nfreeman Posted December 30, 2009 Report Posted December 30, 2009 Where's that poster whose inlaws live in Pittsburgh and gets insanely worked up at the mention of the city or the team?
LabattBlue Posted December 30, 2009 Report Posted December 30, 2009 LOL! Talk about a sore loser with no comeback! Did that take a long time to formulate? "Oh yeah, well, well...the jerk store just called and they ran out of you!" Whatever Mr. Knowitall(your title not mine).

Can't freeze the puck in the crease. You don't have to cover the puck with your hand. No player besides a goalie can freeze the puck in the crease. McKee questioned it also. Does he not know the rules?
mercury Posted December 30, 2009 Report Posted December 30, 2009 That would be Friday. At least I'm sure 2 or 3 people will think that anyways. And those people will be incorrect.

I will say that this victory is extra sweet for me this morning as all the yinzers I know were blowing up my phone and email at 3-0. Walked in to work today with a big smug smolinski smile on my face.

I mean, I know they are drawing very well, have two of the top 5 players in the NHL, and just won the Cup, but does their success translate to the general public beyond the small base of hockey super fans? Buffalo is one of the few towns south of the Canadian border I've been around where a very large percentage of the public talks hockey smack, not just a small niche.

I don't live in Pittsburgh, but my suspicion is yes. The Pirates are worthless, so no one even thinks about them. So, that leaves you the Steelers and Pens, both of whom won their respective league championships. And, considering the Pens have two of the best young stars in the NHL in Crosby and Malkin, I think they're doing really well. They are also getting a new arena next year, and I believe all of their home games have been sold out this year. Basically, once the NFL season is over, I believe it's all hockey in Pittsburgh, so I think they get the attention of the fan base, but I don't know for sure, just pure speculation on my part. I still think Pittsburgh is a football town first and foremost and then a hockey town, but I think there's plenty of hockey support there.
Guest Sloth Posted December 30, 2009 Report Posted December 30, 2009 I hope Lindy gives more playing time to Lalime. Better to keep Miller fresh and Lalime will be sharper with more action. He's shown he can win games too. PTR W/ Lalime's level of play as of late, I don't mind Miller going two in a row and taking a night off. It's a good rotation to have if a backup is reliable, and the players up front have complete confidence in him. In Lalime's last 4 games, his teammates have been swarming him w/ excitement after the final buzzer. I think that is a sign of confidence, perhaps even a HINT of Biron protecting the net confidence...

Well there were considerably more people at the Penguins Cup parade then the Steelers parade. . This is a sports city for sure. Hockey dominates the sports headlines 6 days a week with football on the 7th day. Even casual hockey fans are pretty knowledgeable. IMO they are spoiled pricks.

Fans are the same around the world. They have arguably the best team and best players in the NHL. When they were dominating, the Pens were playing an AHL team. Then it began to change with the penalty shot. All of a sudden, the conquering heros couldn't hit the net. MAF can't get a shutout. Letang is awful. The PP is awful. Malkin is awful. How come they can't beat Lalime.. Etc.. Classic stuff. Pretty entertaining read.

I have and always will go with the Sabres first and Bills second. Buffalo is definitely a hockey town, but if the Bills haven't been a sub .500 team for the past decade, I think most people in the area would be talking about the Bills more than the Sabres during the football season. The Sabres organization has shown a high level of devotion to the fans, where as the Bills organization has not. And this has had a huge impact on how people feel about the teams in Buffalo.
carpandean Posted December 30, 2009 Report Posted December 30, 2009 Guastad is listed as Captain??? Correct. Rivet is too, but still funny. It's also interesting that he led the forwards in TIO, second on the team to only Myers. it was quite a goal, to be sure. i've never played the game at any level other than street hockey, so i'm in no position to criticize, but what popped into my head when i saw the highlights was: why not just bury that rebound on the backhand? The puck was bouncing as it came to his backhand. In general, it's easier to mess up a backhand, but especially when it's bouncing. He settled it as he brought to the forehand for a simple tap in. However, I thought the same thing at the time. He elevated the shot, so Fleury had no chance, but imagine if he hadn't and it had hit Fleury's stick instead.
end the curse Posted December 30, 2009 Report Posted December 30, 2009 A couple things to mention that may have slipped under the radar: How beautiful was Connolly's pass to Poms for the GWG? He's really stepped up his game, and is even winning more faceoffs. Hecht with 3 hits, the Carruba collision of the game, and winning 4/7 faceoffs? Impossible! Unthinkable! The 4th line did not see the ice in the 3rd period. Kennedy is getting murdered on faceoffs, winning just 35% on the year and losing 6 of 7 last night.

I hadn't seen that Rob Ray ESPN commercial before either. LOL.
R_Dudley Posted December 30, 2009 Report Posted December 30, 2009 Pittsburgh announcers stated that they didn't see Miller during the morning skate... can someone confirm or deny this? Yeah I heard that as well. From my understanding, the starting goalie never takes the morning skate for Buffalo. I could be wrong on that, but I believe that is the case, which is why he probably was not seen. Miller was off tonight. It happens to all the goalies. Lalime has been excellent and his mates are clearly excited for him and like him (see post game reaction in the crease) but Miller is the goalie and possibly he needs to play less in the near future, but to suggest they sit him for a week is silly. I have wondered about that(i.e less), Didn't Lindy said earlier in the season that with all games Miller is going to play he(Miller) knows how to pace himself better and gets to decide when he practices or not ? I wonder about that arrangement and how other high minutes played goalies/teams(e.g Brodeur/Luongo) handle that, Is it possible Ryan looking so cold at the start was the fact he didn't play Sunday or do warm up practice before this one. One thing for sure his game was defintely off and Lindy made the right call. Glad to see them pull this game out of their . Just some quick thoughts: -I guess I like Montador. -Stafford needs to play like that all the time. Maybe Lindy should bench everyone else too and fire em up (I'm looking at you Pominville.) -Who needs Derek Roy? -Kennedy, Grier and Vanek is a great line. And subbing in anyone in place of Vanek on that line also seems to work well. Kennedy and Grier just feed off of each other and make the third winger better by association. -DO YOU SEE WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU GO TO THE NET? Please guys, try to remember how well it worked tonight. -Slap shots from the point need to be banned until this team learns how to take them. Overall, happy with the comeback. This team can be good when it wants to. We just need to find a way to keep the fire stoked more steadily. Agreed and I'll add finally seeing the Lindy timely moves of old that got him the Jack Adams and that IMO had been missing for the last season and half. I hope he has his mojo back with making these type of player/game changing moves that shows he has this teams pulse. Yes sir it's a great day in the neighborhood when I can Raz all these Pittsburgh jag off's about losing to my favorite team. The fans here really are very knowledgeable and most are good at calling a spade a spade and giving credit when due. Buffalo played a great one and half periods but truth be told Sabre's fans the Pens still had a hell of a lot of good scoring opportunties right up to the end that they either falied to capitalize on or Lalime made the timely save(e.g. that poke check on Sidney going to the net, multiple just wide missed net shots, ). All and all a very entertaining game and set's up the rematch for February quite nicely. The Pens coach will have them ready for the rematch here and I hope I can snag some tic's for that one ....
Sabre Dance Posted December 30, 2009 Report Posted December 30, 2009 Pens fans thoughts... http://hfboards.com/...ad.php?t=719071 I like the part where several fans think the penalty shot call was bad. Well, the rule says "No defending player, except the goalkeeper, will be permitted to fall on the puck, hold the puck, pick up the puck, or gather the puck into the body or hands when the puck is within the goal crease. For infringement of this rule, play shall immediately be stopped and a penalty shot shall be ordered against the offending team, but no other penalty shall be given." McKee was down already and the puck slid under him. He DID move his arm against his body to prevent the puck from coming loose, so Pens fans may have grabbed on that very tenuous thread. The league has given referees more latitude to call penalty shots in the last several years, so all in all I'd say it was a good call (if I was a neutral observer). I'm not - I loved the call! Pens fans - tough noogies!

SwampD Posted December 30, 2009 Report Posted December 30, 2009 After reading this entire thread today, here's my take. - Miller is the starter. Period. - Miller's rant absolutely woke the team up. Good for him for actually caring enough to get pissed off. It rubbed off on the rest of the team. - Pominville playing a physical game was a joy to watch. Several big hits. - Vanek's play away from the puck continues to impress me and he might actually be more valuable to the team now than as just a scorer. - Roy is the better option over anyone else who would fill in for him. - Stafford on the penalty shot = Ruff - Chasing our tails in our own zone = Ruff - Great game. Not a bellweather or measuring stick game, but fun.
LabattBlue Posted December 30, 2009 Report Posted December 30, 2009 How beautiful was Connolly's pass to Poms for the GWG? He's really stepped up his game, and is even winning more faceoffs. The previous two games he was 8 for 19 and 5 for 12 for a combined 42%(This was after being relegated to not taking face-offs for several games). I don't know if one game where he went 50% is anything to write home about. He also got schooled by Crosby, losing 5 of 6.
JJFIVEOH Posted December 30, 2009 Report Posted December 30, 2009 I did get the impression that the Pens have much more respect for a lot of the Sabres players than we do. Since the Pens lost, I wonder if their fans want the GM and coach fired along with trading half the team.

There are not too many players in the league who haven't gotten schooled on faceoffs by Crosby. I think even Harry Neale mentioned that some assistant coach worked with Crosby getting his stance right and he made the jump to an excellent faceoff man. I was just looking at the stats for faceoffs and Manny Malhotra's name popped up just after Goose - he was one of the free agents available at the end of last season like Dominic Moore who were going to be available for peanuts. Shame we didn't try to get him; he's a scrapper quite like Ellis and would have contributed with a few goals too (7G + 7A = 14pts in 39 GP).
