gregkash Posted March 8, 2006 Report Posted March 8, 2006 My unsung sabres hero of all time would have to be Dave Hannon. He was a beast on the penalty kill and always scored clutch goals.
Taro T Posted March 8, 2006 Report Posted March 8, 2006 My unsung sabres hero of all time would have to be Dave Hannon. He was a beast on the penalty kill and always scored clutch goals. Without Elvis, Hannon was nothing! :o Other than THE goal Dave scored, did he EVER score an even strength goal? I kid. I thought those 2 together were a great pair. I'll think about your topic some and come up with one tomorrow.
Corp000085 Posted March 8, 2006 Report Posted March 8, 2006 Dave Hannan! Dave Hannan! Dave Hannan finally put away the backhand and is mobbed by his teammates! Dave Hannan! And this series is going back to where Jimmy Hoffa is, back to the Meadowlands in New Jersey. I should make a new rule for this board... Nobody is to mention "dave hannan", "Jason Woolley", "Brad May", "Derek Plante", or "Mikal Grosek" and say anything about series clinching goals before i've taken my morning dump.

File this under "too much information".
fushetti Posted March 8, 2006 Report Posted March 8, 2006 Viktor Gordiouk. Man was he good. ;) Jiri Sejba a close second.
inkman Posted March 8, 2006 Report Posted March 8, 2006 Viktor Gordiouk. Man was he good. ;) Jiri Sejba a close second. You forgot to mention Denis Tsygurov. He was the unforgettable.
LabattBlue Posted March 8, 2006 Report Posted March 8, 2006 Two guys who had long Sabre careers come to mind because of their "bland" non-flashy style of play...Craig Ramsay and Bill Hajt.
Rock DJ Posted March 8, 2006 Report Posted March 8, 2006 For the youngsters out there that missed the 70's, Graig Ramsey was head and shoulders above. Talk about HEART. Honorable mention to Hajt and Hawerchuk....
BuffalOhio Posted March 8, 2006 Report Posted March 8, 2006 Mike Ramsey. Best defensive defenseman the Sabres have ever had.
chileanseabass Posted March 8, 2006 Report Posted March 8, 2006 Mike Ramsey. Best defensive defenseman the Sabres have ever had. I'll second that one. He was the heart and soul of the team for good while.
mphs mike Posted March 8, 2006 Report Posted March 8, 2006 I'll second that one. He was the heart and soul of the team for good while. I put Hajt in Mike Ramsey's category. without taking anything away from Rammer.
bflotim1 Posted March 8, 2006 Report Posted March 8, 2006 My vote is for Rick Vaive. The guy was an unmovable force in front of the opposing team's net and, unless years of drinking labatt's is clouding my recollecection, he seemed to score a number of timely goals which helped the sabres make the playoffs during the late 80s/early 90s. Granted, the Sabres didn't do much in the playoffs once they got there.
Taro T Posted March 8, 2006 Report Posted March 8, 2006 Stu Barnes. (I'm not sure if the captain can be an "unsung hero", but others have chosen Ramsey (who played in All-Star games by the way in addition to being captain, so I'm not certain how "unsung" he was), so why not.) I thought about going with Luce, Spencer, Hajt, or Peterson but decided to go with Stu. A few others that have been mentioned are also good choices.
bob_sauve28 Posted March 8, 2006 Report Posted March 8, 2006 Bob Sauve. He won the Vezena with Edwards and had the better playoff performances and better Goals Against Average.
X. Benedict Posted March 8, 2006 Report Posted March 8, 2006 I always thought Tony McKegney never got much recognition and he lit it up all the time. Andre Savard was a solid player too. Never got much ink.
gregkash Posted March 8, 2006 Author Report Posted March 8, 2006 Im only considering players that I've actually seen and remember.. meaning from 87 (when i was 3) on.. Stu Barnes is a good one, he was never a superstar.. Rob Ray can also be considered. I mean he's a superstar in buffalo but not in the rest of the NHL..
Toddkaz Posted March 8, 2006 Report Posted March 8, 2006 Dale hawerchuk he came to play every game and was great to watch. He culd pass a puck threw the whole other team and put it on the tape. Cant find guys like that anymore.
Rock DJ Posted March 8, 2006 Report Posted March 8, 2006 Remember a goal Hawerchuk scored where he flipped it in the air over the net from behind, skated to the front, then slapped it in out of mid-air. The other players, including the goalie, didn't even know what happened. A highlight for the ages.....
Toddkaz Posted March 8, 2006 Report Posted March 8, 2006 i watched that game it was sunday afternoon against the detroit red wings I am not sure he ment to but he sure caught on fast to where the puck was going
puma2577 Posted March 9, 2006 Report Posted March 9, 2006 Hawerchuk on the point for the powerplay is what made everything click

Cant find guys like that anymore. Hawerchuk definitely was a gamer, but I don't know that I would call a Hall of Famer "unsung".
gregkash Posted March 9, 2006 Author Report Posted March 9, 2006 Hawerchuk was the man but he has over 500 goals and is in the HoF ... Unsung he is not.
Rock DJ Posted March 9, 2006 Report Posted March 9, 2006 Hawerchuk was the man but he has over 500 goals and is in the HoF ... Unsung he is not. Well, I think he was... in a Sabres uniform, which is this post. His HOF status was assured before he ever got here. While here he basically took a back seat to half the team. Donated a chunk of change, very humble and unassuming.
