rickshaw Posted February 10, 2010 Report Posted February 10, 2010 I'd love to see Mogilny's number retired. If Lafontaine is up there, then Almo should be beside him IMO. Mogilny was having a nice playoff during the 76 goal season, until his leg was snapped in half. Who knows what might have been if that hadn't happened. 4 one goal losses to Montreal that year! I love Mogilny, always will but I doubt he'll get his number retired. He definitely should be in the HOF. Consider how many games he lost to injury. He would have been the first Russian to 500 goals if not for injuries. Consider he played on some lousy teams, especially in Vancouver where there was turmoil for basically his whole tenure there. I miss Mogilny. I hate how he left the game. No fanfair. In the minors because of a ridiculous CBA clause and contract from NJ. Not the way a player of his stature should go out if you ask me. On a side note. I hate all these goofy kids wearing his number too. Average players should not be wearing 89. It's an insult. I am biased, yes, but I can take it. My son's name is Alexander. You get the picture.

You get the picture. 91 is popular with kids now.. Stamkos and Tavares wear it, I was trying to think why and could only come up with Federov but you'd think Bure's 10 and Mogilny's 89 would be just as popular if that was the point. That said, the only numbers that I think are no longer fair game are 99 and 66. They were iconic.
Taro T Posted February 11, 2010 Report Posted February 11, 2010 You've got me stumped with "Ducks"? Who is it? Dale Hawerchuk 91 is popular with kids now.. They were iconic. 91 is popular for the same reason 19 originally became popular - a lot of people wanted to wear 9, but only 1 person can wear it and after it starts getting retired nobody can wear it. Some guy wants 19, it's taken, so he takes the "next best" thing and that's the 19 backwards (91).

Eleven Posted February 12, 2010 Report Posted February 12, 2010 Was thinking about this last night; there are quite a few players whose contributions to the Sabres exceed Mogilny's. Nos. 5 and 6 come to mind (and no, I don't think they should be retired, either).
