SDS Posted December 29, 2009 Report Posted December 29, 2009 'The Sabres made the playoff four years, which is four more than the Bills. They emerged from the lockout as the NHL’s bellwether franchise, a potent team ahead of the curve. They won the Presidents’ Trophy in 2006-07, the second consecutive year they reached the Eastern Conference final.' http://www.sabrespace.com/buffalo-sabres/article/all-decade-team-filled-with-special-players/
Eleven Posted December 29, 2009 Report Posted December 29, 2009 For longevity with the Sabres within the decade, I can see Miller over Hasek, but not for any other reason. I love the way Miller is playing right now; I really do. But that was Dominik freaking Hasek! Zhitnik will never make an "all-decade" team of mine. Well, unless the sport was firing pucks into the netting above the glass. Then he'd be a world-beater. I'll take McKee instead, and I don't even think it's a contest. The rest of the selections are ok by me. I'm not sure whether Miro Satan was considered, but he did deserve some consideration (not saying he should have cracked the line-up, though). The cell-phone gesture probably doesn't help.
end the curse Posted December 29, 2009 Report Posted December 29, 2009 Best defenseman: Tyler Myers. Yeah, I know he's only played like 38 games this decade, but he's so much better than any defenseman we've ever had I'm going with him anyway!

Stoner Posted December 29, 2009 Report Posted December 29, 2009 Interesting piece, Bill. But I don't know about saying the Sabres almost moved.

Taro T Posted December 29, 2009 Report Posted December 29, 2009 While I find it a very interesting idea, as this team has had several completely unique incarnations this past decate; and I typically like Mr. Hoppe's work; I do have a few issues w/ Mr. Hoppe's proposal. 1st off, there is no right wing on the team. Even when Briere or Drury would set up shop on a wing it was on the left side. 2nd, Miller might be having the best season of any Sabres' netminder ever? Sorry, it isn't even in the top 3. 3rd, why limit the all decade team to a single line? My very quick 1st pass on the Sabres all decade team would be: Vanek - Briere - Satan Andreychuk - Drury - Pominville Hecht - Peca - Dumont Kotalik - Barnes - Grier McKee - Warrener Zhitnik - Spacek Tallinder - Numminen Hasek - Miller Spares: Myers, Afinogenov, Ray The McKee - Warrener pairing was PRE-McKee hit on Mario resulting in McKee concussion. I would not have a problem w/ Campbell bumping Hank, as both players had some seriously weak seasons in the '00's (to go along w/ a couple of extremely strong ones). If Andy wasn't around long enough, I'd probably slide Roy into that spot. (He played LW quite a bit w/ Drury & Grier.) I'm not happy w/ Satan on the roster but he belongs there. If he's bumped, I'd probably add Audette to the mix. I can't see putting Gilmour ahead of any of the other centers, and his hating playing LW probably would keep him off the roster in that spot as well. Maybe he takes Max's or Ray's seat in the press box. Too bad he had his knee blown out, or Hamel could have ended up on the list at LW; I liked the way his game had been coming on.
nucci Posted December 29, 2009 Report Posted December 29, 2009 Interesting piece, Bill. But I don't know about saying the Sabres almost moved. Bettman had said he received offers from some who would move the Sabres if they purchased them. Bettman said he would hold out for a local owner. I think Buffalo losing the Sabres was a strong possibility back then.
inkman Posted December 29, 2009 Report Posted December 29, 2009 I loathe the fact that Umberger is mentioned in the Campbell bio. One hit makes a career? Come on!
end the curse Posted December 29, 2009 Report Posted December 29, 2009 My all-decade starting lineup: Vanek-Briere-Pominville Myers-Campbell
BillHoppe Posted December 29, 2009 Report Posted December 29, 2009 I loathe the fact that Umberger is mentioned in the Campbell bio. One hit makes a career? Come on! I didn't write it made his career. I said it brought him to the forefront of the hockey world for the first time.
SwampD Posted December 29, 2009 Report Posted December 29, 2009 I loathe the fact that Umberger is mentioned in the Campbell bio. One hit makes a career? Come on! That play did make his career, though. He got the contract that he did because other teams then thought he was a physical defenseman. And say what you want, but that hit was awesome and completely changed that series. I didn't write it made his career. I said it brought him to the forefront of the hockey world for the first time. Yes it did. Good piece.
Eleven Posted December 30, 2009 Report Posted December 30, 2009 I didn't write it made his career. I said it brought him to the forefront of the hockey world for the first time. And it did, as Swamp pointed out.
