Ted's Hot Dogs Posted November 10, 2009 Report Posted November 10, 2009 For the first time, Olympic games will be played on a narrower, NHL-sized ice rink, measuring 61x26 metres (200x85 feet), instead of the international size of 61x30 metres (200x98.5 feet). This change is expected to save $10 million (CAD) in construction costs and allow more spectators to attend games.[1] Wikipedia was the source.. It goes on saying that it will save 10 million dollars.. Can you Imagine no-touch iceing with small rinks.. I love the Big rink's.. I am very angry to say the least.ughhhh

Im not sure what size they use in the KHL or any of those other Elite Leagues in Europe, but do you think this may for better or worse give a bit of an advantage to the North American teams?

I did check and confirm that the hockey games will be played at the Canucks arena - makes sense - which pretty much confirms that the Olympic officials simply agreed to let them COMPLETELY CHANGE THE GAME by using an NHL sized ice surface.
Eleven Posted November 10, 2009 Report Posted November 10, 2009 Is the Saddledome's ice surface now smaller than it was in 1988?
Buffer Posted November 10, 2009 Report Posted November 10, 2009 I can't really get too excited about the rink size. As long as the NHL participates the top teams will be made 90% of NHL players, so there is hardly any advantage to anyone.

mphs mike Posted November 10, 2009 Report Posted November 10, 2009 Is the Saddledome's ice surface now smaller than it was in 1988? Apparently the answer is yes - at least according to Wiki.
darksabre Posted November 10, 2009 Report Posted November 10, 2009 Apparently the answer is yes - at least according to Wiki. Nothing in there says the ice surface was made smaller...
Foligno's Nose Posted November 12, 2009 Report Posted November 12, 2009 This was another thing Bettman and company dropped the ball on. Fiften or so years ago, in the procees of building new arenas in every major market - no foresight was taken to adopt international/ Olympic sized ice. I beleive it would be a benefit to the game. Oh yeah...Bettman is a short, pompous douchebag.
SwampD Posted November 12, 2009 Report Posted November 12, 2009 You guys really care that much? Yes. The Olympic game is just fun.

You go olympic, you lose seats and money. The states and owners who funded them were never going to let that happen.

I am sure they would price the seats accordingly to more than make up for the difference in attendance. And what the hell are a few less seats to fiull in an eighty+ game NHL season...in most markets.

And what the hell are a few less seats to fiull in an eighty+ game NHL season...in most markets. And less seats for other events too. It adds up quickly. Remember, we're talking about many of the stingiest people in the country. They want to get every last dollar they can. I also wonder how much extra it would cost to maintain an olypic surface. A larger surface means a larger and stronger cooling system. There's more money. I think the biggest problem though is that the majority of their feeder leagues are playing on the standard ice surface. They need to play to what the majority is comfortable with. Sure, those places could eventually convert too, but I can't even imagine what it would take to make that happen.
