I had this exact same thought during the game, and I'm rarely one to question the lines....

I don't pick on players too much. I leave that for others. But Butler buddy, brutal...

Game thoughts...

- The 5 man units didn't last long. A lot of shuffling went on after one period or so including putting Butler back with Rivet.

- Good to see Roy warming up a little.

- Kaleta has enough talent to be a 15-20 goal guy....if he isn't knocked into retirement before he turns 25.

- The lack of respect shown by NHL players to each other in terms of the head shot is a shame.

- Miller...enough said.

- Refereeing was very inconsistent. The one non-call that I see over and over again is where the defenseman are holding up the forwards at the blueline as they chase in for the puck. I thought this was interference in the "new" NHL?

- Good start to the road trip!

GO SABRES!!!

Now do you believe..

Stink up the ice for 63 minutes and walk away with 2 points...

I'd rather they get the 2 points, regardless of how they played...had plenty of games last year when the deserved the win but came up empty...noone remembers how you played in the game at the end of the year...only whether you won or lost and if you made the playoffs or not.

ON a side note, Bob Mackenzie of TSN is reporting the following on his Twitter page.......

Wdr's Zack Kassian (Buf) gets 5 for CHG for vicious hit on Bar's Matt Kennedy (Car). Would guess a suspension is in order but we will see.

interesting. our #1 draft pick has some nastiness to him and looks like he's gonna get seated for his actions.

I just watched this hit.

Not good, not good at all...

As I was watching the game, I thought this was the worst game I'd seen a Sabres defenseman played all year. But he had almost 24 minutes of ice time -- 2nd most on the team. Lindy must have liked his game well enough if he played him that much. To my uneducated eye, though -- yecccchh.

Just came back from the game. What a fun game. Here are some thoughts:

1. I have no idea how the Thrashers can sustain long term with such poor attendance. There were maybe 5-6000 people there. I think the official attendance was probably around 12000, but seriously, it looked like no one was there.

2. The Sabres really travel well. Of the few people in attendance tonight, I think it was easily 60-70% of the crowd who were supporting the Sabres. It felt like the game was played at HSBC. It was a lot of fun, especially since the last time I saw the Sabres in person was Game 1 of 1999 Stanley Cup Finals.

3. As for the game itself, Miller was fantastic. One thing you don't appreciate when you're at the game vs. on TV is how difficult the saves he made were. Limited replays, so you don't know how hard those saves were, but I could tell he made some really tough saves to keep the Sabres in it. Even on the Kovalchuk goal, it looked like Miller was in good position, but somehow the puck had eyes or was deflected or it was a perfect shot by Kovalchuk, but I wouldn't put on Miller.

4. Vanek looks really really slow in person. I don't know if he's injured or what, but he has no speed at all. He looks like he's got weights on his skates, it's bad.

5. Stafford looked like he was benched in the third, and I'm not sure why. I didn't see any glaring mistakes, but he didn't play much at all in the third, not sure why.

6. Wow, the penalties. I think there were some ticky-tack calls, but it was tought to argue some of them. The Sabres took way too many penalties, and that's just unacceptable. 8 penalties, 7 of which were powerplays. Overall, the PK was pretty good going 6 of 7.

7. The PP scored a goal again tonight on Roy's OT winner, but they had to score on the 5-on-3.

8. Kaleta's really got some talent. If he wants to be, he could very easily be a 20 goal scorer and legitimate Claude Lemieux type player perhaps a Selke guy later on in his career.

9. Speaking of talent, Tyler Myers is really good when you watch him in person. He made that huge save when the puck got past Miller and that was just a beautiful move he made in the third period on that rush where he took it coast-to-coast and got that shot on Pavelec.

10. Pavelec is really good. He's the goalie of the future in Atlanta. He really played well tonight.

11. The defensemen, especially Lydman and Butler played really poorly tonight. Based on tonight's game, I expect to see Ellis in and Stafford scratched, and I would really like to see Sekera in because Lydman and Butler did not play well at all, and I think Sekera deserves a shot given their play recently.

Overall, it was a great game, and I had a ton of fun going to the game for the first time in a long time, and going to a Sabres game for the first time in 11 years.
