repster Posted November 22, 2009 Report Posted November 22, 2009 It's now looking like 08-09 all over again. Can we please get a back-up goalie? Don't have much to say. All my comments made last year still apply. Last year they were 9-3-3 and then promptly lost 5 in a row. This year 12-4-1 and they've lost 3 in a row, with road games against Washington and Philly to come...the pressure is on. I wonder if the Sabres would ever consider changing their home game nights to Saturday to avoid these situations that happen year after year. Either that or hire a new strength and conditioning coach that can get these guys in better shape and show more hustle for 60 minutes. Too often they seem slower than the team they're playing.
Derrico Posted November 22, 2009 Report Posted November 22, 2009 Lindy's gotta go...I mean game notes - - Why is Pominville still at the point on the PP. He has no shot and he can't keep the puck in the zone. - Our wingers on D are too deep. Open ice isn't going to score on us, the guy at the point is. - Why do you need to be down 4 goals before you start skating against a hated division rival. - Can we decline penalties like in the NFL. Our PP is useless. Oh tell me your joking! Lindy's gotta go???? Really???? Give me a break Mr. Over Reactor.....I think that Pommers actually has a better shot than I had originally thought. He had a beauty tonight and I noticed a great shot in one of the shootout games to win it. Furthermore, we've scored a PP goal in like 5 of the last 6 games or something like that. They stunk again tonight but I'm not sure it was the PP that let them down, their 5 on 5 play leaves alot to be desired.....
... Posted November 22, 2009 Report Posted November 22, 2009 their 5 on 5 play leaves alot to be desired..... Yes it does. Who's responsible for that?
notwoz Posted November 22, 2009 Report Posted November 22, 2009 Lindy's gotta go...I mean game notes - Actually I place more blame on Darcy. She needs to get over her girlie-man fixation. The Sabres need real hockey players, not figure skaters like Connolly. The Sabres need guys who, in the the words of Robie, don't mind getting their noses bloodied. Give Lindy a team full of hard-nosed, hard-working players and he'll do all right. And if he can't, bring back Ted Nolan, who could squeeze maximum effort out of minimal talent. And I don't care if he screwed Hasek's wife. If any coach can bring a Stanley Cup to Buffalo, they can screw anyone they want as far as I'm concerned.
SabresFan526 Posted November 22, 2009 Report Posted November 22, 2009 I'm sure no one on here is going to say it, but wow this team misses Mike Grier. Seriously. Look how mediocre they look without him in the lineup. Yeah, they got a few wins last week without him, but it's in the really tough games against division rivals that when he's not there, things become a mess. It seems silly to say that a guy with not so much talent but lots of heart be such a difference maker. But, what you don't notice with him is all the little things he does. For example, his hard work along the boards creates chances in the offensive zone that we haven't been seeing. He never gets outworked and rarely loses puck battles. What happens, and I've noticed this is that the team as a whole works a lot harder when Grier is in the lineup than when he is not in the lineup. He's also excellent in the defensive zone and you can always play him on the PK, and tonight he would have lined up against Spezza and Alfredsson had he been there. Seriously, this team needs Grier to come back, and soon. One other thing I noticed the last couple of nights is that Lindy has been putting Vanek on the right wing instead of his normal left wing position. I think the fact that Stafford is out is causing this problem, so the Sabres need to get Stafford back soon or call someone up from Portland who can play right wing because Vanek looks off playing on the right wing in my opinion. His game just seems off, but that could be more a function of his game being off this year than him playing right wing, but he seems off on the right side. As for the game itself, I won't pin this on Lalime. The team in front of him just seems to play lousy when he's in net. They had a really good first period, but then they totally let it go in the second and the first half of the third. And, some of the goals were just weird deflections that he had no chance on. Poor guy, he's got no luck. Having said that, the book is clearly out on him and I think every team in the NHL knows you can beat Lalime high to the glove side. Man, he's got one of the slowest and worst glove hands I've seen. I hope the Sabres make a trade for a legitimate backup goalie that can win games on a more consistent basis. Well, this was a four point game that the Sabres lost tonight and they are on a three game losing streak with only 1 point to speak of this week. Not a good week. Hopefully, the Sabres can get Grier and Stafford healthy for next week and the team can look back to normal.
... Posted November 22, 2009 Report Posted November 22, 2009 I'm sure no one on here is going to say it, but wow...lots of words...back to normal. If the team depends on one person to win then the team is in trouble.
SabresFan526 Posted November 22, 2009 Report Posted November 22, 2009 If the team depends on one person to win then the team is in trouble. The team depends on Miller to win games. But they are a much better team, and a much harder working team with Grier in the lineup than without. His injury hurts this team more than anyone realizes.
SwampD Posted November 22, 2009 Report Posted November 22, 2009 If the team depends on one person to win then the team is in trouble. He's right, though.
Stoner Posted November 22, 2009 Report Posted November 22, 2009 I love when some media person wants to tell the goalie he never saw the puck on a goal, and the goalie says, "Yeah, I did." Credit to Patrick there.
SwampD Posted November 22, 2009 Report Posted November 22, 2009 Oh tell me your joking! Lindy's gotta go???? Really???? Maybe if you would have told me that 9 years ago it may have been true, but Lindy's gotta go. What is he going to show me this season that I haven't already seen.
notwoz Posted November 22, 2009 Report Posted November 22, 2009 I'm not joking, and I'm certainly not over-reacting. Maybe if you would have told me that 9 years ago it may have been true, but Lindy's gotta go. What is he going to show me this season that I haven't already seen. Certainly something has to give. i'm not sure it's Lindy, though. I think Darcy has a fixation on soft players, and not real hockey players. That's the real problem. If Lindy had a roster filled with players who are hard-nosed and willing to get their noses bloodied, then the Sabres have a much greater chance of proceeding deep into the playoffs. But until Darcy starts signing players who are hockey players, and not figure skaters, we're stuck with more of the same.
notwoz Posted November 22, 2009 Report Posted November 22, 2009 But as Monty Python sings, in the Life of Brian, "Always look on the bright side of life."

Seriously, this team needs Grier to come back, and soon. Agree 100%. A few other notes: 1. I've resisted until now, but I'm officially on the "Lalime must go" bandwagon. They didn't play great in front of him, or give him any kind of scoring support, but still. He doesn't look like an NHL goalie. At this point it's just hard to see them ever getting a win with him there. This situation doesn't seem like it can be saved. 2. Garbage-time goal notwithstanding, I think Pominville played the worst game tonight that any Sabre has played this year. Just like last year, he is totally shriveling up when the team needs him. He gets sprung by a great pass on a shorthanded breakaway all alone, dekes the goalie and shoots it wide. Ridiculous. His contract is looking like the worst decision DR has ever made. 3. They addressed a number of needs in the offseason, but they didn't upgrade backup goalie, and they didn't get a top-6 forward. Their top 6 looks so feeble right now (other than Vanek, who I thought looked pretty good again tonight). Did TC, Pommer, MacArthur or Roy make a single good play before garbage time tonight? One? 4. I would be happy to see Pommer and Mac healthy-scratched next game in favor of Ennis and Mancari. 5. WTF happened to the team that was top-5 in scoring 2 years in a row?
deluca67 Posted November 22, 2009 Report Posted November 22, 2009 I'm not joking, and I'm certainly not over-reacting. Maybe if you would have told me that 9 years ago it may have been true, but Lindy's gotta go. What is he going to show me this season that I haven't already seen. I came to a realization that I agree that Lindy has to go 100%. It came this week. I don't think the Sabres are that far different from the Bills except for Ryan Miller. They ae both teams lacking talent where I can't say many players are being coached beyond their talent. I can't sit here and say Jauron needs to go despite a lacking roster and say Ruff should stay because he has a lacking roster. I try not to be a hypocrite, when it came to coaches I was. I'm shocked no one called me out on it. I think there are players on this roster that can benefit from a different coach. At some point coaching needs to be more about developing players than developing a system.
rickshaw Posted November 22, 2009 Report Posted November 22, 2009 Sure was shocked to find out we lost to Ottawa of all teams. Insert blatant sarcasm here.

Guest Posted November 22, 2009 Report Posted November 22, 2009 Well I haven't posted yet this year, and mainly because I was waiting for the real Buffalo Sabres to show up. And as usual, right on cue......here they are. Welcome to another season of mediocrity people. :death:
baleine Posted November 22, 2009 Report Posted November 22, 2009 It's not Lindy! The players are to blame. It's not Lalime...Miller wouldn't have prevented the spanking tonight by Ottawa. Do you really think Marty would have saved the day tonight? Our premadonnas, Vanek, Roy and Pomenville are just that. Vanek gets his usual garbage goal and the press sings his praise but where is his work ethic? He's great at tapping the puck in on redirections in front of the net, but carry the puck in across the blueline..he's like the "slug" of a logo we have. I'm at every game and I'm tired of watching him. Here's a good one..Vanek: 13 points, 7 goals. Roy: 16pts, 4 goals...Connolly: 17pts, 4 goals. MAX AFINOGENOV: 20pts, 9 goals. Great move Buffalo! Darcy should be looking for a scorer now..but he will wait until the trade deadline and give you a token move like Heinz or last years Moore. For God's sake Buffalo it's same old same old...speaking of which how is Golisano...anybody seen him at a game?????? If the owner has no passion for the game how do you expect the players will?
billsrcursed Posted November 22, 2009 Report Posted November 22, 2009 Season's over, fire sale this mofo right now, blow it up. On a serious note, I'd strip Rivet of that pretty "C" he has on his chest. Just to mix things up, I'd throw it on someone's chest nobody is expecting, like Butler or Kaleta. Let the guys know that hard work is expected for 60 minutes, not the first and last 10 minutes. Meh... wouldn't work, these guys are too cozy. I miss my pony.
Eleven Posted November 22, 2009 Report Posted November 22, 2009 Has anyone heard or read the reason why Sekera played wing last night?
Mbossy Posted November 22, 2009 Report Posted November 22, 2009 Has anyone heard or read the reason why Sekera played wing last night? Would they have needed to send Mair down to bring up Ennis? How many guys can be here? pressbox? Or, they usually play three lines most of the third period. So with Sekera playing 7-8 shifts then go to defense.
carpandean Posted November 22, 2009 Report Posted November 22, 2009 Would they have needed to send Mair down to bring up Ennis? How many guys can be here? pressbox? With Grier on IR, the healthy scratches last night were Paetsch and Stafford. They are allowed three, so Ennis (or any other call-up) should have been able to come up with sending anyone down.

At some point coaching needs to be more about developing players than developing a system. There are several great Canadian hockey minds out there and the guy was selected as an associate coach for the olympic team. What an honour. He's brought sabres teams from different era's deep into the playoffs. Ya, if we didn't have Miller we'd be screwed. If we didn't have Hasek in 99 then we wouldn't even be discussing the Hull goal..... A week ago this team was unbelievable and everyone was on board with how different the team is. Three losses in a row and look at us on here.....
Foligno's Nose Posted November 22, 2009 Report Posted November 22, 2009 $5.3MM for him for the next 5 years is looking like a really awful contract. There have been much worse examples of 'awful' contracts. $ 5.3 M is heavy, but the guy is relatively consistent. He is one of the big boys offensively thoough and needs to show up when the team needs an offensive lift. (Like on that breakaway last night - He had him beat!!! - Finish!!!)
