SDS Posted December 24, 2009 Report Posted December 24, 2009 At least two people referenced this in the GDT. This is a perfect example of how people watching the same team see radically different things. I cringe when I see him on the ice. He tries so hard, but I'm always holding my breath with the way he handles the puck. It seems to me he is a disaster waiting to happen at any moment, even if a disaster doesn't occur. He instills zero faith in me and I have no idea what people see in him on the ice that would inspire any man crush.
Ted's Hot Dogs Posted December 24, 2009 Report Posted December 24, 2009 at least he is more reliable than Lydman
SDS Posted December 24, 2009 Author Report Posted December 24, 2009 at least he is more reliable than Lydman Lydman may make dumb plays, but at least he looks confident doing it. Even Montador's good moments - I always feel he's a gnat's ass away from royally screwing up.
Ted's Hot Dogs Posted December 24, 2009 Report Posted December 24, 2009 Lydman's inability to clear the puck on powerplays, horendous turnovers in our own zone have made him the worst player on the sabres... Montador is a clone of spachek... Great shot but slow as all hell
inkman Posted December 24, 2009 Report Posted December 24, 2009 Methinks the big easy is jading your opinions somewhat.
LabattBlue Posted December 24, 2009 Report Posted December 24, 2009 I don't know if I would go so far as "man crush", but Montador to me has been a pleasant surprise. Contrary to what is being said in this thread, I don't think he is slow at all and he seems to move the puck pretty well out of his own zone. He does like to make that tight turn out from behind the net which can be a little hairy at times, but overall, pretty good value for what they are paying him.
wjag Posted December 24, 2009 Report Posted December 24, 2009 I must be watching the game with blinders on.. I don't have a problem with anyone on the defense this year. An occassional lapse here or there, but game in, game out, the defense hasn't been the problem.

An occassional lapse here or there, but game in, game out, the defense hasn't been the problem. No one is claiming that in this thread. I was pointing out that when I watch a game - SM always looks like he is teetering on disaster when the puck is within 5 feet of him.

SwampD Posted December 24, 2009 Report Posted December 24, 2009 Lydman may make dumb plays, but at least he looks confident doing it. Even Montador's good moments - I always feel he's a gnat's ass away from royally screwing up. I don't really know what to make of this statement. I'd rather have someone look ugly while making the right play over someone looking pretty while screwing up,.. every time. I personally don't think Montador looks ugly (well, his hockey anyway) while doing what he does. And of all the defensemen, he seems to be able to keep the puck in the offensive zone a lot more.
shack & duff Posted December 24, 2009 Report Posted December 24, 2009 I think it's WNY Syndrome: if he's not from here he must be good. Once he's been here for the better part of a season or so he'll be judged by the same standards as the other team members. I do agree, however, that the issues this year are with the first two lines and not behind the blue line.

I agree with the first two lines being the major problem with this team, perhaps with the return of a healthy Vanek they can play better and more exciting creative hockey.....
nfreeman Posted December 26, 2009 Report Posted December 26, 2009 I think Montador has been a very solid addition. He's had a much better first year with the Sabres than Spacek did. Frankly, the ability to scoop up a guy like him for $1.55MM x 2 years makes me much more willing to let go of Tallinder and/or Lydman after this season if either of them is looking for a contract like Spacek got from Montreal (which is quite possible, BTW).
SabresFan526 Posted December 26, 2009 Report Posted December 26, 2009 I haven't had much of a problem with Montador. Frankly, he's been much better than I thought he would be. My expectations were incredibly low. There are really two guys who really make me cringe when they have the puck on the blueline and those are Lydman and Sekera. Lydman cannot clear the zone ever. Sekera flubs the puck so much and turns it over all the time. Sekera has been much better recently, but I have limited confidence when he has the puck, but hopefully that changes. I think Montador has been so much better than I ever thought offensively. He gets shots through on net, makes smart pinches, can join the rush, is very good holding the puck in the zone, and he's decent enough defensively and can play physical. He's been a tremendous surprise for me. He's a lousy fighter though. I will say that. Having seen him play in other places, he's been quite mediocre and unspectacular, but when you watch him on a daily basis, he does a lot of good things. I've been very pleasantly surprised by Steve Montador and his presence will ease the loss of Lydman and likely Tallinder as well.
Skibum Posted December 28, 2009 Report Posted December 28, 2009 Rivet is the one who makes me cringe the most. He has no finesse with the puck whatsoever. Looks like he's just clubbing away, hoping to knock it in the right general direction. Montador has been awesome. I think he makes great outlet passes - he actually tries to hit guys in stride - and he's much more confident with the puck than some of the other D men. His defense is solid, too.

Sounds maybe hippie, but I`m happy that team management doesn`t rush to get rid of everyone who are "less great" sometimes. I seriously think it would damage the team harmony and balance in the long run, destroy the relaxed atmosphere that might be the one that takes far in playoffs. After all, it has been great so far.

Good call and welcome. As long as the Sabres are in good playoff position, I don't see them trading any of their defensemen. At this point, they're all playing pretty well, and the playoffs are such a physical grind that it's hard to see the top 6 staying healthy. I will note that Rivet played under 14 minutes last night. I did really like him stepping in on Kaleta's behalf though.
wjag Posted December 29, 2009 Report Posted December 29, 2009 Washington Capitals trade their Captain to the Blue Jackets.. Clark and Jurcina for Chimera.. Interesting...

This...He's controls the puck relatively well coming out of the zone and has a very goos outlet pass. Good value for the contract.
Eleven Posted December 29, 2009 Report Posted December 29, 2009 Washington Capitals trade their Captain to the Blue Jackets.. Clark and Jurcina for Chimera.. Interesting... Interesting indeed. I'm wondering whether the BJs "won" this deal. If Washington still were in the Patrick division, I could see the need for a bruiser, but I'm not quite getting this one unless another move is in the works.
carpandean Posted December 29, 2009 Report Posted December 29, 2009 One of the best, trying to get better. Salary dump, plain and simple ... so they can get better at the deadline. The guys on WGR mentioned something about the deal originally including some big Capitals prospect for, I believe, Filatov. However, that part fell through.

Perfect example of someone just trying too hard to go against the grain and see something that isn't there... the dude is hardly ever noticeable and that is a good thing for defensemen...
