BillHoppe Posted February 10, 2010 Report Posted February 10, 2010 Lindy on Rivet: "He’s not coming out of the lineup."
deluca67 Posted February 10, 2010 Report Posted February 10, 2010 Is this in the best interest of the team? Or, is it as simple as they don't have any other choice? Montador is as much of a mess now as Rivet. I consider this mostly an indictment of Sekera and Weber. If they can't break the top six considering the problems the bottom three have been having it must really say something about their play or what the front office thinks of them.
Lethbridge Broncos Posted February 10, 2010 Report Posted February 10, 2010 captain not coming out. large salary. has played better than at least 3 or 4 other guys on defense. what is the conversation about? Let me see, Rivet is the whooping boy? Ha. Hardly. THe whooping boys are: Vanek, overpaid. Hecht, overpaid defensive forward. Mair, washedup. Kennedy, good prospect but should be sat down. Ellis, has been to inconsistant. Stafford, work work hard enough. McCarthur, wont backcheck. Lindy on Rivet: "He’s not coming out of the lineup."

Lethbridge Broncos Posted February 10, 2010 Report Posted February 10, 2010 HEcht has had his moments this year, agree. He seems to be injury free, the last few seasons, he has been hurting. But he is 20 goal guy, we know that. Histoy has shown us this, with his old St. Louis and Edmonton days. But for the cash, yikes. They could do better at that salary. I wont pay a 20 goal guy more than $3mm per season, unless he registgered over 5 fighting majors per season or is on the PK first unit. +1, although I think Hecht (alone among the forwards you mentioned) is having a good year notwithstanding the undeniable fact that he is overpaid.

ParkMeadow Posted February 10, 2010 Report Posted February 10, 2010 Rivet's fight did seem to spark the team last night. However, he hasn't laid a legitimate hit on an opponent in recent memory, looks really slow, and has had too many giveaways. Needs to get his mojo back or he'll pull the team down further with him. First step is to ramp up the physicality. That is (or was) his game, so get back to the basics, Craig! How to deal with him is Ruff's perogative, not ours. BTW, they desperately need Kaleta back!
deluca67 Posted February 10, 2010 Report Posted February 10, 2010 +1, although I think Hecht (alone among the forwards you mentioned) is having a good year notwithstanding the undeniable fact that he is overpaid. -3, agreeing that Rivet has played better than three or four other defensemen is hilarious when you consider those defensman are Montador, Lydman, Paestch and Sekera. It's like being the prettiest host of "The View."
Lethbridge Broncos Posted February 10, 2010 Report Posted February 10, 2010 Park Meadow? Wow, that is a blast from the past. That place across from the ZOO? Cool. Good old Deleware Park. My kids played hockey for the Bisons at Nichols many moons ago - and the Park Meadow was always a good place to grab a drink or chix wings. Ladika66, Myers and Tallinder are one of the best of defenders in the league right now. Rivet is jsut behind them as a strong defensive player. HE plays the PP and PK. THe sabres are doing pretty well in the standings. Take a deep breath and breath into a paper bag if need-be, the team and Rivet are doing well and will win a series or two this playoff. How would you like to have Numminen, Nolan Prayt or Jeff Jillson or back there insted?

Even met my wife there - no snide comments necessary, as we're still together 33 years later! Moved away from Bflo many years ago and am always nostalgic for some of the old haunts. At least Cole's, Checkers and the CPG are still going strong, from what I hear.

Lethbridge Broncos Posted February 11, 2010 Report Posted February 11, 2010 Coles is awesome. Lots of good Buffalo people in there and great beer Checkers, is that still around? Wow. Best bar in the area, I'm there every Friday. Sorry. Continue.
notwoz Posted February 11, 2010 Report Posted February 11, 2010 Coles is awesome. Lots of good Buffalo people in there and great beer Checkers, is that still around? Wow. I was fond of the Alley Bar, on Gates Circle, down the street from the Locker Room. Now -- the Capitals have gone 17-1 since naming Ovechkin Captain. They apparently decided the previous captain, Chris Clark, was expendable and traded him to Columbus. Unfortunately, the Sabres don't have anyone in the same universe as Ovechkin on their roster. That probably explains why Rivet is going to stay in the lineup.
ParkMeadow Posted February 11, 2010 Report Posted February 11, 2010 Ah, yes, the Alley Bar! Went on my first official date with my wife there. A huge step up from the Park Meadow! As has been stated many times by many posters, likely no way Lindy does to Rivet what was done to him (benching). Also doubt very much he'd strip Rivet of his "C" then bench him. That leaves either trading him away or, as we all know is what will actually happen, let him try to work through his struggles and decide his fate at the end of the year. Hope he remembers how to check again soon! Interesting side story would be to speculate who else on the present roster has what it takes to step up as the next captain...
notwoz Posted February 11, 2010 Report Posted February 11, 2010 Interesting side story would be to speculate who else on the present roster has what it takes to step up as the next captain... Considering they gave Rivet the C almost as soon as he stepped off the plane (which spoke volumes about the leadership in the locker room), my guess is that there is a major leadership void on the team. My guess is maybe Myers in a few years and nobody else.
Lethbridge Broncos Posted February 11, 2010 Report Posted February 11, 2010 One has to determine what the standard is for an NHL captain. The criteria is commonly: experience knowledge on ice skill devotion to the team overall exceptatnce and standing among peers in the league off ice skill with media and fans willingness to give life for the team. TO me, Rivet, when he came to Buffalo, a team that has failed to make the playoffs for several season, fit the standard above. No one on the Sabres had any "balls." THey were a soft team full of overpaid pus$ys. Rivet, Kaleta, Gaustad, Myers, Grier and Kennedy have done much to refute this charge. ANother two piss and vinegar type at the deadline (Ethan Moreau type) coudl help this club take the pens or caps to 6 or 7 games. Then you hoep Miller gets hot and guys like Stafford and Vanek decide to play to their potential. Considering they gave Rivet the C almost as soon as he stepped off the plane (which spoke volumes about the leadership in the locker room), my guess is that there is a major leadership void on the team. My guess is maybe Myers in a few years and nobody else.
