R_Dudley Posted January 18, 2010 Report Posted January 18, 2010 Sadly, what Kassian did is nothing compared to what Canada captain Patrice Cormier did yesterday. (Caution. This is not for the faint of heart.) Cormier should be banned from junior hockey for the remainder of his eligibility, and the pro leagues might do well to consider some sort of prospective ban. Wow ths guy is a POS especially doing this consistently away from the play on the way back to the bench when players would typically let their guard down. That is gutless and not my definition of captain worthy. I am surprised Canada would let this disgrace wear a letter.
Taro T Posted January 18, 2010 Report Posted January 18, 2010 Sadly, what Kassian did is nothing compared to what Canada captain Patrice Cormier did yesterday. (Caution. This is not for the faint of heart.) Cormier should be banned from junior hockey for the remainder of his eligibility, and the pro leagues might do well to consider some sort of prospective ban. Not sure how Kassian's hit is "nothing compared to what ... Cormier did." They both had a full head of steam (Kassian had started skating hard back at the goalline), they both caught an opponent that wasn't expecting the hit, and one left his feet to try to hit the guy w/ his shoulder in the head and the other threw a high elbow to get his guy in the head. Maybe Kassian didn't get him in the head, but it sure looked like he was trying for it. And if he wasn't going for the head it was a heck of a tackle. I don't follow Junior closely and it looks like Cormier is a repeat offender; but I don't see where the 2 hits aren't comparable. The RESULTS of the hits don't appear comparable, but the hits themselves were quite similar.
Eleven Posted January 18, 2010 Report Posted January 18, 2010 If Kassian wanted to dish out a clean* smack with his elbow, he would have. That, and the result, are the differences. Don't get me wrong; I am not defending what Kassian did at all. *(EDIT): By this word, I meant "clean" as in "free from clumsiness," not as in "it wasn't dirty."
darksabre Posted January 18, 2010 Report Posted January 18, 2010 Glad to see they're taking this to the legal system. Cormier needs to be tried for assault because that's exactly what that was. He could have killed Tam.

He could have killed Tam. I've never liked the notion of using legal systems to address on-ice (or on-field, on-court, whatever) incidents, but this particular incident is really making me reconsider my position on that. It's not like hockey is policing itself very well, so maybe the police need to do the policing.

Getting hit while trying to make a play on the puck and getting hit while skating to the bench are completely different.
carpandean Posted January 18, 2010 Report Posted January 18, 2010 I utterly disagree with this post. Getting hit while trying to make a play on the puck and getting hit while skating to the bench are completely different. The Cormier hit that people are comparing Kassian's to (and Taro was talking about) is the one in my first post, where the player had just passed the puck and Cormier elbowed him in the face. The two in the next post, where he hits players going to the bench, were previous incidents shown to demonstrate his history.
Eleven Posted January 18, 2010 Report Posted January 18, 2010 Lamoriello says suspension is not warranted for Cormier. That's just ridiculous. If I were the commissioner of the OHL, I'd suspend Kassian for ten. If I were the commissioner of the Q, I'd permanently ban Cormier from the league. If I were Darcy Regier, I would want Kassian to prove that he's learned from his mistake, and perhaps to sit down with a concussion victim or a counselor, or both, before coming to camp. If I were Lamoriello, I wouldn't want Cormier on my team at all.
end the curse Posted January 18, 2010 Author Report Posted January 18, 2010 That ###### Cormier needs to be given a lifetime ban, and should be prosecuted for attempted manslaughter.

Yes, I was referring to the hit in last night's game against Roy's team.

Kassian's hit has just as much potential to be as destructive though. At least the OHL realizes that they need to punish severely regardless of the end result of the hit. Guys will start to think twice before throwing shots like that if they know they're ###### if they even attempt it.

They were supposed to meet Tuesday. Anyone hear anything? I found this, but it just acknowledges that the meeting did take place... http://www.canada.com/sports/Kassian+meets+chief+over/2461273/story.html I would guess that a decision is made by the commissioner by the end of the week.

The CHL Top Prospects game is tonight, coincidentally in Windsor, and Branch probably doesn't want to overshadow that.

Per jeff marek of cbc http://www.torontosun.com/sports/hockey/2010/01/21/12563161-qmi.html Although I don't agree with the whole article, particulary the part that says it's in the same league as Cormier's elbow on Tam.
Eleven Posted January 21, 2010 Report Posted January 21, 2010 Kassian gets suspended for 20 games. wow. Per jeff marek of cbc Here's the TSN story. I wrote above that I would give 10, but I don't hate this decision. There seems to be a movement in the CHL leagues towards serious punishments for hits like Kassian's, maybe I didn't take that into account, and that's fine by me. The NHL doesn't take this stuff seriously enough, so the learning needs to begin at a younger age. Kassian had better learn from this. EDIT: I want to add that the 20 game suspension is based upon a finding that Kassian did NOT leave his feet when he hit Kennedy. One can only think how long the suspension would have been if the finding had been the other way.
SwampD Posted January 22, 2010 Report Posted January 22, 2010 http://www.torontosun.com/sports/hockey/2010/01/21/12563161-qmi.html Although I don't agree with the whole article, particulary the part that says it's in the same league as Cormier's elbow on Tam. Ya know, if those Canadian teams were just made to wear full cages like those sissies in college, maybe they wouldn't have guys convulsing on the ice.
end the curse Posted January 22, 2010 Author Report Posted January 22, 2010 20 games is too many...should have been 5 - 10. It was nothing close to what Cornier did.
