Lindy owns the media

The alternative theory, of course, is that maybe Pommer (a guy no other team in the NHL wanted) and Roy (5'9", 180 and still producing 65-70 ppg) have just hit their ceilings and Vanek is an overpaid sniper who is having a down year.

those are all very reasonable theories.

does lindy get no credit for not having ruined the generational talent of myers? (at least not yet. )

Also, your theory ignores the fact that Lindy has gotten much more out of guys like Satan, Briere and Drury than they produced elsewhere.

OTOH, our erstwhile captains seemed to the #1 and #2 beneficiaries of the post-lockout game at a time when they were at the peak of their careers.

i think this just goes to show how difficult it is to capture something useful in this "[insert coach's name] doesn't develop guys like he should" -- too many variables (chief among them: the player himself).

The only guy I can think of who produced more for another coach than for Lindy is Max, and that's only been for 1 season on a really crappy team.

there's the rub. i don't watch atlanta hockey (heck, i can't even watch the sabres consistently), but i suspect that max is being given a lot more freedom down there to dipsy-do, dangle, and extend his shifts than we has here in the b-lo. oh, and there was the matter of playing with kovalchuck for a good period of time.

all that said, sometimes "change of scenery" is enough to jump start a guy's game without regard to any other variables.

Brian Kozial sounds like a Howard Simon "lite".Listening to Hamilton's lockerroom interviews have gotten more painful as time goes by. The constant fawning and laughing at players jokes(hey Paul, just a reminder...you're not on the team!). When the PP goes 0 for 5, asking what's wrong with it is not a tough question. Asking Lindy how come, year after year, his team plays with no heart, is. But "Hammer" will never unload that on Lindy. Too concerned about getting RJ's job when he steps down after this season (that's a scoop for ya by the way). Too bad for Paul that his play by play skills are minor league at best.He sounds like a robot and when he gets excited its as phoney as can be.

I actually heard Paul say, when discussing the topic of athletes celebrating, that "when I scored a goal, I never raised my arms I just lined up for the faceoff." Lol!!! yeah Paul, we all remember the big goals you scored, especially the ones in OT.

You're ignoring the fact that Ruff happened to have those players in the prime of their careers.

Ruff didn't develop those players anymore than Boudreau developed Ovechkin, Backstrom Semin and Green, or Rick Tocchet developed Stamkos.

I knew your man crush on the midget captains would shine through. Drury and Briere were wallowing on their respective teams when they were traded for. I'm not saying Ruff had a tremendous impact on them but to just write off his impact on their careers is foolish. Are those guys, Drury in particular, on the downside of their careers now a mere 2 seasons later? Perhaps but I'd like to think their current coaches have something to do with their lack of performance.

It's certainly fair to point out that Ruff got those guys in their primes. However, Ink is 100% right that it's unreasonable to assume that their primes abruptly ended and they went well downhill in one offseason, and to disregard Lindy's role in the huge improvements in their games that took place on his watch.

Also, the coach's role isn't just a matter of teaching skills and motivating guys to play hard. It's also to create a system that maximizes the production that is wrung out of his players' abilities. I think it's pretty clear that Lindy was able to do that with those 2 guys in particular as well as quite a few other guys.

I'll take your Myers comment as being made in cheek, and note further that Lindy should get some credit for figuring out how to ride that 20-yr-old horse all the way to the playoffs and to a Tallinder resurrection.

I agree on Max. Also worth pointing out that Max did have a few very productive seasons here before falling off the table after Black Sunday. He definitely needed a change of scenery.

no diggity, no doubt.

and let's not forget tallinder's contract year - the perfect storm for a rebirth of his norris-esque form. (remember when fans were seriously talking about that? i do -- although i think that talk pre-dated my time on this board.)

"MYERS!" yells Ruff. Brilliant coaching.

I put you on notice: if they have a good playoff run, I am going to compose an epic I-told-you-so. There will be video, sound, a laser show (with AC/DC, but not Pink Floyd) and I believe spndchz has promised a topless appearance. The board may crash. The clocks will all run backwards. Cats will lie down with dogs. DeLuca will applaud the team's toughness and Darcy's savvy. No one on the board will post cockamamie trade proposals or UFA signings because everyone will be perfectly content with the team.

Just be ready. Start hording the canned goods.

Is your space bar broken? Unreadable.

What players have left Ruff and prospered? None that I can think of. He's part of the problem, but not the whole problem.

He's part of the problem of being on top of the NE, 3rd in the conference, and having 2 60+ point scorers, 1 58(Pominville), 3 40+, one being rookie Tyler Myers, all around pretty even scoring amongst the rest, a silver medal goalie, and a gold medal himself for being an assistant for Canada.

Duly noted.

I am laughing so hard at this board today. I think everyone has a manic combination of spring/Stanley Fever. Weird, wild and wacky stuff.

How many players are allowed to leave the organization before being a UFA? Let's see what Paille and MacArthur do. They were able to escape Ruff at a pretty early age.

Keep an eye on Myers. I have a feeling if his game regresses at all next season more people will start pointing fingers at Ruff.

Define "good playoff run." Is it Miller stealing games as he has all season?

Ryan Miller. Need I say more.

Well, just in the past few years, I can think of Novotny, Pyatt, Bernier, Paille and MacArthur, plus Soupy and Marty (who were both admittedly about to become UFAs). And we shouldn't forget Grosek for Gilmour and Dumont, Gratton for Briere and Barnaby for Barnes.

And I'm confident everyone is going to keep an eye on Myers. I'm concerned though that the same posters who aren't giving Lindy any credit for Miller's development also won't give him any credit for Myers' development when Myers becomes a full-blown NHL star next year.

Myers came here ready to play, right out of the box, like a lot of superstars to be. I'll give Lindy as much credit for his development as I give Michel Therrien for Sidney Crosby's development.

As for Miller, what is it that you think Lindy did for him?

Myers is a potentially transcendent talent, no question about it. But his coach still has a role to play in his development -- showing him things on video (which by all accounts is a major focus of Lindy's), keeping him on an even keel, monitoring his confidence, and putting him in the best situation (e.g. pairing him with Tallinder, whom most of us were ready to dump) to maximize his potential. Same goes for Miller.

Again, since a double-blind scientific study in which Myers or Miller plays for Lindy and simultaneously plays for a different coach is impossible, the answer can't really be known. But it's not logical to hold Lindy accountable for a putative failure to develop other players but give him no credit for the development of star players -- especially when most of the guys who have been here and moved on had their best pro success here.

Is this really true? Just doing a quick glance at some stats before, during, and after Lindy's influence doesn't really show such a dramatic bump that it can't be explained by the league wide bump. Now, did Lindy's influence help create that league wide bump is another question.

Good points. Lindy also did a great job turning Dominik Hasek into a two-time Hart winner.
