tom webster Posted January 22, 2010 Report Posted January 22, 2010 Still counts $1.4 mill against the cap. If they make this move, salary will have to be dropped in order to make any other moves. I'm not advocating acquiring him, but this is incorrect. His salary is $400,000 more then Lalime. Acuiring him and releasing Lalime would result in less than a $200K increse in their cap number.(Cap is based on 193 days of season so actual hit would have to be calculated when trade would be made) For the record, I'm not sure Biron would be an upgrade over Lalime.
tom webster Posted January 22, 2010 Report Posted January 22, 2010 I'm not sure what that has to do with being a good backup though. Starting and backing up are two very different situations. I thought about that when I wrote my post. I think it's pretty much a wash. The guys on this team seem to genuinely like Lalime. You can see it in the celebrations after each game. He's always right out there chatting it up with Miller and a couple other guys. This is the one point that seems to be glossed over. Some guys just handle the back up position better.
LabattBlue Posted January 22, 2010 Report Posted January 22, 2010 I'm not sure what that has to do with being a good backup though. Starting and backing up are two very different situations. He was mediocre as a starter and was mediocre as a backup. Other than being a good locker room guy and a great interview, there is not much difference between him and Lalime.

Stoner Posted January 22, 2010 Report Posted January 22, 2010 Barring an injury to Miller, I don't see why DR would spend a dime to acquire a new backup. Say Biron could come here and the Sabres could earn five more points than with Lalime in goal. Who cares? I'd really like to fast-forward to Game 1. There isn't too much else we need to learn about this team. Well, a huge thing is going to be how Miller plays after his precious Olympics are over. :) Other than that... come hither, April.

The problem is when someone says the team has $2 million in cap space. Those statements are misleading.

You do so you are prepared if anything happens to Miller. The idea is to put yourself in a position that the season is not over if Miller goes down. Which is where they currently stand. Just for the record, I am not advocating the Sabres bringing in Biron. I hoping to do a bit better than that. I'm hoping to find a goalie that may be a current starter that a team may be ready to part ways with to make room for a younger guy. I haven't gone through all the rosters to see who may become available. I'm not talking just swapping backup goalies. I'm talking a serious short term upgrade at the position.

This doesn't really make sense to me. If you are going to spend money (and you would have to to bring in a 1A goalie) on the off chance that Miller gets hurt, why wouldn't you just spend that money on making the team in front of him better? That way, if he does get hurt, it is not as detrimental to the team, but if he doesn't, the team overall is even better positioned to go deeper into the playoffs.

You have to weigh and compare the options. It's seems like it would be easier to find a goalie measurably better than Lalime compared to bringing in forwards and defensmen to make this team Lalime-proof. You're talking definitely a top three forward and a top four defensive defensemen to give hope of continuing on with Lalime as a starter.

I just think that any way you slice it, if Miller goes down, so do our cup chances. So I would rather (I hate this phrase) just go all in and count on Miller being healthy and make the best team possible, instead of making a team that will "still be pretty good" If miller gets hurt. It's basically your philosophy on this team - The Cup or Nothing.

It's basically your philosophy on this team - The Cup or Nothing. I would generally agree. As badly as they did last year when Miller was out, they still just missed the playoffs. They've banked substantially more points this season than they had at the same point last year. As such, I believe that they could probably still make the playoffs if Miller goes down in the short run. However, if Miller were to go down for the season, I don't believe that any backup would take them to the Cup. So, while bringing in another backup who is marginally better (Tellqvist last year was a pretty cheap addition, who played better) would be nice, it would be low on my priority list.
