Doohicksie Posted January 5, 2010 Report Posted January 5, 2010 Right now, Sekera's sitting, and he's played the wing recently, too. While you want Sekera to continue to develop, come playoff time I think I'd rather have Paetsch's services. If he gets picked up, good on 'im, but I kind of hope he ends up getting his playing time in Portland. He'll hook on somewhere, that's for sure.
nfreeman Posted January 5, 2010 Report Posted January 5, 2010 Does anyone know what happens to his paycheck if he clears waivers and goes to Portland? I think a lot of fringe guys are on 2-way deals, which would mean a roughly 90% pay cut if they get sent down, but I think these get phased out under the CBA as players get older? Either way, I kinda hope he clears and goes to Portland. It can't hurt to have him in the event of another rash of injuries on the D. Actually, this is why I'm a bit puzzled by the move.
end the curse Posted January 5, 2010 Author Report Posted January 5, 2010 I kinda hope he clears and goes to Portland. It can't hurt to have him in the event of another rash of injuries on the D. Actually, this is why I'm a bit puzzled by the move. The only way that this would make sense is if the Sabres intend to call up someone from Portland and need to clear a roster spot now that everyone is healthy. They obviously are now high enough on Mair's play that they don't want it to be him, so that made Paetsch the most expendable option. I don't believe he'll be picked up, and if that holds true this was a wise gamble. Paetsch would benefit from getting some ice time in Portland, and is good enough to call up and plug into the lineup if we get a rash of injuries. I don't see this being a monetary/cap issue. Not enough money involved.

You do realize since the lockout the Sabres have stayed under the roster limimt by one almost exclusively, with this year being the exception. Kennedy and Myers forced the Sabres hand a bit, by keeping those 2 the Sabres were at the roster limit with them being the only ones who could be sent down/back to juniors without clearing waivers. This move looks almost exclusively about the benjamins.

But he only makes $850K and they'd only save 1/2 of that, right?

carpandean Posted January 5, 2010 Report Posted January 5, 2010 Meaning that they are hoping someone picks him up so they don't have to pay his salary? But he only makes $850K and they'd only save 1/2 of that, right? He actually make just a hair over $1 million; his cap hit is $850k. If you mean that half the season is gone, so the other team only takes half, then you are correct. If you mean half like what happens on reentry waivers, where the new and old teams split the salary (a quarter each in this case), then no. There is literally no advantage other than the risk of losing the player on waivers to keeping a 23rd player on the roster when you have guys in the pressbox and in the AHL who are better options at both D and O. You use up cap space, that player gets no ice time and if someone is injured for just a game or two, you lose the flexibility of being able to call someone up without having to put the injured player on IR (7 day minimum), which could keep him out longer than needed. For example, say that everyone is healthy (23 players) and Miller stubs his toe just badly enough that he can't play (or maybe he needs a game to handle a personal event like Grier did.) He only needs to miss one game, but they need a backup. Guess what, they either have to IR him for 7 days, possibly keeping him out for 2 or 3 more games, or they have to waive somebody then (OK, OK, in theory they could send someone like Kennedy back down for that game because he doesn't have to clear waivers.) Sure, it's about money (that's part of DR's job), but that's not the only reason. I have no problem with this at all and don't see it as an unusual move for an NHL GM.

I don't know about his contract status, but I think it's a safe bet that he's on a two-way deal. He signed as a 6th/7th D-man so I can't imagine he had enough leverage to get the one-way deal. As for your comment about them being phased out as a player gets older, anyone can be signed to a two-way deal. There is no age restriction. The only time there is a restriction against making a two-way offer is when the qualifying offers are made to retain a RFA's rights. I don't see this being a monetary/cap issue. Not enough money involved. If he is indeed on a two-way deal, we're looking at a drop in salary from ~$1 million to $100K-200K. That's a significant amount of money. Since we're looking at half a season, that's still a $400K-450K savings if he stays in the AHL the rest of the way. Sure, it isn't much when looking at a Vanek or Miller salary, but every penny counts. Meaning that they are hoping someone picks him up so they don't have to pay his salary? But he only makes $850K and they'd only save 1/2 of that, right? Slight correction. $850K is actually his cap hit. He's making $1.05 million this season.
spndnchz Posted January 5, 2010 Report Posted January 5, 2010 Nobody has picked up Patches. He's on the ice practicing. Good news is Kaleta is practicing too. Miller getting the next 2 starts and LaLime playing vs Colorado.

darksabre Posted January 5, 2010 Report Posted January 5, 2010 Just checked. Nope. It's not detachable is it? I hate it when I lose my detachable penis. Then I have to buy it back from some guy in Chinatown, take it home, wash it off, and put it back on.
Cereal Posted January 5, 2010 Report Posted January 5, 2010 Nobody has picked up Patches. He's on the ice practicing. Good! I didn't want to have to say "Told you so" when we're down 2 D-men due to injury come Feb. or March. I'll always love you Paetsch

darksabre Posted January 5, 2010 Report Posted January 5, 2010 ! (NSFW) Thank god someone got it, or that was going to be real awkward. Also, if anyone understands why that particular show's clips are set to the song, I'd love to know.

end the curse Posted January 5, 2010 Author Report Posted January 5, 2010 Glad he cleared. Ever since we ran out of d-men in the conference final against Carolina I'm all for as much quality backline depth as possible.
inkman Posted January 5, 2010 Report Posted January 5, 2010 U don't remember me? I was drunk. Just checked. Nope. I'd like independent verification of this fact. I'll nominate myself (again).

gregkash Posted January 5, 2010 Report Posted January 5, 2010 I think someone said this earlier, but it's mainly for goalie injury reasons. If you carry 23 people (full roster) then if someone gets hurt for a game, you need to put them on IR before you can call someone up. Or if you have a lot of injuries. It's just good to have that last roster space for contingency in case you need to call someone up. The goal is to not have to have Sekera playing oFfense or sitting. You want him playing D on the Ice, especially as a young puck moving defenseman. In my gut, I think tallinder or lydman are gone at the trade deadline. Paestch is a loyal guy who doesn't complain about his role. I wish him well wherever he ends up.
