bottlecap Posted January 4, 2010 Report Posted January 4, 2010 I'd like a piece of the puzzle that people take for granted: the veteran sniper. I like Jason Blake and better still, I think somewhere along the lines I read he wanted to go to Buffalo and he'd be a good fit. Other teams in trouble would be good targets.. Ales Hemsky from the Oilers, Keith Tkachuk from the Blues and Bobby Ryan from Anaheim would be on the wish list. No thanks to "Rod the Bod" (-23) but Whitney might be good too.

Decent names to be sure, but you can rule out any eastern Europeans coming to play here in Buffalo. This organization has a bad rep with these guys.
inkman Posted January 4, 2010 Report Posted January 4, 2010 I like all the spirited posts, in particular Datsyuk, but I believe we all know none of those jamokes are coming here. If we could list players on bad teams that will be UFA at the end of the season we could probably have a more realistic debate.
BetweenThePipes00 Posted January 4, 2010 Report Posted January 4, 2010 Decent names to be sure, but you can rule out any eastern Europeans coming to play here in Buffalo. This organization has a bad rep with these guys. Yeah, the coach asks that they try hard and backcheck. You keep making Kozlov and Afinogenov = all Eastern Europeans. I think you are overstating it. And incidentally, Kozlov has been happy in Atlanta for years now despite never winning anything. What does that tell you? Why is he never complaining about going to a contender? Ink, you are probably right, but that is the problem ... there just are not many BAD teams with no hope at this point. Ray Whitney, however, does fit that profile perfectly.

SabresRepublic Posted January 5, 2010 Report Posted January 5, 2010 You weren't around a month ago. Just pointing out. Resting on laurels is not how to win a Stanley Cup. Sitting back and hoping Miller can carry this team to a Stanley Cup is a sure fire way to ensure it doesn't happen. This team needs to add offense in a big way. And desperately need to find some type of solutions for the pathetic power play they have. Scoring drops in the playoffs which isn't a good sign for the Sabres. They also need to sure up defensively. If there is a rent-a-player defenseman that can come in at a top four level it would be worth whatever the price. Montador is a OK 6th -7th defenseman. They need to replace Lydman and Rivet is a shell of what he once was. They need face-off help to go along with Gaustad (team only 48.6%). They also need to get far more physical and aggressive. They are dead last in hits and near the bottom on blocked shots and takeaways. That is playoff hockey. Giving up the body. The Sabres have specific players that are willing. That willingness needs to transfer to the entire roster. Teams don't win in the playoffs only because their scorers score and tough guys play tough. They win because their scorers score and play tough and the tough guys play tough and score. I see players like Vanek, Roy, Pominville and Connolly who seem unwilling to play the dirty part of the game. Then there is Stafford and MacArthur who are at there best when they play that dirty playoff style hockey. Problem is consistency. They don't bring it on a regular basis. Actually,..."maybe a month ago"... refers to an estimate of the elapsed time. Later this week on the 8th I will have started my 4th week of membership. There are 4 weeks in a month plus a few days so I was basically winging it timewise! I definitely don't think Sabres are sitting on their laurels - hardly! On the other hand Sabres do NOT need to play a desperation game lest they want unnecessary injuries. They need NOT be sucked into playing Ottawa & their ilk style teams at their level at all! We are skill. I think as the season progresses we all will be pleasantly surprised - except for myself! Vanek & Connolly starting to feel more comfortable as are the rest of the top six (which in the Sabre system is anathema because it is an interchangeable squad!) Hence we do NOT need the aforementioned vainglorious contract inflating statistical hubris that one dude brings to the table. This is NOT optimism. This is rational observation of a longstanding tradition of excellence - GO BUFFALO SABRES!!! P.S. Webmaster is screwing with the emoticons! I am an IT guy - I know how they do it!

VansTheMans Posted January 5, 2010 Report Posted January 5, 2010 If you dangle Roy in front of L.A., depending on what they're thinking and looking for, Dustin Brown is a distinct possibility. Two players with consistent numbers and great contracts. It'd be a clean swap.

I don't pass out! - I don't have blackouts! This is my only identity within this forum. I joined two other forums within the last month and I don't have a calendar marked with the dates of entry! The purpose of my joining was to share my thoughts on what I see as the big Sabre picture! We can agree to disagree civilly - else I am getting a gun!! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! stupid emoticons:
SabresRepublic Posted January 5, 2010 Report Posted January 5, 2010 Yeah but ... what happens when Connolly gets hurt and/or Kennedy hits the wall ... the Sabres have depth in a couple places but I am not sure center is one of them. That hasn't happened but what if the guys you suggest we rent get hurt and hit a wall? Answer: Blown opportunity! We've had pieces step up and deliver - the Blackhawks game comes to mind - there were others!

I am not saying they should not do ANYTHING, just that trading Roy straight up for a winger makes no sense, they would be creating a hole.
SwampD Posted January 5, 2010 Report Posted January 5, 2010 Now I know this is a joke. If I weren't me I would say you were me just fooling around. The question is "who are you?" PA Perhaps. SwampD? The crazy religious guy? Bam? This is tough. Or, are you me? I have had blackouts lately. One time I passed out and woke up in a Lacrosse forum. Who knew they existed. I really hope my jokes are funnier.
shrader Posted January 5, 2010 Report Posted January 5, 2010 If you dangle Roy in front of L.A., depending on what they're thinking and looking for, Dustin Brown is a distinct possibility. Two players with consistent numbers and great contracts. It'd be a clean swap. Thanks to this board, I can't see the words "Roy" and "dangle" right next to each other without laughing.
