inkman Posted October 26, 2009 Report Posted October 26, 2009 Linky Sabres in at number three. I don't put much credence in these rankings but the bottom of the rankings looks a who's who on the Sabres schedule. Let's hope this team isn't a house of cards built from piling wins up on the bottom feeders.
shrader Posted October 26, 2009 Report Posted October 26, 2009 If you want reason to ignore these rankings, here it is: The Coyotes get docked in my rankings for poor home attendance. Veteran defenseman Ed Jovanovski looking terrific with seven points (3-4) and a plus-2 rating through nine games. Home attendance is the measure of a team now? Well ok, you can ignore them since they're power rankings, but my god, what a horrible thought there.

That's like saying "I was going to rate them 3rd, but they have a slug on their jersey".

Calvin Posted October 26, 2009 Report Posted October 26, 2009 # 1 on TSN http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=296190 #3 on ESPN, #1 on TSN while it doesn't mean much to us anyways, what it does mean is that people are paying attention.. people like coaches and backroom staff who are studying film and gameplanning around what we do well. needless to say, it's harder to do better when everyone's eyes are on you..
SteamRoller72 Posted October 26, 2009 Report Posted October 26, 2009 I take these rankings with a grain of salt... All I know is the Sabres look like a playoff team a month into the 09-10 season. Top 8 in the eastern conference come April is the only thing I care about.
carpandean Posted October 26, 2009 Report Posted October 26, 2009 Not good. Not good, at all. We all know what happens when this team thinks that it is good. Didn't they get up into the top few spots last year after starting 6-0-2? Didn't they, then, miss the playoffs due largely to taking games off where they "should" have won?

wjag Posted October 26, 2009 Report Posted October 26, 2009 Power Rankings do matter. Why does fandom pretend they don't? If your team is ranked in the top 10, it says a lot about the quality of your team and its post season potential. I see no point in arguing the distinction between the top five teams. It does remain subjective. But the folks who do the ranking (with the exception of the goofballs) do it from a professional view. I say being ranked 1 or 3 confirms what we see as fans UP TO THIS point, they've been playing like one of the best teams in the league through eight games. Can you forecast a post season berth, hell no.
JujuFish Posted October 26, 2009 Report Posted October 26, 2009 The Sabres have been feeding on the detritus of the league. That doesn't necessarily mean their record is overrated though. All the good teams would be feeding in the same way. It is kind of scary that we're at 6-1-1, a nearly identical record to our start last year at 6-0-2. Wednesday's game will be a very good test. The Devils are a solid team and Brodeur looks as though he's found his groove again. This could very well be the starting Canadian Olympic goalie versus the starting US goalie. That's exciting in and of itself. If Buffalo can take care of the Devils in a solid victory, I will start to become very excited for the season.

Well, as I was trying to point out by starting this thread, the teams on the Sabres schedule have been abysmal. Even Detroit hasn't been any good this year.

Even Detroit hasn't been any good this year. No harm in getting points off abysmal teams, all wins count for two points each. At least we're doing something that we didn't do too well last year.
MattPie Posted October 27, 2009 Report Posted October 27, 2009 While it's fun to see he Sabres highly ranked, they have to take 5 point out of the next three games. While that's certainly possible, it's unlikely any team is going to finish 61-10-11 so eventually the pace has to fall.
Rick in Cheektawoga Posted October 27, 2009 Report Posted October 27, 2009 ALL POINTS COUNT THE SAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
inkman Posted October 28, 2009 Author Report Posted October 28, 2009 ALL POINTS COUNT THE SAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! As well as the over inflated perception of a team by it's fan base. This team is going to lose games. They are going to lose lots of games. It wouldn't surprise me if they go 1-6-1 in their next 8 games. I just don't think people realize how awful the teams on the Sabres schedule have been. They literally played the bottom 8 teams in the league right now. Detroit, Montreal and Phoenix aren't terrible, but they have played some bad hockey to start the season.
deluca67 Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 It's good to read some level headed thoughts regarding the Sabres start. Not only have they been able to avoid some of the tougher competition so far this season, they have also have had plenty of off days. This Wednesday, Friday & Saturday run they are on should mean they are fresh for every game. The early part of the schedule was a gift from the NHL. That said, they have taken care of the games they should have to this point. They haven't played perfectly. We've seen stretches within games that reminded me of the last two seasons and yet were able to walk away with points. The only regulation loss can be pinned on a poor decision by Ruff. Beat the teams you should beat and try to be .500 against the better teams. There is enough bad teams in the NHL that the Sabres may be able to total enough points for a playoff spot.
LabattBlue Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 gotta love those moron canadiens on the TSN comment board... It is not good to paint with broad strokes. <_<
inkman Posted October 28, 2009 Author Report Posted October 28, 2009 The only regulation loss can be pinned on a poor decision by Ruff. Lalime has to play! Do you not remember him coming in late in the season, trying to shake off months of rust only to perform horribly and kill this teams chances at the playoffs? He needs to stay on the top of his game, so the Sabres don't throw away 10-12 games this year.
LabattBlue Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 Lalime has to play! He needs to stay on the top of his game, so the Sabres don't throw away 10-12 games this year. 3 things are a given... 1. Lalime will not play enough. 2. When he does play, more than likely he will be sup-par(partially because of the lack of activity). 3. DR will do nothing to upgrade the backup goaltending position during the season.
nfreeman Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 I think it's fair to say that the Sabres have passed a couple of tests so far: 1. maintaining focus against the lower-echelon teams (other than the Islanders and Thrashers games), beating those teams and banking the points; and 2. overall upgrade in physical and mental toughness (ie defending Miller and not falling apart at the end of close games). However, as DeLuca and others have pointed out, many key tests remain, including: 3. performing well against upper-echelon teams -- over the next 2.5 weeks, they'll face NJ, Philly twice, Calgary and Boston -- this was something they were terrible at 2 years ago. 4. performing well when the schedule gets heavier. 5. performing well and getting wins when Lalime plays. Phase 2 of the exam starts tonight.
wjag Posted October 30, 2009 Report Posted October 30, 2009 Didn't want to start a new thread.. Just some observations: 1. Carolina had a six game losing streak and Toronto had a seven. 2. Toronto with just two points.. Ouch. Lets hope they don't double that total Friday. 3. Avalanche 10-1-2 and an impressive 8-0-2 in their last ten. 4. Rangers are scoring goals this year. They dump Gomez and add Gaborik and the goals are pouring in. 5. Vancouver, Detroit, Anaheim and Minnesota are bottom feeders. The West is upside down this year. 6. Phoenix who only a couple of weeks ago was first is now fourth in their division. 7. Minnesota 0-8 on the road. Toronto hasn't won in front of the home town folks either. 8. Pittsburgh and Buffalo only teams undefeated on the road. 9. Colorado only undefeated home team. 10. Atlanta has played 5 less games than Rangers, Avalanche, Kings and Sharks. 5 games is a lot in a league that keeps every within a couple of games of each other. 11. Pittsburgh has the best GF-GA differential at +17, Toronto is worst at -18. 12. Islanders lead with 5 OTL
