Kotalik on his way to Calgary?

Saw this as well. I think Darryl Sutter has officially thrown in the towel. What the hell kind of trade is this? Sure Jokinen's contract is expensive, but seriously Kotalik? What are they doing? Is he thinking Stajan, Hagman, Kotalik, Ian White, and Mayers are going to replace Jokinen, Phaneuf, and Sjostrom? Seriously? I think Sutter is just shaking things up just for the sake of it because of their bad 9 games. But they won last night.

This is kind of where I appreciate Darcy's patience because these are some lousy trades coming out of Calgary. Sutter is just making trades to shake up the mentality of the lineup from this bad 9 game string, and I don't think he can fire his brother. But almost 25% roster turnover in one day? This is just silly. I predict Calgary misses the playoffs because of this and both Sutters will get fired after this year. Lousy trades.

Edit: Quick update, Dreger reporting Kotalik and Higgins for Jokinen and Prust. That's a better trade, but still I'm not sure I'd do it.

Calgary has to have something up their sleeve. I was watching one of their games recently on center ice and their intermission report on sportsnet they were saying Flames are very disappointed in Jokinin's play and how he doesn't fit. So i'm not shocked he got traded. I am shocked they got Kotalik and Higgins, two players who have been really struggling. They can not be done. Their centers now are Boyd, Stajan, Langkow and Conroy. That's even bad for some of the bottom feeders in the league.

People on forums keep saying Kovalchuk to Flames, that they are saving $$ and adding depth... but i don't see how he fits in their system. I'm thinking... Vinny L to Calgary. Just my prediction.

Well, that didn't last long in New York. Guess the Rangers figured out what we had known for a long time...if he isn't contributing to your power play with his booming one timer and he isn't scoring shootout goals, Kotalik is virtually a useless player 5 on 5.

Pretty much like Kalinin didn't last long either.

For who? Do they have anyone left that would fetch him?

Could just be young guys/prospects so Tampa can get rid of a whole bunch of $.

They may be able to put together a package but Calgary only has about $1.5 million in cap room after the trades so at the very least $5.5 million in salary has to be going back to Tampa.

EDIT: Looking at their salaries, assuming Iginla and Bouwmeester aren't traded, Langkow, Regier or Sarich would have to be moved. Ironic since both Langkow and Sarich played in Tampa. I still don't see why the Ning would move LeCavalier for that. The Sabres could put together a MUCH better package I imagine. Roy, Butler & Enroth?

He's 29 and has another 10 years on an $8MM per year contract. Last year he put up 67 points in 77 games. No thanks.

If the Rangers are only giving up Higgins and Kotalik? Why not offer a MacArthur and a prospect for Olli Jokinen? He is a UFA so you don't have to worry about long term. Maybe he could help the Sabres. He not my ideal pickup. He is a option at this point.

It's an interesting idea, and your proposed trade is pretty low-risk. However, Tom Webster has mentioned a number of times that the Sabres don't like Jokinen, and if this is true it's hard to see Olli's stay in Calgary changing their minds.

I thought Olli, when he was still a Panther, could help the Sabres. After this small stint with Calgary, I wonder if he is the type of player who thrives on a cellar dweller with no playoff pressure and tons of ice time with no defensive responsibilities.

I hope they would at least look at it despite their feelings. It's one of the situations where the investment is minimal but the returns could be staggering if Jokinen were to come to Buffalo and play as he shown. When it comes down to the trade deadline most of the players available for cheap are in the Jokinen mold. Veteran players who have seen better days.

Any of the parts from the Phaneuf deal could easily be included in any future deal.

Are you sure? I've heard on Fan 690 out of Calgary that the Flames would save around $5.2 (or something) million in cap space after both deals. They said their reasoning but i didn't listen to closely. On HFBoards.com, a Vancouver fan said exactly what you said, that Flames only save $1.5 million and Flames fans said he was wrong. They sourced capgeek.com.

100% agreed. When he was with Florida and Coyotes, i wanted him and probably even made several comments on this board to say he was my dream player to pick up. But, since he went to Calgary, i'm turned off. He's lazy, doesn't fight for the puck, is horrible by the boards and bad in the locker room according to the Calgary media. According to Fan 690 out of Calgary i was listening last night, the channel's hockey insider said Flames tried to trade him at the draft with no avail because nobody wanted him unless a worse contract was being send back to Calgary. They said they made several attempts of trading him and nobody would bite except NYR who have their own 2 problem childs. On a forum, people laughed at the addition of 2 lazy players Kotalik and Higgins, and i didn't see one Flames fan who was convinced either of those is more lazy then Jokinen. They said it's impossible to be more worthless then Olli.

It will be interesting to see how Jokinen now plays tonight. According to TSN he's in the lineup for their game vs. Philly. But Flames trying to find a 3rd team to finish the deal off. I guess Kotalik wants to go back to Edmonton....

Just a little update- apparently the hold up is, the Flames originally thought Ryan Callahan was also part of the deal. And since learning he wasn't, they said no to the deal. They are trying to land Kotalik and Callahan. They don't want Higgins. Doubt NYR trade Callahan.
