gregkash Posted February 9, 2010 Report Posted February 9, 2010 With the Sabres = 211 goals, 444 points in 381 games played. NHL Totals = 473 goals, 1032 Points, in 990 Games Played. This includes of course a franchise record 76 goal season. He is 11th all time on the Sabres scoring charts, despite having played 122 games less than the closest person in the top 10. He was a +44 overall, and should be noted he is 4th all time on the Sabres for PP goals. Again with A LOT fewer games played then the leaders (Andreychuck, Perreault and Martin). Even more important than those numbers is the importance of Mogilny to the NHL as it is today. He is the first soviet player to defect, first Russian All-Star, First European player to become a captain. He ushered in a new era to the NHL. My vote is yes. His totals with the Sabres aren't staggering, but he is a future Hall of Famer and a pioneer in this league.. He is an unforgettable icon of the blue and gold and his number deserves to be in blue and gold for eternity. He hasn't officially retired yet, but I have a feeling that's coming soon, and I think it would be prudent by the Sabres to send his number to the rafters. But I am but one man, what say you?
carpandean Posted February 9, 2010 Report Posted February 9, 2010 That 1992-93 season, alone, makes it worth talking about. One shy of a goal-per-game!? I still find it amazing that he played in the AHL in part of 2005-06. It's tough when a player's career is split over two or three teams. He will definitely be a HOFer, but I don't know about retiring his number here. Probably will happen, though, as the standards don't seem that high.
SwampD Posted February 9, 2010 Report Posted February 9, 2010 If he meant that much to the NHL, then they should retire it. The Sabres shouldn't have to do it for them. Carp's right, either the standards for it have lowered or my idea of what it means to have a number retired was too lofty to begin with.

The standards have lowered. 16 and 18 never should have been retired. One can make an argument about 7 and 14, too, although I think the right move was made there.
LabattBlue Posted February 9, 2010 Report Posted February 9, 2010 I'm a broken record on this, but who cares... 2 & 11 should be retired, with 39 soon to follow. That's it! Nobody else is even close.

There were few more exciting duos than when Mogilny and LaFontaine were in their prime but, really, if you subtract Mogilny's '92-'93 season (76-51-127 in 77 GP) from the totals, his overall numbers in Buffalo (135-182-317 in 304 GP) aren't significant enough to warrant a jersey retirement. Certainly, in the pecking order of Sabre history, players like Hasek, Ramsey, Schoenfeld and Housley deserve more consideration than Mogilny IMO.
Stoner Posted February 9, 2010 Report Posted February 9, 2010 Let's not forget the Sabres have a Hall of Fame (whose ranks will swell tonight with the induction of Jim Lorentz and Joe Crozier). The Sabres media guide says this is the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a Sabre. Schoenfeld, Ramsey and Housley are already in it. Retiring a number should be reserved for the elite of the elite. By the way, why can't they put the names of the Sabres Hall of Fame players somewhere in the arena -- maybe on the wall that separates the 100 and 200 sections?

Honestly, I'd question #2 being up there while we're at it. And while we're mentioning banners, they do still have the Knox brothers up there, right? Those ones should always be mentioned before 11 and 39.
Trey Posted February 9, 2010 Report Posted February 9, 2010 I was a fan of Mogilny from day one. The impact of bringing him to the league can be seen on every team in the NHL now. He was also one of the most exciting players to watch in his prime. However, as most people have noted, retiring a jersey is for the best of the best and he just didn't sustain his '92-'93 numbers through his career like a candidate for jersey retirement should have. #39 on the other hand needs to be retired ASAP

If it wasn't for Hasek, there might have been a few season where we would have been the ultimate bottom-feeders.
LabattBlue Posted February 9, 2010 Report Posted February 9, 2010 By the way, why can't they put the names of the Sabres Hall of Fame players somewhere in the arena -- maybe on the wall that separates the 100 and 200 sections? The area where the Adelphia Zone used to be on the 100 level(somewhere around sections 107-108) would have been perfect as a starter location, but money talks and they turned it into another concession area. The area where Sabretooth's house used to be, could also be considered as they are just using it for merchandising, but once again money talks and Quinn would probably shoot down this idea.

Horton had his number retired due to extenuating circumstances. Instead of a long drawn out debate, I'l just say that I think it was the right thing to do.

Is there not a list near the entrance to the Sabres Store? Thought there was; could very well be mistaken.
LabattBlue Posted February 9, 2010 Report Posted February 9, 2010 Is there not a list near the entrance to the Sabres Store? Thought there was; could very well be mistaken. That is some cobbed together Buffalo Sports HoF if I remember correctly. Decent thought, poor effort.
FogBat Posted February 9, 2010 Report Posted February 9, 2010 Horton had his number retired due to extenuating circumstances. Instead of a long drawn out debate, I'l just say that I think it was the right thing to do. Yup! It sure was...
Lethbridge Broncos Posted February 9, 2010 Report Posted February 9, 2010 No. He was a flash in the pan. Half of his goals came in one season. He was a playoff dud for the Sabres. IF they honro him, they should honor TOm BArasso.
gregkash Posted February 9, 2010 Author Report Posted February 9, 2010 I'm surprised although I don't think I should be. To me what it takes to hang from the rafters is someone you can't identify the franchise without thinking about. I think a lot of you feel like it had to be upper echelon greatness. I see your point but I think hanging from the rafters is a team identity thing. I think to my generation Alexander Mogilny along with LaFontaine are two of the heroes we grew up watching.

Yeah, I'm not looking for a long argument either, but with what is known now about those circumstances, I really wonder about that banner being up there.
Taro T Posted February 10, 2010 Report Posted February 10, 2010 I'm surprised although I don't think I should be. I see your point but I think hanging from the rafters is a team identity thing. I think to my generation Alexander Mogilny along with LaFontaine are two of the heroes we grew up watching. I believe that Patty should be in the rafters along w/ Gilbert and Dom. (And that completes my list of who should be there.) I can understand the case for Tim and for Rico. Although I loved Gare, he shouldn't be there and I have no idea how Robert ever talked his way onto the wall ("but we're the 3 amigos, you can't only take 7-11"). Mogilny had ONE magical season in Buffalo and not a whole lot else to hang his hat on. Those of us a little older than you think of his fear of flying and being able to score on every breakaway he was on when his next season's contract was on the line and not being able to hit the broad side of a barn on a breakaway the following years. I was not sad that Mogilny was traded (I wasn't too pleased that he was traded for what appeared to be a puck bag and a couple of broken sticks at the time), but I didn't have a problem w/ him moving on. Should a player having his # being put up in the rafters be one that people were actually pretty glad to see go? Honestly, I'd rather see 10 in the rafters than 89. And no, I don't think either Rammer nor Ducks should be there w/ this team; I'm just sayin' if there is talk about Sasha getting there, there are others FAR more deserving.
gregkash Posted February 10, 2010 Author Report Posted February 10, 2010 How many contract years did Mogilny have?? He was drafted in 89, only played til 95. So really, that's probably only one contract. And unless the rules have changed (probable) his rookie contract would have run out in 92, right before his 76 goal campaign. I still vote yes but I respect the no vote.
Chief Enabler Posted February 10, 2010 Report Posted February 10, 2010 I still vote yes but I respect the no vote. I voted yes, merely on the 76 goals and that team. But, I realize when to say when. There are too many names and I hate when everybody gets retired when the Sabres have not won a dime. My favorite commitee overall is the Baseball Hall, damn tough to crack in there.

Good post, especially the "elite of the elite" point. I feel like we've really watered that point down with some of the more recent additions. I'd add that along with elite of the elite, longevity has to play a part. Honestly, I'd question #2 being up there while we're at it. And while we're mentioning banners, they do still have the Knox brothers up there, right? Those ones should always be mentioned before 11 and 39. I've always thought the same thing. I get the reasoning why, although I don't agree with it.
