VS. Had An Interesting Discussion On Concussions

Mike Keenan was on talking about rule changes being considered. The GM's might do away with the trapazoid to allow goalies to play the puck more so the defenseman are not getting crushed behind the net. They may also allow some more interference on forechecking forwards to slow them down. Not stick stuff, just some interference to give the d-man a little more time. They also said they might suspend players for blind side hits, like the one Richards did.

I'd consider doing away with the open ice hits. Like Campbell's hit on Umburger. Is it really necessary to hit someone so hard their brain gets scrambled?

I think the easiest way to cut down on concussions would be to outlaw shots to the head - with a zero-tolerance policy - and to police the equipment players wear, particularly the hard-shelled shoulder and elbow pads.

And, at the risk of getting PA all riled up and stirring another Neil-Drury debate, why don't they also start fining and/or suspending players for not having their helmets secure and snug?

There seems to be a fine line between what constitutes a "good" (if there is one) headshot vs a bad one. Gelncross hit on Drury was an awful lot like the one he got from Neil, but Neil got nothing. You could say Neil was more of a hit, including the head. While Gelncross was more a 'clip' with the shoulder.

I'd agree we need to get clarification on the rule itself, no memo's, a real ruling. I prefer a hard hitting game. Guys should assume that everyone on the other team wants to plaster them all the time, but headhunting discredits the game.

So in other words, change absolutely nothing. They already let the d-men slow down the forwards. They never really cut back on that at all.

You do not have to get hit in the head to get a concussion. I would not be surprised at all if the vast majority of concussions were not caused by someone getting hit in the body and their heads snapping back. So helmets, head shots and that stuff wouldn't fix this, imo

Great, like there's not enough interference now.

Well, they did.... For about 20 games in 2005-2006.

Ever since then, the interference call has been absent from the game.

They really didn't though. The players thought they were, so they didn't grab and slow down the forecheckers. Once they realized that they weren't going to make the calls, that play quickly returned to the game.

I don't agree at all. They do let the dmen or backchecking forwards stay in their lanes in front of the forwards as they enter the zone, and perhaps take a half-step in either direction to stay in the way, but there is no more grabbing and hooking to slow them down, which was very much the case pre-lockout.

give an automatic 10 game suspension for a hit to the head regardless of intent. You would see them quickly go away after a few players got hit with those...

Ryan said this better than I ever could. This is exactly how I feel.

Miller is tired of head shots

http://www.buffalonews.com/buffalosabres/story/859746.html

It's not only within the rules, it's within a culture that continues to worsen. Somewhere along the line, players began losing respect for each other — Miller said it was likely around the launch of the "Don Cherry's Rock'em Sock'em Hockey" videos the goalie and his cohorts watched.

"That created this environment where we're looking for something huge," Miller said. "There was a lot more respect at one time. I think there's some guys out there that just do not respect the game or respect other players.

"Go play hard, knock the guy off the puck. If you can put him on his butt, put him on his butt. I'm talking about when a guy is vulnerable, when a guy's head is there, there's no respect.

"That's a predatory hit [by Richards]. He's coming through the middle. He knows if this guy doesn't pay attention, I'm clocking him. It's a respect thing. The guy made a play, the puck's not there.

"Hitting was always to separate the man from the puck. Now it's turned into something different." ....

"GMs, the NHL are afraid of taking hitting out of hockey, but it's not ever going to take the hitting out of hockey," Miller said. "It's going to take the stupid hits out of hockey."

I'll keep on saying it, someone has to die before anything gets fixed. God it bugs me beyond belief.
