spndnchz Posted March 20, 2010 Report Posted March 20, 2010 U guys are good at this stuff. I recently got a virus that after installing Norton got rid of, but it messed up my Firefox. I'm thinking I just delete it and start over. But, I have a bunch of bookmarks I want and need to save. Anyone know which file to save so I can reapply it later? :worthy: :worthy: in advance. And Ink, no I'm not infected.

ThePebble19 Posted March 20, 2010 Report Posted March 20, 2010 Bookmarks -> Organize Bookmarks -> Import and Backup -> Backup... Then just save it to your desktop. When you reinstall, go through the same process, but hit Import instead of backup. That should do it.
spndnchz Posted March 20, 2010 Author Report Posted March 20, 2010 I did that and can't pull it up again. Uninstalled and reinstalled. I'm f$cked. It's some kind of huhomolu.dll :censored: thing going on. I'm gonna take my bro's sledgehammer to this :censored: laptop very soon. Sooo :censored: pissed right now. :censored: :censored: :censored: :censored: My thesis is on this fu :censored: er.

Avira is one of the best things on the market in my opinion.(Deans recommendation from TSW and he works on computers for a living)and they have a free version that works very well, I know because I use it myself. Norton just doesn't get it done for me.
Cereal Posted March 20, 2010 Report Posted March 20, 2010 get a mac! For what it's worth, a sale this week (?) on Norton if you buy three licenses. http://www.buy.com/prod/norton-antivirus-2010-1-user-3-pc/q/loc/105/211970494.html?adid=17070 Is it just the firefox history that you lost? The second post made it seem much more tragic than that.

Cereal Posted March 20, 2010 Report Posted March 20, 2010 Yeah boo Mac! Why would someone want to own a computer that's virtually trouble-free? The thrill of overpaying by hundreds of dollars and feeling hip? :nana:
Stoner Posted March 20, 2010 Report Posted March 20, 2010 The thrill of overpaying by hundreds of dollars and feeling hip? :nana: I didn't know Macs were hip. But yeah come to think of it, I'm pretty much the guy on the right in the commercials. What is the cost of constantly dealing with viruses and crashes on PCs?
thesportsbuff Posted March 20, 2010 Report Posted March 20, 2010 I didn't know Macs were hip. But yeah come to think of it, I'm pretty much the guy on the right in the commercials. What is the cost of constantly dealing with viruses and crashes on PCs? I'm only 20 years old, but I've worked with PC's since I was 11. I was young and naive (like many people when they start using a computer) and downloaded all sorts of junk and got tons of viruses, so then I'd have to go back and learn how to fix it all. Almost ten years of this has given me a pretty solid knowledge of how to deal with not only viruses, but any other general computer problems. Then I bought a mac and haven't had to troubleshoot anything since.

Eleven Posted March 20, 2010 Report Posted March 20, 2010 I did that and can't pull it up again. Uninstalled and reinstalled. I'm f$cked. It's some kind of huhomolu.dll :censored: thing going on. I don't know much about PCs or fixing viruses, and dog's solution above might work, but before I'd do anything, I'd do this: head out and buy a cheap usb drive--like for $20--and save the thesis to it. Don't count on this drive lasting, in case the virus migrates over to that, too.
rbochan Posted March 21, 2010 Report Posted March 21, 2010 Grab yourself a copy of Avast Antivirus and Malwarebytes. Both are free and superb. Avast will require free registration in 30 days. You may need to install them in safe mode. In the case of Malwarebytes, you may actually need to rename it, as some malware will actually stop you from installing it if it catches the filename in memory. Scan the bejezus out of the machine. Also, avoid the Norton and McAffee garbage. I consider them malware.
wjag Posted March 21, 2010 Report Posted March 21, 2010 Lot's of good advice. With two youngsters perusing the net, our laptops and desktops get infected from time to time. I use three programs, malwarebytes, spybot and SuperAntiSpyware. I've found that no one app is all that, but a cocktail of them is pretty effective. Pick up on the tip, and scan in safe mode before they have a chance to catch your attempts to remove. Also download a version of firefox incase they have coopted your IE. I've found that to be pretty effective. I'm not a MAC user, but it's only a matter of time before these :censored: start going after them too.
wjag Posted March 21, 2010 Report Posted March 21, 2010 Also, avoid the Norton and McAffee garbage. I consider them malware. Interesting.. Why do you consider them Malware? I consider them barely effective, but not malware...
rbochan Posted March 21, 2010 Report Posted March 21, 2010 Interesting.. Why do you consider them Malware? I consider them barely effective, but not malware... Because the consumer versions expensive, and they're garbage. They also take over the system and slow it down to a crawl.
spndnchz Posted March 22, 2010 Author Report Posted March 22, 2010 Update. I put the thesis on a flash drive. This thing is all over the computer. I'm working on a different one now. Turns out my room mate downloaded what she thought was a windows security update, looked real, was fake. Installed a "security guard" program, took over the hosts file and still redirects me to google netherlands and other sites. I have virus doctor and the kind of trojans I don't like everywhere. :censored:
shrader Posted March 22, 2010 Report Posted March 22, 2010 Sounds like someone owes you a new computer
spndnchz Posted March 22, 2010 Author Report Posted March 22, 2010 Sounds like someone owes you a new computer Or I owe someone a virus. :o
shrader Posted March 22, 2010 Report Posted March 22, 2010 Or I owe someone a virus. :o I was going to add "get on that inkman" to my last post and now it seems even more appropriate.
inkman Posted March 22, 2010 Report Posted March 22, 2010 I was going to add "get on that inkman" to my last post and now it seems even more appropriate. I'll insert my flash drive into her USB port and see what happens. Sometimes it's not even detected.
Stoner Posted March 22, 2010 Report Posted March 22, 2010 My pocket protector feels funny. Is this real life?

Installed a "security guard" program, took over the hosts file and still redirects me to google netherlands and other sites. I have virus doctor and the kind of trojans I don't like everywhere. :censored: I had that one. It took me hours of hand-to-hand combat to get rid of it. I took a few tips from some internet sites on how to get rid of it. I think that was ultimately fixed with Malwarebytes in safe mode, but then again I could be confusing them.
shrader Posted March 22, 2010 Report Posted March 22, 2010 I'll insert my flash drive into her USB port and see what happens. Sometimes it's not even detected. Undetected? That must be one small flash drive. And yes, I am slightly disturbed that I took the conversation that direction.
