Chris Drury: Mr. Intangible

I didn't watch the game, but unless Drury made it snow in Vancouver, or brought the luger back to life, most of this thread is absolutely pathetic. Miller and Drury hugged afterwards? Who cares? Wow, the US wins a virtually meaningless game, and people want Chris Drury back. Funny.

The USA beats Canada in the Olympics for the first time in 50 years and it's "virtually meaningless."

What?

In Buffalo he became a top-10 force in the NHL.

You had me up to this point. He was never among the 10 best players in the league. Briere, Max and Drury benefitted more from the new NHL than any other players in the league. Their produciton spiked under the new rules and has slipped since. I like Drury as a player, but his legend has far exceeded his performance. Is he cluth? I guess. Is he a good NHL player? Most of the time. Is he a player you pay franchise type money for? Not a chance.

i've got no beef with a somewhat irrational impulse (i.e., a feeling (and i got that same feeling others here did when drury knocked helmets with miller)) reviving a rational assessment of an open issue. as for the latter, though, there is just no way that the economics of bringing drury back based on his current contract figures would make any sense. no way.

Yeah, that's the rub. We'd all love him back but not at his price.

while my man-crush on dude has faded (okay, healed ()), i don't think there's any need to guess on that point.

about that, there can be no doubt. 'sides, the team is already paying franchise money for a guy who can't bear up under the burden. :wallbash: (fwiw: i agreed with the team's decision to stiff-arm edmonton and won't get into the revisionist history that would be needed to find fault with that choice.)

I don't care. Not anymore. Sorry. I'll try to not rain on anyone's parade here. After all, if I don't care about the Olympics, why should I be discussing it? I just couldn't resist when the thread inevitably turned toward bringing Drury back.

From one hockey fan to another, I urge you to watch one of the games before you make up your mind on this. You may not care who wins, but from a sports appreciation perspective, the games are just great.

Right--it's All Star hockey except the players care.

Echo that. I didn't care that much who won Russia-Czech, but I enjoyed the game. PA, let yourself have some fun and watch the quarterfinals.

Echo the echo..

These games are highly competitive.. I figured there would be no hitting... Wrong...

I haven't seen a single post here that still doesn't make me want Chris Drury back.

Because you're looking at it from a fans standpoint. In a perfect world, it would be nice to add Drury to this team. I'm sure most people on this forum would even agree.

But, once you look at it from a business perspective, it makes it a very poor decision. A nearly impossible move for the Sabres. And you're still hungover from the glory of his one game wonder. He will have a few of those type of games for sure, hopefully has a few more this week, but, in a 82-game season and in the rugged NHL playoffs, very unlikely.

That girl you had the crush on in junior high? She had some kids. OK, seven of them. She now carries her groceries home in her ######. Whack off to your memory of her once in a while, but, for the love of God, let her go.

mario jr. agrees.

i'm too lazy to scroll back and see your take on the economics of the matter -- i.e., ink's statement that you can't pay drury franchise money -- what's your take on that?

I am choosing to remain blissfully ignorant of the economic factors involved. I know that monetarily it is pretty much completely out of the question. I'm simply choosing to ignore the money situation entirely and remain in dream world. I'm not going to write an essay on the subject because I don't think it warrants one. I'm going to let the re-ignition of my man-crush on Chris Drury fuel my position, which is one that doesn't care about the logistics at all.

:worthy:

After seeing tonight's USA performance, I got Chris Drury on the mind. He played a FANTASTIC game. His play on the PK, clearing pucks from Miller's crease and his leadership on the ice really stood out. He was even the first player to hug Miller and congratulate him on a STELLAR performance.

To quote Eleven in the Olympic thread,

"Intanglble was on top of Miller as soon as the last whistle blew. Wow. I'm betting NYR doesn't want him; who wants him back and at what price? (And this might become a separate thread.)"

So, what does everyone here think? Dismissing clear logic that the chance of him coming home is a million to one, would you want to see Drury back in blue and gold? What would you be willing to part with?

Me, I'd be willing to part with Derek Roy. At this point in his career, it seems like Derek Roy has hit a ceiling. I think it may be safe to say that what you see is what you get. I'm not sold on his ability to be a number one center, and I grow tired of the Maxim inspired play style has has adopted as of late (even if Lindy seemingly hasn't). The one thing Roy has going for him is that he's a good deal contract wise.

NYR would jump at the chance to have Derek Roy on their squad, as they desperately need more offense. Pretty boy Roy would love it in the city, even though his sausage may miss Clarkey boy.

Drury would bring us all the intangibles that we need to make a deep playoff run. His contract is ridiculous, but it's not impossible to accommodate. Drury wouldn't be afraid to take it to slackers either; I have a feeling all the youngin's would up their play with Chris on top of them in the locker room. I'd bet my bottom dollar Vanek turns things around. I'd even pair them together on the ice.

Let me put it this way: Who would you rather have on the team? Chris Drury or Derek Roy?

I would be willing to part with anyone who doesn't have the last name of Miller or Myers.

Drury's drive and passion for the game during competition is highly contagious, nobody does it better then Captain Clutch.

i like it - good for you.

my current bathroom reader is a book by a blogger (will leitch) called "god save the fan" (i'm actually liking it not as much as i expected i would). in one of the chapters, leitch expounds on the regrettable way in which modern fandom has evolved to a point where even relatively young fans spend a lot of their time thinking like mini-GM's instead of simpler, more pure things like trying to imitate a favorite player's idiosyncracies (shooting form, batting stance, goal celebration, chewing on a mouthgard in between whistles, etc.).

Enjoy! I will say that in watching that game I was finally able to appreciate his game again without it being overwhelmed by the pain of his free agency CF. It also of course made me sad, because he really should have finished his career as a Sabre. The Sabres and Drury's game have both suffered from his move to the Rangers.

Sounds like he nailed it on the head. This board certainly suffers from a certain obsession with OSP's money, and not as great an obsession with the actual games, IMHO.

And you had to work the mouthguard in, didn't ya? How Chris would work it against one cheek and then the other... sighhh.

Where does she put her groceries? :o

That's so funny. You can't say "######" on here. I will not reveal where she carries her groceries. It'll be exponentially funnier if people insert their own word.

Even though I think he was a -3 in the game; I would trade for that Crosby kid. Can we get him for Hecht and Rivet? Maybe we'd have to add another million in salary. ;)

Same here. I just hope against hope that Drury will return at the deadline. We have Grier. Miller and Drury are reconnecting at the Olympics. Some of Drury's best days were with the Sabres. His tenure with his boyhood dream team has not panned out. Come home, Chris. You belong in Buffalo.

I agree with that. I'm a 22 (23 tomorrow) year old man who still has to take stock of my fandom at times. We spend a lot of time on this forum picking away at pie-in-the-sky dreams with logic and numbers. There are posters here who draw ire for being on one side of that balance or the other. Most of the time I find myself on the logic and numbers side, but in this particular instance I'm going to let the dreamer fan in me win out. I liked Drury when he was here and I still like him now, and it saddens me to see him suffering in New York.

My number in sports has always been 23 (for my birthday), and he wears my number. I like the guy, I like how he plays, and I try to model my game after him. I skate hard, I sacrifice my body, and I'm a team player. I like Chris Drury and after last night it will be hard to get the image of him and Miller out of my head, because in my gut, that's the way it should be.

Fans will be coming to forums like this at a younger and younger age, and they will be influenced by their mothers and fathers who read these forums. They will be told their favorite player really isn't that great. It really is the one big downfall of having such a great place like Sabrespace to discuss hockey; we sometimes discuss it to death.
