2006 Trade Deadline Thread

My point exactly. It's just funny how I think some people honestly think that Darcy sat watching paint dry all day. I am sure he tried to bring in a top 4 defenseman that would work nicely with our system, and the price was just too high.

Just what is too high? If it brings you that much closer to Lord Stanley?

I can think of a lot of prices that are too high. If we had to give up some of our depth up front for a rent a player, the price is too high. The object is to build a team that can win consistently year after year, not to stock up and take one run at the cup and miss the playoffs next year.

Goddfella, I'm sure this isn't your point but I am asking for clarification. Would you have been happier if Darcy had traded Mika away for a 2nd rounder around Christmas?

I don't have a problem with Darcy trading for a draft pick at the deadline. I think you are right and that deal was there before, but I prefer him to try to improve upon that deal over the course of the season. Heck by holding off on pulling the trigger, assuming Vancouver lost some games they wouldn't have if they had Mika, maybe the pick is a few slots better now than it would have been 3 months ago.

What was he getting offered for Marty? We'll never know that now. Whatever it was, it wasn't for what he felt Marty was worth. He is better off getting a 2nd rounder for Mika than having the 3 ring circus continuing into the off season (IMHO, even though I think Mika will pan out and be a legitimate starter in this league).

Eh, I don't really think a few slots more is that big of a deal unless the player we get ends up being amazing, obviously that remains to be seen. I am saying its like there was all this buildup and Regeir hung onto Noronen all year so he could go fishing for a bargain when the deadline came, and in the end it wasnt there for him so he trades him for the same thing we could have gotten for him 5 months ago. Its not that big of a deal, I am just mad he didnt get another defender. I think the last time the Sabres played the Hurricanes, the only thing (besides the fact we were playing back to back nights) that made them better was their defense. I still think their defense is better than ours, and that poses a problem in my opinion. I think our goaltending is a bit better tho. I just question the idea of not doing anything to help this team at the deadline. And no i am not saying make a trade just for the sake of making one, but I am not comfortable with Kalinin and Fitzpatrick out there. I mean we are one injury away from Fitzpatrick being a playoff regular...can you imagine that??? At least do something to bring in some depth

The change in where the pick was wasn't my main point, it was more of a train of thought kind of thing. But considering the draft pick at any point during this season has the exact same value whether it is obtained in October or March (the value to the '05-'06 Sabres is zilch unless it is packaged for a player) and it looks like the 2nd rounder for Mika was there all along; I really don't have a problem with Darcy waiting until the last day to see if he could get something better. I would actually have had a problem with him picking up a 2nd rounder for Mika after the forwards started dropping and the team had no roster limit issues.
