Just got back from dinner; saw parts of each period, including the impotent 5-on-3. Man, the Sabres do not look sharp tonight at all.

Yeah, but it's different if a goalie is playing once every few weeks vs. knowing he'll play each and every night. Also, the team Biron had infront of him that year is light years ahead of what we've had with Thibault and Lalime.

I forgot Tellqvist, who went 2-1-0 for the Sabres last year. Make that number 44-32-9. I think your second sentence is more relevant than the first. Clearly the 05-06 team was much stronger than last years team, when a backup played a considerable amount due to injury.

Anyone want Max back after that play?....anybody?...me neither. It's only a matter of time before he starts turning the puck over again. I hope Atlanta enjoys his highlight filled 20 point season.

Of course it has to be one-on-one against the only guy who hasn't seen Afinogenov's moves live and in person.

Nice point!

Afinogenov = a Sabre killer!?

Really?

That goal was 2 seasons in the making

Did you miss the four or five (by my count) turnovers that he had during this game? I laughed out loud at two of them that were just classic Max.

Are you kidding me? Max.. REALLY?

The Enigma!!!

How ironical that he returns to ice this game for Atlanta.

He has to be pumped about that goal at that time in the game.

Did not see the game tonight or any of the replays yet.

Was at last night's win over NYI.

Too bad they could not keep the streak going, especially with La La in net.

Is it never going to work with him?

Where was th offense tonight?

Did they blow their load against the Isles???

Enjoy the rest of the weekend all.

Well, you can't win them all. I fully expected the Sabres to lose tonight going into the game. Here's what I saw:

- The Sabres did not show up to play in the first two periods and dominated play in the third. Where was that type of play during the first two periods? It looked like Atlanta outworked and outhustled the Sabres during the first two periods. Buffalo really started off flat and that killed them.

- The Sabres got destroyed on Special Teams. They gave up 2 PP goals to Atlanta and scored on Stafford's which was too little too late. They did not score on the 2 minute 5-on-3 which likely cost them the game.

- Tyler Myers looked human tonight. I don't think he played a very good game overall tonight. I think he went down too early on Kovalchuk's first goal although you can't blame him as the forward, I think it was Gaustad, really needed to play Kovalchuk instead of the slot and looking at the puck. That's okay, tonight was not enough to warrant Myers going back to Kelowna. I can live with it, but I thought he looked ordinary tonight.

- Lalime is really not good with anything up high at all. Aside from Todd White's goal, it looked like the other three were top shelf. I think the book is out on Lalime and you can basically beat him with anything high glove side or just high in general.

- The Sabres have had this bad habit in the past where they are not able to hold onto the momentum after scoring goals, and tonight was the same. Each time the Sabres scored tonight, they let the Thrashers take over and immediately score back. Although, I do think the penalty on Roy that led to the White PP goal was very questionable. I'm not sure how lifting a guy's stick constitutes hooking, but whatever.

- Credit to Hedberg. He beat the Sabres yet again. Great rebound control and he looked really good in net tonight.

Overall, you could see this loss coming a mile away. The Sabres are coming off scoring 12 goals in their last two games, Lalime was in net, and it was the second of back-to-back games. The last one is not a great excuse as Atlanta played last night in New Jersey, but I kind of expected the loss tonight for the other reasons. And, Atlanta's a really good team not to be taken for granted. I think Atlanta will make the playoffs this year, they've got some really good players there now.

They should come right back with Lalime next Saturday. I wouldn't want to see fragile Miller overtaxed with 3 starts in 11 days.

What a waste of two points. For all positive praise Ruff should get for the adjustments in the system he should get equally blamed for this horrible decision.

You're right. It would have been smart to waste Miller's talents tonight, the way the team played and all. Because then, the Sabres would be undefeated in regulation heading into mid-December, have only four losses (all Lalime starts) by April, and completely fall apart when the overtaxed starting goalie who got little rest finally crumbled.

I was at the game. The Sabres looked awful. Poor decisions, turn-overs, bad D. Yuck.

Myers was benched for a while, I think early in the second - right after he got beat bad behind the net. I didn't see him afterward until sometime in the third. Maybe I missed him - although it's hard to miss him.

Connolly is the new Roy - bad decisions, poor passing, turn-overs galore.

What I saw offensively overall was an unwillingness to bring the puck in deep - some of the Sabres simply looked like they didn't want to hassle with getting into hairy play in front of the net. They were passing or leaving the puck at the blue line for others coming into the zone. There was no commitment at all to getting the puck to the net on their sticks.

When in the zone they looked confused, like there was no game plan to follow.

Rivet had an awful, awful night. He was slow and getting beat. Lydman was Lydman from last year. There was no physical play from Tallinder at all. AT ALL.

Lalime - on the shots he saved - looked alright. This game was by no means a game he lost. The whole team lost this game.

Grier still put in an effort. And I will say The General looked alright.

Other "game night experience" things:

When to Morrisey's for our pre-game meal. I thought it would be larger in there considering the size of the building. The food was okay, not bad, not great. It was crowded, of course, and loud. The hostess sat people who came in after us before us - which really soured my impression of the place from that point on.

Up in the lower 300's near the corner, we had a lively section. The guys a few rows behind us were funny as hell all night. When a Sabre would dump it to Lalime, one of them would yell "THAT WAS A GREAT SAVE! GOOD JOB, LALIME!"

Dude at the concession stand FORGOT HOW TO OPERATE THE REGISTER while trying to cash me out - like a minute before the second period was about to begin. Kept pushing buttons and looked terribly confused and upset. All I got was a Coke and popcorn. I finally said "would you please ask for help, I'd really like to get back to my seat." He just opened the drawer and handed me change.

What is the song they use at the arena for PPs? Is it some Rammstein tune?

Do you honestly believe that Miller would have had no effect on the outcome. That maybe making one or two more saves than the 23 that Lalime managed wouldn't have helped even a little.

You keep worrying about April. The Sabres need to accumulate points now when the schedule is soft and they are playing teams they should beat. Keep resting Miller when there is no need to and the games in April will be meaningless.
