It Is Painfully Obvious

If this team really wants to shake up the roster, the only viable trade option is Roy.

He has the contract and point production that any team in the league desires.

Roy for Sharp straight up. It wouldn't free up Chicago's cap woes, but I bet they'd take Roy and dump someone else on their roster.

Looking at some numbers it appears the loss of Grier is much worse than losing Goose in the win column.

Winning percentage with Grier playing : 67% 14 of 21

Winning percentage with Grier NOT playing : 33% 2 of 6

Win percentage with Goose in: 60% 12 of 20

Win percentage with Goose OUT: 57% 4 of 7

what about when goose and grier are both out?? vs both in

edit..... sorry didnt read all the way ahead.

I thought it was seventh... Yep. Lowest goals against in the league, 3rd lowest goals for of playoff teams, tied with Boston for 6th in points in the east but lost the tiebreaker.

I stand corrected, you are right.

Would love Patrick Sharp here. More so than picking Ray Whitney up out of Carolina.

Sharp would fix our problem at center.

And yes, Chicago would deal him. They need to deal him before the deadline; there's simply no room to accommodate him under the cap. Not sure what Chicago would want in return. They'd want picks and prospects I'd assume. They cant eat any more salary. Their goalie depth is quite weak; perhaps Enroth, another prospect and a pick could land Sharp?

and ours?

I'm not so sure how weak the Hawks' goalie depth is. They lack a true #1 right now but depth wise, they're loaded. Antti Niemi is their backup, played his first year in N.A. last year in AHL after being signed from Europe, and played great... and as a rookie in Chicago this year, he's holding his own. He's as good or better then Jonas Hiller in Anahiem, it just takes time. Corey Crawford has been their "future" but who knows, he's 24 now and they also have Dan Cloutier in the AHL. If they need a backup, they will call Cloutier up as he has experience.

I'd offer them a similar deal to what Toronto dealt to Boston for Kessel. Two firsts and a second, although, i'd make the 2nd in 2011 instead of next years draft.

I know you said something 'similar' but..

Kessel > Sharp

I'm going to continue beating the trade Pominville horse until it's dead. This guy needs to go.

As will i. Their paying this guy to score 30 goals, add 40 assists and play well in his own end. He's had about 15 goals in the last 75 games (Might be over estimating there). Its sickening.

While i agree, but i just don't think Sabres have any leverage. Get a deal done to fix the PP and get a guy who can be a threat each time he hits the ice. Even if that means over paying.

18G, 41A in his last 75GP.

Pominville is one of these guys who somehow puts up better numbers than you would guess, but never seems to make an impact when it matters. Despite being a real waste last year, I kept him around on my fantasy teams just because for some reason his numbers were never that bad. But I'm not sure what he really contributed in real life, because I never noticed it.

I guess the same could be said for guys like Stafford and Roy, and sometimes Vanek.

I was close. As d4rksabre just posted, Pommer puts up average numbers, but never really makes much of a difference out there. And for the money he makes, and is going to make, you expect more out of him. If i were a GM and i signed him to that deal, only to watch him miss the net more that he hits it, i would be infuriated.

I often watch him play and envision other players that make 4.5 (and 5.5). Thats ultimatly the problem with this team. Too much money being wasted on too many players who bring few results.

and ours?

We have Ryan Miller

Chicago no true number one goalie right now.

Our depth isn't anything to brag about in the goalie position, but we have a few years to develop that with Miller between the pipes.

Face it: We're stuck with these guys and Jochen Hecht to boot. No, they can't score much but they do seem to keep the puck moving in the right direction a majority of the time, and team defence is the best we've seen in many years. Miller is on a serious Vezina campaign. There is plenty to be happy about in Sabreland.

Alex Ovechkin isn't walking through that door any time soon. You will all feel better if you take the Buddhist route and just let it go. Ommmmmmmmm.

Ovechkin will be in Buffalo sometime tomorrow. E5. You heard it here first.

Oh indeed he is sir, and i'm seeing him live, in person, on the ice, with a new sense of anger. The fact that i'm seeing Alexander Ovechkin alone, makes me more excited than the fact i'm going to see the Sabres . I was quite nervous that he was going to miss the game due to injury, and when i found out he was playing yesterday, i was estatic. Hopefully he scores at least 4 goals. :worthy: But realistically, i want to see one goal out of him. Its going to be utterly annoying to hear the fans boo him, but its Buffalo.

Pittsburgh has a couple.

Washington has a couple.

The Flyers have a couple in Richards and Carter.

The Rangers have Gaborick.

Atlanta has Kolvachuk.

Tampa has Vinny and St.Louis - even though both appear to be on the down side.

Ottawa has Spezza and Alfredsson.

That's seven teams in the East alone that have game changing type players.

Contract running out....

Tick Tick Tick....

Let's get a game-changer and utilize him on a decent team with good goaltending and coaching.

Remeber, this is Lindy and Darcy's last chance.

Playoffs are a must and to advance in future years will require some bodies being moved from the top two lines.

Hey Atlanta, pick two or three and let's make this deal.

No untouchables outside of Miller and Meyers (maybe Vanek...maybe not)

The Thrashers may be in a "non traditional" hockey market but they still will not take our garbage for their gold.

Let's not forget the Thrasher's are more potent offensively than the Sabres and are every bit, if not more, a playoff contender as the Sabres are. Why would they throw away a chance at the playoffs. Maybe the Thrashers should call Buffalo and ask "since you are wasting Miller any chance you would want to trade him to a team that can give him some offensive support?"

I hate that I agree with you. ;)

Vanek, Roy, Butler? Not going to happen, but I don't think the deal is impossible.

Right about now, I'm not sure if I hate the idea of Kennedy being in the top 6. He's got way more jam than any of the others.

I agree on Kennedy.

As for Kovalchuk, I'd make the trade you propose, but only if Kovalchuk agrees to an extension as part of the deal. I'd also rather trade Pommer than Roy, but that is a pure fantasy right now.

Stepping back, as to the question of whether the Sabres have any "game changers," I think Miller is the only one who can be this consistently. Roy, Vanek and Connolly are too streaky and Pommer just doesn't have enough game. I also think, though, that it's a bit unrealistic to expect Roy and TC to be impact players at the same level as the NHL's true superstars. Their career numbers don't support that type of expectation, and neither do their salaries.

Vanek, OTOH, does have both the career numbers and the salary to justify those expectations. He's supposed to be a first-tier sniper -- turning into another Heatley -- and instead he's mailing it in to the tune of a 26-32-58 season. He's more like another Miro. I know there are those who blame Lindy for not getting more out of Vanek, but I think it is first and foremost Vanek's failure. Even the babyish Heatley at the peak of his unhappiness in Ottawa put up 41-41-82 and 39-33-72.

The other huge disappointment is Pommer. I've defended Darcy as much as anyone has, and I think just about every GM has made a big contract blunder (or several), but Pommer's contract is the worst move Darcy's ever made. $5.3MM per year for the next 5 years for a guy who doesn't look like he's EVER going to exceed 22-35-57 or so. Take that $5.3MM, add Hecht's $3.3MM, and now you've got enough cash for Kovalchuk or a real game-changer. But instead we're married to those 2 mediocrities.

Bottom line though is that if Vanek gets his act together and starts scoring at a 45-goal pace, the Sabres will look much better.
