21,000+ links. Most of them dead by now...

However, there is a great deal of information in the headlines and the excerpts. I never had a good way to display the archives, but now I'm getting a handle on it. Here is an example page:

http://www.sabrespace.com/buffalo-sabres/news/2009/12/

The question is - how can I present the information so that it is most useful to anyone cruising through yesteryear?

I would love to hear your thoughts.

Scott,

What you put together is fine for showing the headlines and excerpts. How difficult (read: storage space, volunteers to download info, and dealing w/ copyright issues (probably biggest issue)) would it be to basically create a Sabres specific "wayback machine?" THAT would be pretty cool (evem if it had to be on a pay per x basis).

If that isn't feasible (and I can believe it wouldn't be for various reasons), I would suggest running the archives backwards w/in a given month as that would make it follow your post archive format more closely.

yea, that isn't feasible...

Are you saying that the days should descend rather than ascend?

It seems more intuitive that way.

Also, I had no idea that this board went back to 2001. I was still working with alt.sports.hockey.nhl.buffalo-sabres at that point. I wonder if it's still around!

Are they searchable?

yes. or at least will be. right now the search box does only the titles, but I just need a few changes to make it all fully searchable (the original articles are NOT searchable).

They both seem to work. I like the way the headers reflect the era and logo that is being searched. Can the snot smear get swapped out w/ the blue or gold B w/ sword through it?

At what date can we consider the 3rd logo the new one? Should I wait until 7/2010?

I'd suggest we can consider the 3rd logo the new one as of the date it was painted on the faceoff circle at center ice.

I wouldn't wait until July to update.

I'd suggest making it sortable first by years (link) click the year, opens the archive of that year, whether hockey year or calendar year.

Could u rollover the article and get a quick synopsis like Yahoo et al?

Ok, well - the entry page would be:

http://www.sabrespace.com/buffalo-sabres/news/

which isn't designed yet. Not sure what you mean by sortable by years. But I envisioned a few different things. It could have the current news like the front page, maybe just the links for yesterday, and then a way to dig deeper into the archive by clicking on specific years (which would lead to a page that had the months listed). Also, maybe a calendar that would allow someone go straight to a specific date. For instance:

http://www.sabrespace.com/buffalo-sabres/news/2007/02/05/

will just show the links from that day.

http://www.sabrespace.com/buffalo-sabres/news/2007/02/

will show the links from the whole month. I disabled the whole year due to the sheer number of links.

Hockey year vs. calendar year is an intersting concept, but a hockey year archive may be tough to do. Does anyone think this has merit?

As for the excerpts - you want to hoover over the link and have the yellow box come up with the text? I'll consider it. Thanks for the feedback.

THIS.

Sorry I didn't look to the right of the page for the monthly archive link list. (I don't do that at intersections either)

Could it also be searchable by name of poster? Not sure what you envisioned by feedback. But we all love to call each other to task for inconsistencies and it would be fun to actually see how FOS we all are...

uhhh... you can already search the forum by poster or whatever you want.

This has to do with the news articles that are posted everyday.
