SwampD Posted January 7, 2010 Report Posted January 7, 2010 A perfect mid-week win - exciting, but boring in a good way. Five in a row is all right by me.
Calvin Posted January 7, 2010 Report Posted January 7, 2010 A perfect mid-week win - exciting, but boring in a good way. Five in a row is all right by me. Five in a row, finally!!
nobody Posted January 7, 2010 Report Posted January 7, 2010 That was something. In the end; nice win!
CallawaySabres Posted January 7, 2010 Report Posted January 7, 2010 was Vanek drunk on those two empty net attempts?? Wow.....
... Posted January 7, 2010 Report Posted January 7, 2010 It was nice to see them take care of the slow starts, and it was also nice to see them get more than two or three goals. Ultimately, I'm happy for the win, but I have to agree with Robitaille and Ray in that I would like to see more play-off type hockey out of the Sabres going forward here. It would be a shame to finish the regular season with a great record, but not be a legit contender in the finals, assuming they have what it takes to make it that far in the playoffs.
repster Posted January 7, 2010 Report Posted January 7, 2010 I like having Myers and Montador for 2.4 million vs. Spacek at 3.8 million. Yikes, Butler another -2 tonight...now at -12. Which forward deserves to sit when Kaleta is ready to go this weekend? Vanek was also -2 tonight. Could you imagine...
ROC Sabres Posted January 7, 2010 Report Posted January 7, 2010 I like having Myers and Montador for 2.4 million vs. Spacek at 3.8 million. Yikes, Butler another -2 tonight...now at -12. Eleven Posted January 7, 2010 Report Posted January 7, 2010 Just a few random observations... --The opening three minutes were nothing short of awesome. Took my father to the game tonight, and man, there's no one in the world that I would rather have sat next to me during those three minutes. (Actually, the whole game. We remembered the Aud, the games we saw when I was a kid (when he was the guy buying the tix), the players he remembered whom I don't remember, etc., and it was just cool.) --Miller just wasn't in synch with the rest of the team tonight. His puck distribution was awful. His icing in the first, then the distribution right onto a Tampa stick in the second, and then later in the second, the fake hold of the puck with a throw to Mac right before the whistle would have gone, but Mac wasn't expecting it. Great goalie. Great year for the great goalie. Weird chemistry with the team tonight. --I'm a Vanek fan, I really am. When I'm at a game, I usually pick out a player and follow him through a few shifts--I don't watch the puck, I watch the player. Tonight, I picked #26, and watched four or five shifts. I actually was disappointed. There were times when he "floated" when it was appropriate to float (e.g., when he was confident that his D would pick up the puck, and he needed to stay near the offensive blue line), but there were a few more times where he just seemed to shy away from the play. On one shift, he'd be an animal, all over the place, and on another, he'd be Miro. My next game isn't for a month, but I'll be looking at him again. I will say that I don't like him with Grier and Kennedy. That just seems like a waste and a mismatch. --LOVED the 1-2-3-4-5-we want 6 chant. So much fun. And I still really hate the sound system that invades our every opportunity to chat, cheer, or otherwise communicate with one another during breaks. I need my Bonnie Abbzug to cut the speaker cords for me. --Other than that, though, the crowd was a little light on enthusiasm. It was a "value" game, according to Sabre pricing, and accordingly, there were tons of kids asking their parents questions about why it's a 5-on-4 and not a 4-on-3 when matching minors are called with a man in the box, or why Paul Gaustad stands in front of the net, or why Sabretooth is at the other end of the rink (these all are actual questions I overheard). Of course, my father smiled, smugly, when I communicated my annoyance. But it might explain what even I perceived as a lack of loudness after three goals in 2:11. --All in all, freaking FIVE in a row. And soon to be six. And then seven. And on to inifinty.

Seriously, whose feet do I have to rub to get Sekera in and Rivet out? Oh, and good game!
Kristian Posted January 7, 2010 Report Posted January 7, 2010 I blame Rivet.... Seriously, whose feet do I have to rub to get Sekera in and Rivet out? Oh, and good game! Yeah, I think Butler's been looking a lot better than Rivet this year. Getting beat at the blueline, getting outworked in the corners, giveaways and out of position. Looks like time may have caught up to Rivet or he's playing hurt, but why would he, when you have Sekera sitting? That said, it's hard to complain when you've won 5 straight. Nice one.
Calvin Posted January 7, 2010 Report Posted January 7, 2010 I blame Rivet.... Seriously, whose feet do I have to rub to get Sekera in and Rivet out? Oh, and good game! Thank you for bringing up that argument yet again, I'm already tired of banging on the 'bench-Rivet' drum. If he had any sense of decency he'd fake an injury and sit out a couple of games and work out his issues. Maybe it's time Ruff had a chat with him about it.
BuffalOhio Posted January 7, 2010 Report Posted January 7, 2010 I like having Myers and Montador for 2.4 million vs. Spacek at 3.8 million. Yikes, Butler another -2 tonight...now at -12. Agreed. Add me to the list of people with a mancrush on Montador. He's pretty solid overall. Who's Butler's slow-footed partner? Oh, yeah, it's Rivet. The Captain is becoming a liability. Great start, but it was a pretty boring game, actually, because I knew the Sabres would win in the end.
LabattBlue Posted January 7, 2010 Report Posted January 7, 2010 Good 3-0 lead before you could blink an eye 5 wins in a row Scoring 5 goals Bad Butler/Rivet. It is time for Butler to take a seat and put Sekera back in. Stop playing favorites Lindy! Rivet...just pray they find a way to get him off the roster next season. Letting Tampa back into a game they had no business being in after the 3-0 lead If this team plays a so-called defense first system, how do you give up 39 shots to Tampa at home including being outshot 13-5 in the 3rd period when trying to "protect" a two goal lead? Vanek has some issues to work out. This has gone way beyond goal scorers are streaky.
end the curse Posted January 7, 2010 Report Posted January 7, 2010 The way I saw it... *Lydman showed us he's still a rock-solid Top 4 defenseman. That breakup of the 3-on-1 was nothing short of stellar, plus he contributed two assists and some strong skating and hitting. He deserved the 1st star as far as I'm concerned. *Connolly is back. 2 more assists, solid two-way play, and some good hitting. *I got home late from work and turned on the game at 7:12pm with 16:51 remaining in the 1st period. I looked at the score, saw 3-0 and figured it was a typo. Wow. *Was I the only one who was completely unsurprised that Tampa closed the gap after the 3 quick goals? It always happens that way, and after we've rallied from being down like that so often I was admittedly bit nervous how we'd hold up with the roles reversed. *We miss Kaleta. I know we're winning, but without him the lineup really lacks the hitting intensity. Seems he makes everyone else more physical with his hard charging style. *Miller was a bit shaky until the 3rd period when he settled in and looked like himself again. I enjoy seeing us win games that don't require him standing on his head...seems this team always just finds ways to win, and someone steps up when needed to make it happen. *Ruff deserves coach of the year thus far. He's perfectly tweaked the lineup, rotated the goalies perfectly, has the players believing in the system, and has the team playing their very best every night that we don't play Ottawa. *Myers doesn't make many mistakes, but boy when he makes them they can be doozies. Still, he's forgiven for that when he dominates the ice nearly every time he takes a shift. *You can see Vanek has completely lost his confidence. After he blows a scoring opportunity the camera will invariably show him sitting on the bench shaking his head with exasperation, and staring at his stick like it's cursed. Might be time to move him off that line. *Who sits against Toronto? I'm going with Ellis. I like his hustle and digging in the corners, but Mair simply can't be taken out of the lineup right now. *Rivet is our worst defenseman.
spndnchz Posted January 7, 2010 Report Posted January 7, 2010 Nice game. I too didn't have any worries about losing. Connolly now on a 7 game point streak. BTW he's now played in 82 straight games. Ruff has now won 465 games with one team, passing Glen Sather to take 3rd place in that category. Connolly:11 pts last 8 games Butler: 3pts last 5 games Hecht: 6 pts last 5 games Lydman: 3 pts last 5 games Myers: 4 pts last 5 games Pominville 8 pts last 9 games Roy 8 in 10, 11 in 13 games Now if TV ever got going. :wallbash: Did you know the Sabres has only lost one reg. game all year by a one goal margin? They are 13-1-4. Lead the league. Mmmm. Red Bull.
LabattBlue Posted January 7, 2010 Report Posted January 7, 2010 Hecht: 6 pts last 5 games Even better... Hecht has 5 goals and 12 points in has last 13 games and now has 20 points on the season! "How Jochen Got His Groove Back" is now showing at HSBC Arena!
Mbossy Posted January 7, 2010 Report Posted January 7, 2010 I thought Kennedy had a good game last night even though he was a minus 2. After last night it became eerily similar to another season we all remember. Although this time it feels more even keel on the good/bad overhappy/oversad scale.

Who knew they read my posts? 39 shots allowed? Out shot 13-5 in the third. Good thing this team knows how to shut the opposition down in the third. I like Tim Kennedy's game, that said he shouldn't have over a third of this teams hits in a given game. Out of the Sabres unimpressive 480 blocked shots this season Tyler Myers has 73. Which is 23 better than Tallinder who is in second. At least the Rookies have a idea of what it takes to win in the playoffs.

It's also tough to make adjustments to a lineup when you've won 5 straight. Rivet didn't look great last night, but he basically was responsible for the Sabres' second goal, too.
inkman Posted January 7, 2010 Report Posted January 7, 2010 was Vanek drunk on those two empty net attempts?? Wow..... *You can see Vanek has completely lost his confidence. He looked like such a spas during the last minute, something is very wrong in Vanek land.
TheMadCap Posted January 7, 2010 Report Posted January 7, 2010 I am ususally one to complain on and on about Lydman's play, but man, that break up of a 3 on 1 was spectacular!
MattPie Posted January 7, 2010 Report Posted January 7, 2010 --All in all, freaking FIVE in a row. And soon to be six. And then seven. And on to infinity. For values of infinity less than 60. :) (82-38 + 16)

The Sabres have been winning in spectacular fashion lately in every game setting proving they can do it all. The come from behind win against the Penguins was unreal and for Lindy to focus in on starting off fast and having his team respond immediately speaks volumes. This Sabre team is a talented very well coached force to be reckoned with and a team nobody wants to face in the playoffs.
Mbossy Posted January 7, 2010 Report Posted January 7, 2010 Anyone else hear a lot more ice level sound last night? Haven't heard it that loud before, I liked it. You could Monty, when Grier had the puck and was looking for an outlet, yell "Michael, Mike! I'm right here Mike!" and got the pass.
