matter2003 Posted January 7, 2010 Report Posted January 7, 2010 TSN.ca has a pretty informative writeup about their midseason awards and some other pretty deep analysis... Here are some interesting Sabres tidbits: -Midseason Vezina Winner: Ryan Miller -Midseason ROY: Jimmy Howard, G Detroit----Tyler Myers is runner-up(you must be joking) followed by Tavares -Sabres have noone in the top or bottom 10 in the NHL in the following categories: TOI(forward or defense), Hits, or Blocked Shots -Gaustad ranks 3rd in the NHL in faceoff win% at 61.6, while Tim Kennedy is the worst faceoff man in the NHL, winning only 35.3%. Tim Connolly also makes the list at 10th worst winning percentage of faceoffs at 43.3% Hopefully Gaustad can start helping these guys out...Kennedy's numbers are just brutal..a full 2% lower than the next worst player, Evgeni Malkin... -Tyler Myers has given the puck away 52 times, tied for 2nd most in the NHL with Sydney Croaby, behind Jaro Spacek, who leads the league with 55. Imagine how good he will be when he gets more experience and doesn't make this list... -Patrick Kaleta ranks 3rd in the NHL in penalty differential(penalties drawn-penalties taken) with +15, only behind Dustin Brown and Zach Parise... -Craig Rivet has the 7th worst differential in the NHL with -11...however, Rivet doesn't seem like a player who will draw many penalties, so this probably is a little unfairly skewed since virtually every penalty he takes will be counted against him... Calvin Posted January 7, 2010 Report Posted January 7, 2010 -Midseason ROY: Jimmy Howard, G Detroit----Tyler Myers is runner-up(you must be joking) followed by Tavares I don't get it, what's the criteria for ROTY? Howard's been around for some time now - 2009-10 Detroit NHL 26 14 9 2 1 57 2 738 .923 2.23 1530 2008-09 Detroit NHL 1 0 1 0 0 4 - 28 .857 4.07 59 2008-09 Grand Rapids 45 21 18 4 4 112 - 1327 .916 2.54 2644 2007-08 Detroit NHL 4 0 2 0 0 7 - 95 .926 2.13 197 2007-08 Grand Rapids 54 21 28 2 2 146 - 1567 .907 2.83 3097 2006-07 Grand Rapids 49 21 21 3 6 125 - 1411 .911 2.70 2776 2005-06 Detroit NHL 4 1 2 0 0 10 - 104 .904 2.99 201 2005-06 Grand Rapids 38 27 6 2 2 92 - 1019 .910 2.58 2140

Imagine how good he will be when he gets more experience and doesn't make this list... I agree. Yet the give aways rarely are costly. And the fact that he carries the puck so much probably has a lot to do with it. I actually see this stat as somewhat of a positive and telling of the expanding role of this kid.

But, but, but -- DeLuca says the giveaway stat means the Sabres are playing lousy team defense and the only reason they're winning is because of Miller! Surely this can't be a hysterical DeLuca overstatement, can it?
Sabretip Posted January 7, 2010 Report Posted January 7, 2010 We're wasting our breath when it comes to criticizing Scott Cullen's impressions on Myers - for some reason, he either hasn't watched enough Sabre games to realize Myers' impact or is just being stubborn. In an earlier column at the quarter mark, he had Tavares, van Riemsdyk and Del Zotto as his 3 top rookies. I wrote him at the time, pointing out his glaring omission of Myers, and he replied only to say that Myers was on a stronger team with the league's best goalie and hadn't produced the numbers the other 3 had. In that same column, he left out Miller in his MVP picks; when I ripped Cullen for that, he came back with saying that he had Miller as his Vezina pick (although forgot to write that in his article).
