tom webster Posted February 5, 2010 Report Posted February 5, 2010 Everyone puts DR down. Buffalo has the 3 most points out of all NHL teams since the lockout it could be a lot worse. And he let his 2 captains who led them to most of those points go. And we wait for him to decide when to go for it again.........
Mbossy Posted February 5, 2010 Report Posted February 5, 2010 And he let his 2 captains who led them to most of those points go. And we wait for him to decide when to go for it again......... He'll go for it again as soon as he grows a pair. If he doesn't think this team is ready then change it. If he thinks they're ready then make a move to send it over the top.
SwampD Posted February 5, 2010 Report Posted February 5, 2010 Darcy Regier and Lindy Ruff have this entire fanbase brainwashed. Somehow, they've actually got everyone believing that an annual 40/50 goal scorer would be a bad thing on your team. Good thing we got Mair and Kennedy, they don't score all that much but gosh-oh-golly they sure try hard.
shrader Posted February 5, 2010 Report Posted February 5, 2010 Another difference is that Devils goal is to win the Stanley Cup. This was a move so they don't waste a great year from Brodeur. I'm sure Darcy is on the phone right now trying to reach Bob Corkum's agent. I'll scout Corkum for you next week.
nfreeman Posted February 5, 2010 Report Posted February 5, 2010 By a price like that you mean... -A rookie winger that was in the RoY discussion until a couple weeks ago, still sitting only 10 points off the rookie scoring lead. -An olympic defenseman for the reigning gold medal Swedes. -Canada's WJC team captain. -A first round pick All for nothing more than 30 guaranteed games. I don't think it is a bad package, to be honest ... Once they announced they were dealing him, every day closer to the deadline they lose leverage. And it is obviously a rental, once word got out that he turned down $101 million, no one was going to sweeten the deal with the idea of signing him. I am not saying Atlanta hit a home run, but they got good young players and a first rounder. I suspect that is what everyone was offering and they picked the young guys they liked best. I railed against the idea, but what is that in terms of the Sabres? Stafford, Butler, Kassian and a No. 1? I think if I was Waddell I like NJ's package a little better, but ... I could have lived with it, but I would rather they take a run at Sharp, even if it is after the season. My thoughts exactly. To me that is too much to pay for a Kovy rental. The difference between Lou and Darcy is Lou knows when to get rid of youth, which ones to keep and which ones are replaceable. Darcy uses up all that they have to offer and then gets little to nothing for them when they leave. This gave me a cold feeling of dread. Thanks very much. It'll all come out. NJ gets a 100 day rental. Seriously, Kovulchuk just turned down a 10 year 102 million dollar contract. NJ can't keep him at those prices. 100% correct. This is just a rental. And he let his 2 captains who led them to most of those points go. And we wait for him to decide when to go for it again......... This is pretty unfair to DR -- or do you not think that his bosses were the ones who dropped the ball on the co-captains?

I think this is the right way to look at it. I also think that the posts above noting that Kovalchuk isn't exactly a natural for the NJ system, have something to them. Pipes, your comparison is apt, but I have a different conclusion; Stafford, Butler, Kassian, and a No. 1 pick is too much for 30 games. Kovalchuk would be certain to bolt Buffalo in the offseason, just as he is certain to bolt New Jersey. Is NJ still having attendance problems? Could this have been a move to sell playoff tix?

'Tis true, but I wouldn't say that Richer nor Mogilny were "exactly naturals" for the system either. It's a good pickup for NJ. With Brodeur you don't know how many more kicks at the can they have, and they have shown historically that they can fit 1 square peg into a round hole as long as they've got 17 other round pegs. I'd also agree w/ you that giving up Butler and Kassian in the package that it would have taken to get Kovy would be too much for the Sabres to give up for a rental and if I'm Atlanta I'd rather have the package the Devils gave up. I have no problem trading Stafford as I think he is simply too nice to play like the mean power forward he needs to be to be effective. I don't mind seeing him go as part of a package for a stronger player coming back because I have no doubt there is at least 1 GM/coach combination in this league that believes they can get him to play that mean game that would truly make him a top line winger and are willing to give up a good player to get that "potential." Before you say "no way", how many teams thought Gratton could be made into a power forward?
Ted's Hot Dogs Posted February 5, 2010 Report Posted February 5, 2010 The Flyers never learn they need a goalie not a forward. Teams don't get it you need a goalie to win. No you don't, Buffalo fans seem to seem that a goalie is the most important thing, news flash, really medicore goalies have been making it to the finals since the lockout.

Even gift certificates to Chef's, or a signed Rogie Vachon jersey, or something. Of course, Gratton for Briere is a small testament to what DR can do, but let's let some people just ignore that.

Sorry, I didn't mean you 11 particularily; it was more of a "general" you. I thought about writing "someone" there, but it didn't seem to flow as well. My bad.
BetweenThePipes00 Posted February 5, 2010 Report Posted February 5, 2010 Of course, Gratton for Briere is a small testament to what DR can do, but let's let some people just ignore that. I didn't like the Kovalchuk idea, but DR can't live off that trade forever. Sure, he has proven he CAN make a great deal, but he has also been too patient enough times to make the criticism warranted. Even I am getting impatient, and that is saying something. Pittsburgh, Ottawa, Washington and NJ now all have guys who were first overall picks ... if the Sabres are going to make up the talent gap with "balance," that is fine, but to do that you can't have holes. They still have holes. But I am not shedding any tears over this one ... it's a lot for a rental and even if Darcy had taken a shot I think NJ's package is probably more attractive than anything he could have put together ... anything he would add (Vanke, Pommer, whatever) would add salary, which I doubt Atlanta was looking for.

If we're going to keep hailing Darcy for that trade, then we should at least include the fact that essentially that trade ended up being Corey Sarich for Danny Briere. Still a nice trade, but a little less of a steal considering we actually gave up something in the overall deal. Gratton was a career bust, and Buffalo lost the trade brought him in. The Lightning got a pretty good young defenseman, who ended up winning a cup with them, in return for a big, soft forward. I know Wayne Primeau and Brian Holzinger were part of the Gratton deal as well, but looking at who became what, I call it as Sarich for Gratton, straight up. Hindsight is 20-20 though, but my point is Darcy took a chance on Gratton, that backfired. Thankfully Phoenix was ready to make the same mistake we did.

Stoner Posted February 5, 2010 Report Posted February 5, 2010 Barnes for Barnaby. Then Rhett and a pick that turned into Miller for Mike Wilson -- and Rhett helped fetch Drury. Sigh.

Wilbur Posted February 5, 2010 Report Posted February 5, 2010 Blind Squirrel meet Nut. How many Stanley Cups did that trade lead to? How many Cup Finals appearances? Like blind squirrel. Easier to catch.
Sabre Dance Posted February 5, 2010 Report Posted February 5, 2010 At least all the speculation is over, for this season anyway. But the question on my mind is when is Darcy going to make a trade -- a meaningful trade Darcy will make a meaningful trade as soon as he settles in with his new team, the Columbus Blue Jackets in the 2011-2012 season. Of course, he will miss the 2010-2011 season after being run out of town on a rail after the Sabres lose to New Jersey in the first round this year.
carpandean Posted February 14, 2010 Report Posted February 14, 2010 Hey NJ, how's that rental working out? He did have the game winner the other night. Of course, Bergfors has been better in Atlanta than Kovy has been in NJ. Niclas Bergfors 5GP 3G 1A 4P +2 (2 GWG) Ilya Kovalchuk 6GP 1G 4A 5P -1 (1 GWG) The funny thing is that the two games that NJ had won since the trade were the ones where Kovy has played the least! Still far too soon to say anything about the trade. Chemistry with a new player takes a little bit, which is why trading for him early was smarter than waiting to get someone at the deadline.
