shrader Posted February 12, 2010 Report Posted February 12, 2010 well the look was more like Cullen who is that. One interesting other side note is that the sabres and canes have NEVER done a trade and neither team has a player that has played for the other. Pitkanen would be a nice pickup given we have 2.5 Dmen on the team right now And if you think he doesn't know who Cullen is, you are insane. In the scenario you mentioned, the most you are ever going to hear is "we are going to do what we think is best for the team". There was no possible answer that was going to send you home happy. Really, if you're a GM, how do you react to a fan suggesting a deal?
Lethbridge Broncos Posted February 12, 2010 Report Posted February 12, 2010 Posted Today, 02:34 PM Great trade by Murray. Cullen fits that team perfect. Great skater who seems to get his hands on the puck alot and make plays. For a 2nd. REgier needs to give away some resources and bring in some new timber.
TheChimp Posted February 12, 2010 Report Posted February 12, 2010 What would you expect him to say? They're not allowed to comment on players under contract with another team. It potentially can be considered tampering. /facepalm/
matter2003 Posted February 12, 2010 Report Posted February 12, 2010 No worries...Regier will sit around and do nothing again...
darksabre Posted February 12, 2010 Report Posted February 12, 2010 Ottawa, Chicago, Minnesota, Calgary, and Detroit all making moves to try and make a run. And here we sit.
carpandean Posted February 12, 2010 Report Posted February 12, 2010 Murray: "We may address [the hole created by trading Picard] with another defenseman at the deadline." Spezza: "It's always a good sign when you add guys this time of year."
Stoner Posted February 12, 2010 Report Posted February 12, 2010 Murray: "We may address [the hole created by trading Picard] with another defenseman at the deadline." Spezza: "It's always a good sign when you add guys this time of year." Spezza's quote makes me wonder how much the Sabres' disinterest in Kovalchuk has contributed to the continuation of their slide. And the subsequent remarks by Regier. What message are the players getting?
static70 Posted February 12, 2010 Report Posted February 12, 2010 If by "few" you mean a new set of top six forwards and four blueliners to play with Myers and Butler? I will have to agree. Butler? Man, he would be out the door with Rivet and Montador. Please tell me you don't think he is actually any good.
bob_sauve28 Posted February 12, 2010 Report Posted February 12, 2010 Very good move by Ottawa. Myself, and i know few others really wanted Buffalo to land Matt Cullen. Tim Kennedy shouldn't be playing right now in the NHL... let's see if they do something about it and if they do, with whom. But, solid deal for the Sens. If they wern't the favorites before this to win the Northeast, i don't think theres any doubt now. We shall see about that. I like Cullen and think he is a very good player, but giving away defensemen is what got Ottawa in trouble in the first place when they collasped not too long ago. I would not have traded Sekara or Butler to get a rent a player. No way! Had they wanted Revit or Montadore, well, ok, no problem.
SabresRepublic Posted February 13, 2010 Report Posted February 13, 2010 "Bryan has worked very hard and we'll contend for years to come.... although we only want him for one more year." Despite Ottawa's recent success against the Sabres they know that the Sabres are doing exactly what Ottawa stated they want to do! Fact of the matter is that we have a head start on them. We have a well stocked farm system and let's be mindful of the fact that after we won the Phoenix game we had earned 70% of possible points. That is telling notwithstanding the current slump/fumk what ever you want to call it! The team right now is NOT beating itself up - that is real good! Despite the swoon, our statistical hubris is still the envy of many organizations and commentators are quick to point out that it is uncharacteristic of the level of play the Sabres can bring and did when they were acquiring 70% of the available points. Talinder said it best..."It’s tougher to be hunted than to be the hunter. Now we’re the hunter... We can hunt them down." Excellent attitude! This team has been meticulously crafted over a decade and tweaking it is an ongoing process but NOT one to sacrifice what is inevitably a well stocked organization about to finish the deal! Methinks, it could very well happen this year after the Olympics cease to be a distraction and skaters catch their breath and revisit the aptitude and skill that garnered the Sabres respect for their ability to play an uptempo game as the game should be played! This team will surprise now that we've had and given the opposition a taste of that up tempo game - only now we are the underdog! Go Buffalo Sabres! Go USA!!!
sabresnutinphoenix Posted February 13, 2010 Report Posted February 13, 2010 Ottawa, Chicago, Minnesota, Calgary, and Detroit all making moves to try and make a run. And here we sit. Darcy is eerily similiar to Gerry Meehan...
deluca67 Posted February 13, 2010 Report Posted February 13, 2010 Butler? Man, he would be out the door with Rivet and Montador. Please tell me you don't think he is actually any good. He'll be fine once he can step on the ice and not have to carry Rivet? Get him a NHL quality partner and let's see what he can do.
deluca67 Posted February 13, 2010 Report Posted February 13, 2010 So you agree that the team has changes to make? Weren't you having a hissy fit recently that Kovy wasn't brought in as a rental? Which way is it? Are they really close to being a Cup challenging team or are they a "few" players away? Kovy is worth more than a "few players." As it stands now with Miller seemingly losing his edge and ability to carry the team? It might be time for the Sabres to be sellers. Dump what contracts they can and start rebuilding, again. Might even want to consider trading Miller. By the time this team is good enough to contend he will be on the downside.

static70 Posted February 13, 2010 Report Posted February 13, 2010 Kovy is worth more than a "few players." As it stands now with Miller seemingly losing his edge and ability to carry the team? It might be time for the Sabres to be sellers. Dump what contracts they can and start rebuilding, again. Might even want to consider trading Miller. By the time this team is good enough to contend he will be on the downside. The rebuilding part I do agree with. If the organization continues down this path of refusing to make the necessary moves to better the team than I too believe it is time to make that decision. As far as Miller goes, there is no reason to trade or even consider trading Miller. Not that I am defending him or don't recognize his worth at this time, but to be honest, he'll be asking for the Trade in a year or 2 as he tires of the organizations failure to commit to build a winner. (ala Hasek, he will request a trade to a contender and probably dictate the terms of the trade lol). With Ottawa serious about making a push this season, and the Sabres reluctance to do so, there is no reason what so ever to not let some key kids from Portland come in and get some experience. Ennis, Mancari, Weber and Gragnani. I would bring em up.
bob_sauve28 Posted February 13, 2010 Report Posted February 13, 2010 He'll be fine once he can step on the ice and not have to carry Rivet? Get him a NHL quality partner and let's see what he can do. Schoop or the Bull Dog today made it sound like we should have traded Sekara for Cullen. I think that is insane. Yes, he is a good player, but look at what our future defense looks like. Talender and Lydman are gone after next season, I am assuming. Lydman IMO is an excellent player, blocks shots, makes good plays, etc. Our Captin can't skate, makes mistakes all the time and just looks old. Montedore is shot. The three kids we have back there are all that will be left next year. They are the future. Trading anyone of them would have been suicide, and just for a rent a player? Maybe Ottawa thinks Cullen puts them over the top and they can win it all with him. Ok, maybe he does, but does Cullen really put us over the top? I don't think so.

Cullen won't put anybody over the top. What's up with the love fest for the guy on here? Were not good enough this year to get it done, even if we picked up Kovy there isn't enough here to win it all. I believed this team was good enough before the last couple of weeks, but something has gone awry. Never been on the fire Lindy bandwagon, but I just bought a ticket. Time for a new philosophy and direction.
SwampD Posted February 13, 2010 Report Posted February 13, 2010 Wow. I thought I was an optimist. Good man! He actually said that "This team has been meticulously crafted over a decade." If that isn't a euphemism for what we've seen the past 10 years then I don't know what is.
shrader Posted February 13, 2010 Report Posted February 13, 2010 /facepalm/ Say what you want (or actually say nothing at all like you just did), but there there are GMs out there that do in fact believe this. Either way, publicly talking about other team's players like that is a recipe for disaster and will only lead to trouble.

You keep planning for the future while other teams go for it this year. Why would Carolina want Rivet or Montador? You have to give up something to get something. You are going to keep Sekera because you hope that he suddenly gets the fact he is supposed to play defense? Guys like him are e3asily replacable. Cullen makes them better and thats all that really should matter when you are talking about trading a guy that may develop into a number 4 or 5 defenseman.

This team is the result of one misstep after another with one admission to mistake after another. And no, it is not a well stocked farm system. There is not one sure fire top 6 forward in the organization although guys like Tropp and Adam may surprise.
Grinder42 Posted February 13, 2010 Report Posted February 13, 2010 Who needs Cullen who is bigger, younger and a slightly less skilled rental when DR can pay a higher price for a smaller, older guy who wants a contract extension as part of being traded...Ray Whitney. :D Problem is Whitney may be a scorer, but he is not moving from Carolina for more than the remainder of the season. He will be back with Carolina next season! Cullen is a nice center; penalty killer and can play physically. So, someone out there please tell me how letting Ottawa get a solid centermen to go with a lineup that has been kicking our tails for three plus years now is a good thing. Face the facts...TG is not going to spend to win......He purchased this team most of us can only hope to raise the capital to help Kelly and Company buy the bills. Which means maybe we need t be worried about the Sabres. We have solid gate turnout on this team. Our Jersey was one of the hottest sellers for 2 seasons and we have a cheap payroll. TG is lame duck owner and is not committed to winning. Larry Quinn is not committed to winning. Lindy Ruff and Regeir should choose to go elsewhere and use their skills.

Sekera is a fine young defensman, skates great, scores and makes mistakes like all defenseman do, and I think Lyndy is making a mistake not having him play more. Making Rivet captin seems to have been a big mistake. He's playing like crap but can you put your captain in the press box?
bob_sauve28 Posted February 13, 2010 Report Posted February 13, 2010 And as soon as Ottawa trades away a young defensemen Chris Campoli goes down for a month with an injury. This trade might hurt them
