end the curse Posted January 4, 2010 Author Report Posted January 4, 2010 Good move. He's not a waste of money at his price, but a waste of money when he only plays 25% of the time. Why would we need to call anyone up? We don't need anyone. Roster is at 22 without him. We have 23 openings to fill. Someone will be promoted, and as I said in an earlier post my guess is it will be either Gerbe or Mancari.

Unless of course there is the mythical "trade" in the works that ends up sending two players our way instead of one. Doubtful, but you know it's nice to dream. :)

You won't find much. Hell, they've gone with 21 quite a few times too. If Paetsch is removed from the NHL roster, no one will take his place. Obviously, the big qualifier to this statement is if everyone is healthy.

B-) If Paetsch is going to play 20 games this season -- and that's his current pace after playing only 10 of the first 41 -- there's no point in paying him $1.050 million. The Sabres need the cap space.

Well, you are just speculating that no one will take his place. The Sabres have carried the maximum the last two seasons, so I think the odds are pretty good that they will continue doing this. We'll certainly find out soon enough.
LabattBlue Posted January 4, 2010 Report Posted January 4, 2010 The Sabres need the cap space. For what?

The Sabres need the cap space. Cap space, or just reducing payroll? If it's cap space, than are you suggesting they plan to make a move for a higher salaried player?

Someone will be promoted, and as I said in an earlier post my guess is it will be either Gerbe or Mancari. You don't need to have a full active player roster of 23. Technically you only need the 20 to be on the game roster.
end the curse Posted January 4, 2010 Author Report Posted January 4, 2010 Come to think of it, didn't Ellis and Gerbe get selected for the AHL All-Star team? That's in two weeks, so I would guess if anyone does get called up it's either Mancari or a fighter like McCormick or Cowan.
X. Benedict Posted January 4, 2010 Report Posted January 4, 2010 If I had to guess I think Paetsch will clear. Which will be good for the entire organization. I don't think Adam Mair would clear again.
Sabre Dance Posted January 4, 2010 Report Posted January 4, 2010 Some call it a luxury, others call it a player not good enough to play either position. But then why keep him around for the last few seasons? Well, I guess that's why they just waived him.......
darksabre Posted January 4, 2010 Report Posted January 4, 2010 If I had to guess I think Paetsch will clear. Which will be good for the entire organization. I don't think Adam Mair would clear again. I think Mair could clear again, just because teams are so full of players like him. But he has played considerably better so some of the bottom feeders like Carolina and Edmonton would probably love to have him.
Sabretip Posted January 4, 2010 Report Posted January 4, 2010 Who's getting called up then? I'm guessing a winger to add a spark on offense. Gerbe? Sekera has been relegated to the role Paetsch used to have - the 7th defenseman or spare 4th line winger if needed. I think the Sabres may have finally acknowledged that Paetsch's career is stuck in neutral and will be as long as he stays in Buffalo. It may be very much like with Mair's case where Regier is trying to be fair and allow another team to give Paetsch a regular roster spot.

BillHoppe Posted January 4, 2010 Report Posted January 4, 2010 Cap space, or just reducing payroll? If it's cap space, than are you suggesting they plan to make a move for a higher salaried player? According to NHL Numbers, the Sabres are 1.379 under the cap. If the Sabres need to replace a key part for some reason, if they want to "go for it," then they need a little more room.

We could pick up a $7 million dollar player after the Olympic break and be tight-roping the cap. (IMO, not happening, too close for Darceeeee)
bob_sauve28 Posted January 4, 2010 Report Posted January 4, 2010 Like Paille, he was expendable. I think, since the Sabres are so devoted to developing with with in, we just have a lot of players that are almost good enough, but not quit good enough to make it. Every year we have a new crop of younger players and Patache just got bumped

It's not something they requested. He hasn't spoken to Darcy yet. Much like the Mair situation, Bartlett believes the Sabres are probably trying to accomodate a loyal, team-first veteran.

Thanks for the scoop. I noticed the Sabres Edge reported that if he clears waivers he will likely be sent to Portland. If so, do you believe the Sabres will promote someone or keep the roster one under maximum?

They have plenty of options in Portland if they need someone. Right now, Sekera's sitting, and he's played the wing recently, too.
BuffalOhio Posted January 4, 2010 Report Posted January 4, 2010 I think they're just trying to give Paetscher a chance to catch on somewhere. Good for him, he's always played his role pretty well, whatever it may have been.

Good for him, he's always played his role pretty well, whatever it may have been. I hope that Patches gets a chance elsewhere to hold down a regular starting spot too - he has served us well and this is more respectful than cutting him. As far as the squad goes, Sekera does better at both jobs that Paetsch can do.. so I can see where Darcy is coming from on this one, I think!
