spndnchz Posted January 20, 2010 Report Posted January 20, 2010 http://pressherald.m...310214&ac=&pg=1 Sounds impossible? Maybe. But Brian Petrovek, the managing owner of the Portland Pirates, can dream. After seeing the success of the NHL's Winter Classic, the New Year's Day game between the Boston Bruins and Philadelphia Flyers at Fenway Park, Petrovek is hopeful the same could be done here.... ...Petrovek actually had another informal conversation Tuesday with Peter McFarland, the city's event coordinator, at the AHL Hall of Fame induction ceremony at Merrill Auditorium. Petrovek said the two had discussed an outdoor event a couple of years ago but the plan was dropped because of finances. According to McFarland, it would have cost about $300,000 to set up a rink on Fitzpatrick Stadium – the city's preferred site for an outdoor game because of its artificial surface. It cost $1.5 million to set up the rink at Fenway Park. "I think it would be a cool thing but I don't know if it's feasible or not," said McFarland. "It's definitely different from doing it at Fenway. There, they had 35,000 people watching. At Hadlock it would be 7,000. $42.86 per seat in either case. I don't see how it's not feasible. Petrovek is heading to Syracuse, where the AHL franchise there will hold what's being billed as minor-league hockey's first outdoor game Feb. 20. The Crunch will play the Binghamton Senators at the New York State Fairgrounds just outside Syracuse. They are using the same rink used in the first NHL Winter Classic in Buffalo. Petrovek thinks his team's affiliation to the Sabres could help secure the rink here.
elcrusho Posted January 20, 2010 Report Posted January 20, 2010 I voted for None of the Above!!! Thanks Monty
LabattBlue Posted January 20, 2010 Report Posted January 20, 2010 $42.86 per seat in either case. I don't see how it's not feasible. I think it would be a tough sell at that "break even" price.
rbochan Posted January 20, 2010 Report Posted January 20, 2010 It's being done in Syracuse next month.
spndnchz Posted January 21, 2010 Author Report Posted January 21, 2010 It's being done in Syracuse next month. I saw that somewhere before, uh, um, oh yeah, in my post Petrovek is heading to Syracuse, where the AHL franchise there will hold what's being billed as minor-league hockey's first outdoor game Feb. 20. The Crunch will play the Binghamton Senators at the New York State Fairgrounds just outside Syracuse.
shrader Posted January 21, 2010 Report Posted January 21, 2010 Isn't the original Winter Classic rink now being used in East Aurora?
korab rules Posted January 21, 2010 Report Posted January 21, 2010 Isn't the original Winter Classic rink now being used in East Aurora? That's what I thought! They put up a new facility behind the old mill, and I thought the Buffalo winter classic rink was the centerpiece of the whole thing.
Two or less Posted January 21, 2010 Report Posted January 21, 2010 Not exactly the same topic, but i know theres been talk in Rochester about the Rhinos soccer stadium hosting a game. I heard Amerks vs. Hamilton.
spndnchz Posted January 22, 2010 Author Report Posted January 22, 2010 I think it would be a tough sell at that "break even" price. You bring in $100,000 in sponsor/ad revenue and it's now $29. Better?
