There is protocol in the NHL that no team can play three days in a row. However, in the AHL, they allow this so that teams may draw more attendance on weekends, Fri-Sat-Sun. Ya gotta do whatcha gotta do.

These teams also don't have the typical travel budget that an NHL team has. If you look at the blocks in the schedule, they are usually 2 or 3 games all within a decent traveling distance than can be done by bus.

It also gives the players a chance to have some sort of job if they choose, although the average AHL salary is $55k, so they're not that badly off.

The AHL has primarily been a weekend league for as long as I can remember.

Makes for either really good sunday games, if they are really pissed at each other from the first two games, or a really horrible game if both teams are just flat out whooped.
