sabres121879 Posted December 23, 2009 Report Posted December 23, 2009 Has Vanek been hurt since early this season? I think it would explain why his stats are down so much this year so far. It just seemed like for most of the year he hasn't been skating well at all and his presence in front of the net on the power play hasn't been what it was in recent years. If he has been hurt all along, I admire his willingness to play through it but I'm glad that Ruff has decided to keep him out until he is healed. Just a thought.

Except for the few games before he came of the lineup, nothing was said about him being injured. Therefore, I chalk it up to a very slow start. Nothing more, nothing less.

Actually, like every human being that suffers a concussion you count your blessings if you're able to balance and in the NHL skate again. Recall the Red Sox phenom Matt Clement (the Abe Lincoln looking dude) who had a pitch he threw come right back and clock him in the head. He was never the same again - he wasn't so lucky! TV is still recovering from his fractured jaw/concussion, Connolly is too & Patrick Kaleta as well. Don't get me wrong these guys are athletes and in top physical conditioning else they would NOT be hockey functional post trauma. Self preservation - an autonomous response - means they are less choleric and more even keeled and that is a good thing. The Sabres like every other org is trying to build a long term success rather than a flash in the pan. Since the NHL has been helter skelter post CB agreement regarding cheap shots and selectively enforcing discipline, pure hockey virtue like recent games against Chicago, Washington, Pittsburgh & Toronto to name a few should be the norm - but, unfortunately, is still a work in progress!

PA actually had this link in his Thomas's Blog thread. http://www.thomasvanek.at/index.php?id=31&L=1&tx_ttnews%5Btt_news%5D=172&tx_ttnews%5BbackPid%5D=2&cHash=8790f73278 I never heard any specific details about what he infers about the secret injury in the 11/17 dated post. Not sure what that secret injury was but it sure sounds to me like he has been battling some things over the last couple months at least. Then there's sabresrepublics post which talks about coming back from a serious injury like the concussion/broken jaw from last year and I fully agree with WJAG post.
spndnchz Posted December 23, 2009 Report Posted December 23, 2009 From GR550: Vanek said, "It sucks, I've taken many pucks and beatings in front of the net which I don't mind, I like being there and I think it's a good place to be and it's just a fluke thing that it must have hit me the right way. I understand where Lindy is coming from and it makes sense that if I can't go the way he wants me to and the way I want to, it's tough, but obviously I still want to be out there and do my thing, but I know it's better for the team to give someone else who's healthy a shot and hopefully I'll get better soon." IMO, an injury like that, prolonged or not being able to heal before the next game (this year being more games and less rest time) would affect his skating more than his shooting. Vanek towards the end of last year was averaging 4-5 shots per game. He's averaging 1.8 shots over the last 5 games he played, 2.2 over the last ten. We he has 3 or more shots on goal he has scored in 6 of those 11 games. We he's had 2 or less he's scored in 3 of 15 games. In regards to skating and the backcheck, I'd expect that to affect his +/- but he's a +4 in his last ten games.

It's going to affect (not effect!) his skating, his shooting, everything. Duds, I don't think his 11/17 post "secret" is referring to injury.
LabattBlue Posted December 23, 2009 Report Posted December 23, 2009 TV is still recovering from his fractured jaw/concussion... So everytime Vaneks sucks between now and when he retires, we just chalk it up to this?? Self preservation - an autonomous response - means they are less choleric and more even keeled and that is a good thing. I feel like I am back in college trying to figure out exactly what you are saying...for the second time today!
shrader Posted December 23, 2009 Report Posted December 23, 2009 Duds, I don't think his 11/17 post "secret" is referring to injury. That's right around the time that my sister in law found out that she's pregnant. I wonder if I should share this little detail with my brother.

I feel like I am back in college trying to figure out exactly what you are saying...for the second time today! Perhaps you had too many Blues? Just kidding!!! Analogy: Baby starts to crawl then starts to walk & starts to get rambunctious - falls - & then is gun shy about what happened! Real life: TV wants to be more judicious of his energy expenditure (a good thing as long as he is expending constructively for the good of the team) Makes a great wraparound goal against Toronto but tweaks an unsuspecting abdomen - body says whoa boy! - time to settle down - got to recover. Something like that!

First the injury, then… But, no, that’s still a secret. Okay now that I re-read that I can kinda see that but not real clearly. Still then what injury was he referring too and exactly what, when and how long did it effect his play? I did see him refer earlier in the posting to the "May hit/injury" but I again do not recall a lot of information having been made available on that one either.

Stoner Posted December 26, 2009 Report Posted December 26, 2009 Tom's blog is updated. He promises a "major announcement" on January 1, relating to the "surprise" he's been teasing on his site.

Stoner Posted December 26, 2009 Report Posted December 26, 2009 Derek Roy went to Jared? I never would have dreamt I would be reading those five words today, in that order anyway.
Eleven Posted December 26, 2009 Report Posted December 26, 2009 I never would have dreamt I would be reading those five words today, in that order anyway. You got lucky. I had to read about someone easing himself into Larry David.

Vanek Nation Posted December 26, 2009 Report Posted December 26, 2009 Watch the pre-game video on sabres.com. Vanek says its the best he has felt in weeks. Weeks? I have a feeling hes been injured for longer than this stomach thing has been around for. I have a feeling that now with a (hopefully) healthy Vanek we will a return to his form from last year.
