NHL. They prefer to fill out their AHL rosters with veterans, some of whom are on Portland's payroll. So far the only player I can recall they missed on was Dennis Wideman.
