novascotiaguy Posted December 30, 2009 Report Posted December 30, 2009 Bench Miller for a week. His tantrum is uncalled for from a team leader. Lalime has proven the last month he can still play and the team seems to play better with him in net lately. Let Miller think about it for a few games watching from the bench. Are you crazy it shows that miller cares. Just nice to know we have a back up that can win some games for a change.
DR HOLLIDAY Posted December 30, 2009 Report Posted December 30, 2009 Bench Miller for a week. His tantrum is uncalled for from a team leader. Lalime has proven the last month he can still play and the team seems to play better with him in net lately. Let Miller think about it for a few games watching from the bench. The only way you bench him if he wasn't so pissed off man, that is a good thing to see from Miller, he is much more intense then most people think he is.
JJFIVEOH Posted December 30, 2009 Report Posted December 30, 2009 His tantrum is the thing that woke up that sorry team from the first period. Somehow I doubt the adrenaline started flowing when they saw Miller throwing his equipment around and pouting at the end of the bench.
DR HOLLIDAY Posted December 30, 2009 Report Posted December 30, 2009 Ruff pulling all the right triggers lately..... Yes he was........
SabresFan526 Posted December 30, 2009 Report Posted December 30, 2009 Wow! What an awesome game! Great game from the Sabres. Here are my thoughts: You aren't going to hear this often, especially not this year, but boy, Miller was not sharp tonight. I think he could have made saves on all three of the goals. He really was not on his game tonight. It happens sometimes, and when it does, the team in front needs to step up its game, and tonight they did. Great bounce back game by Stafford. He was they key cog with 3 points out of 4 goals. Great to see him respond with a fantastic game after being a healthy scratch. Now, we need to see this Stafford show up on a consistent basis night in and night out. I think this applies on the Stafford thread, but the fact is, this guy is talented and worthy of being a first round draft pick, but he needs to play like he did tonight consistently. His game is a lot like Vanek's early in his career when Ruff benched him the playoffs for not showing up and giving it his all consistently. Ruff knows how to push Stafford's buttons and did so extremely well. Great news is that Lalime is back. I think he was dealing with some health issues last year which may explain why he was so bad. Maybe it was the fact it was a new team and a new system. I don't know what it is, but he's been lights out since coming back from Portland. He's been outright awesome getting points in all 4 games since and 3 wins, and two fantastic performances against the defending Stanley Cup Champions. Great great game by Lalime. This is a great win for the Sabres that should give them a lot of confidence. A come from behind victory down 3 goals against the defending Stanley Cup Champions when your A goalie is not sharp and you pull him for your backup. What a great team win and comeback win. Awesome awesome game. Let's keep that momentum going.
Guest Sloth Posted December 30, 2009 Report Posted December 30, 2009 Talk about Stafford responding to a night in the press box! 2 goals, 1 assist, and +2 plus/minus. I'd say Stafford was the guy to bring thw W for the Sabres tonight, but Lalime was on top of his head. They both deserve the 1st star tonight.
JJFIVEOH Posted December 30, 2009 Report Posted December 30, 2009 Sorry, I like Miller and think he's one of the best goaltenders in the league. But he has always been a snobby crybaby. His interviews prove it. I said before the game Lalime should have started, I am a big fan of playing who is hot. I think maybe sitting the bench for a few games might help him get an attitude adjustment. He's supposed to be a veteran leader the rest of the young guys don't need to see his tantrums. I'm all for getting angry at yourself for a bad game, but do it in the locker room when nobody's around. That's 9 goals scored in the last 5 periods with Lalime in net. They don't do that with Miller in net. I say ride the wave as long as you can. B-)
DR HOLLIDAY Posted December 30, 2009 Report Posted December 30, 2009 Somehow I doubt the adrenaline started flowing when they saw Miller throwing his equipment around and pouting at the end of the bench. The guys has carried this team for most of the year, he would surely get a pass on a bad performance........I bet he was more pissed off at himself then anyone else, the team responds.

repster Posted December 30, 2009 Report Posted December 30, 2009 You could coach for the leafs...... I'll second that. Ruff just said he was fine with it. Just didn't want to get hit by anything. lol.
Rip Titwide Posted December 30, 2009 Report Posted December 30, 2009 After the three goals Miller let in he was definately PO'd about his own performance. Equipment throwing isnt exactly a rare practice by a goaltender who just got the hook.
paulsinator Posted December 30, 2009 Report Posted December 30, 2009 First post here, so here's some background: I was never a Miller fan, always thought he was overrated (they haven't made the playoffs for 2 seasons!), but this season I have to admit he's been excellent. Having said that, it looks like Miller finishes December with a .927 sp and Lalime with a .960. Lalime's win percentage is also better. I'm not saying this means Lalime is the better goalie, but I hope Ruff can find it within himself to go with the hot goalie a bit more so maybe Miller will be as good down the stretch as he has been in October and November. And I think Lalime gets credit for sparking the team by stopping 27 of 27, as opposed to giving up 3 of 11 and throwing equipment. Way to go Drew!

Stoner Posted December 30, 2009 Report Posted December 30, 2009 Got to love the play of Lalime these days.. Hold on buddy for one more period... I got a feeling we're going to be talking about this game for some time to come. :worthy: At least for the rest of the decade! Speaking of that, where does this game stack up, regular season-wise, in the 00s? I think I saw shrader. Dude who was standing up, all fired up, in the third. Dark hair. Big ole porn 'stache. :)
Rip Titwide Posted December 30, 2009 Report Posted December 30, 2009 C'mon people. Please dont start the goaltender controversy. This isnt Rob Johnson - Doug Flutie here. Miller is an elite goaltender who had a bad game, maybe even a couple. Trust me, he'll rebound. At best Ruff just feels more confident using Lalime to spot him, and now more confident that he can stop the bleeding when called upon. EVERY goaltender gets pulled and even (gasp) gets pissed once in a while. Even the shutout master Brodeur was pulled against our crew of (wanna be) offensive juggernauts at one point this season. Remember how comfortable we were in 06 and 07 when Biron would get the nod? We're just slowly creeping back to that type of confidence.

paulsinator Posted December 30, 2009 Report Posted December 30, 2009 He is the back up and thats it. Run with Miller just dont over play him. True... but there are 30 backups in the NHL and most have played more than the Sabres' backups over the last 2 years.
SabresFan526 Posted December 30, 2009 Report Posted December 30, 2009 He is the back up and thats it. Run with Miller just dont over play him. Agreed 100%. I will say, that with the way Lalime is playing and the fact that Miller will be going to the Olympics, it might be a really good idea to give Lalime more starts. You want to keep Miller fresh down the stretch, and Lalime has played extremely well this month. If he can continue this type of play going forward, the Sabres are in great shape with Miller having a Vezina type year and a backup that's playing extremely well. I still believe goaltending wins championships, and apparently the Sabres have scored 9 goals in their last two games, so maybe they have the firepower to compete with the Washingtons and the Pittsburghs of the world as they beat Pittsburgh tonight. Maybe there's really no need for a Kovalchuk after all. Imagine that.
novascotiaguy Posted December 30, 2009 Report Posted December 30, 2009 True... but there are 30 backups in the NHL and most have played more than the Sabres' backups over the last 2 years. Yes but not all teams have a goalie like Ryan miller.

I just think you should always go with who is hot regardless of who the starter is. I thought Lalime should have started before the game even began. He has played great the last 5 games he has been in and look at the way they supported him after the game finished. I have no doubt Miller will rebound, just go with who is hot. If a team becomes too reliant on one player, you're bound to get bitten in the ass.

You're right...not meant to be a controversy, just an observation that in the past Miller has been weak down the stretch, perhaps due to being overplayed...and this year could be a bigger concern if he plays in the olympics (which he obviously should!)

Miller is the man you got to come back with him fri night.
Eric in Akron Posted December 30, 2009 Report Posted December 30, 2009 Pittsburgh announcers stated that they didn't see Miller during the morning skate... can someone confirm or deny this?

And it can only push Miller to another level if there is one. I just think that the stats from this year and last, coupled with payroll kind of stamp Miller as the go to guy.
SabresFan526 Posted December 30, 2009 Report Posted December 30, 2009 Pittsburgh announcers stated that they didn't see Miller during the morning skate... can some confirm or deny this? From my understanding, the starting goalie never takes the morning skate for Buffalo. I could be wrong on that, but I believe that is the case, which is why he probably was not seen.
