cdexchange Posted October 17, 2009 Report Posted October 17, 2009 Was tonight the first time an opposing player has ever received a standing O at the arena? That was pretty damn cool.
SabresBillsFan Posted October 17, 2009 Report Posted October 17, 2009 Good news is Atlanta played in NJ tonight, so they're getting ready to board a flight. They have the shorter straw... Hey don't forget tomorrow is Max's return! Hopefully he coughs up a few that lead to Buffalo goals.
SwampD Posted October 17, 2009 Report Posted October 17, 2009 Was tonight the first time an opposing player has ever received a standing O at the arena? That was pretty damn cool. Who and why? What did I miss?
wonderbread Posted October 17, 2009 Report Posted October 17, 2009 Hecht was everywhere tonight. I don't like bumping him up to the first line though. I love the way that Grier-Kennedy-Hecht line can grind along the boards and I'd like to see that stay together as much as possible. Yes, he earned being bumped up, but I still wouldn't do it. It also looks like Paille earned another start. When Vanek's back, I'd move Ellis up to the press box. At times tonight i thought to myself that Hecht was really playing hard. My conclusion is that he knows that was floating heard everyone talking smack and he stepped up. It was nice to see he and JJ Pommers break their collective cherries. Also I could hear Kennedy yelling "Greiersy" He sounded like a 14 year old girl. Anyone notice Hank standing there and gave the wtf look as Miller was smashed. Goose had to step in. He didn't play to terrible tonight however. All in all he is a shell of the player that he was when he signed his contract. The fourth line is awesome creating opportunies, as far as Ellis he seems to be he is playing tough and I like it. But then again I'm just a guy drinking beer on my couch. Myers is the real freaking deal. How sweet will it be to have a smooth skating huge D man that can take the body and add offense. The second period was the sloppiest period this season by far. The must have deviated from the system.
JohnRobertEichel Posted October 17, 2009 Report Posted October 17, 2009 As of right now, we are the best team in the NHL in terms of points-per-game (1.8). It looks like the additions of Myers and Grier have really helped balance out the roster lineup. When everyone's healthy, I'm looking at: Miller Lalime Rivet-Butler Myers-Tallinder Lydman-Sekera Vanek-Roy-Stafford MacArthur-Connolly-Pominville Hecht-Gaustad-Grier Paille-Mair-Kaleta Healthy scratches: Paetsch, Montador, Ellis Back to Portland: Kennedy
SwampD Posted October 17, 2009 Report Posted October 17, 2009 I have to say that right now, [choke] I think deluca is right. [gasp] Montador is our worst defensemen and not a top 4 guy. Lydman is right behind him.
wonderbread Posted October 17, 2009 Report Posted October 17, 2009 would DR dare waive/trade Paetsch? We have a D-man glut. I'm not convinced Paetsch is any better than Mike Weber in any case. Sekera coming back eventually. I'd like to see Kennedy develop at this level. Play the kid its not like playing guys like Kaleta didn't pan out. Kennedy seems to be in the right place at the right time.

Lydman is right behind him. Yeah but it seems like he's wrong about the deterrent effect of hammering someone who runs your goalie. The beatdown just seemed to embolden the Islanders.

As far as Kennedy goes if you have been watching him since training camp he hasn't been skating as hard as he was in preseason and I agree I think he will be sent down soon. For a guy his size he needs to use that speed to his advantage and dish the puck around to his wingers.
Stoner Posted October 17, 2009 Report Posted October 17, 2009 Interesting that Lindy seems to want to cool off the Myers Fever a bit. In his presser he said he thought Myers didn't have the same legs tonight.

The beatdown just seemed to embolden the Islanders. That's true. And there is also something to say about chemistry. Don't fix what ain't broke.

Lydman is right behind him. I have been saying this since we signed Montador that he's a 6th or 7th defenseman at best. He hustle's and plays hard and will take the body but he coughs up the puck alot and it's so obvious when you watch him play. His ice time you can tell is going down each game and Myers and Tallinder's time is going up. I think it's time to sit Montador and put Nathan in. Maybe a night in the pressbox will wake him up alittle.

In his presser he said he thought Myers didn't have the same legs tonight. I have watched everygame that Myers has played this season including preseason. He had a decent game tonight but not his best. I know he scored his first NHL goal but that's not what I'm getting at. I think Lindy probably means defensively! I like Myers alot and this kid is the future of this team but he's not going to be on every game it just doesn't happen. You can't always be on your A game.

I saw what tv allowed me to see of his play. He completely deeked out one guy at the blue line by stopping and starting, he dropped down to block a high slot shot, he rushed the goal and scored on a backhand. I saw him swallow up folks behind the net and take the puck away. What I saw, I thought was pretty darn good.

It's probably his way of protecting the kid. He's a brilliant coach -- whatever he's trying to do, I trust him implicitly.

darksabre Posted October 17, 2009 Report Posted October 17, 2009 Who and why? What did I miss? Biron. also, I think this is the first game I've started getting a minor chubby for this team. If they can keep this up...
deluca67 Posted October 17, 2009 Report Posted October 17, 2009 2 points? Blah. 6 goals? Whatever. 36 saves by Miller? sighhhh. The highlight I will be watching over and over again is the return of Paul Gaustad to the lineup. I just hope it wasn't a "blast from the past." I hope it is a sign of things to come.
LabattBlue Posted October 17, 2009 Report Posted October 17, 2009 Game thoughts... - I said I wanted to see an exciting game, not a sloppily played one(the Sabres in their own end). - I expected Lindy to rip them a new a-hole during intermissions, but they came out for the 2nd and 3rd periods playing a lot like the previous period. - Two games in person for me, two wins! Break out the champagne! - Despite a goal and an assist, I continue to be unimpressed with Connolly. - MacArthur and Hecht were the best forwards by a country mile. - If the Islanders had received some decent goaltending, they might have won the game. - Kaleta had a great check in the 3rd, but that was about in in terms of physical play. Don't forget your roots young man. - I thought Lydman really struggled with the puck. - The Sabres blueliners need to remember that there is more to the game than worrying about how quickly they can jump up into the play. - Pominville with a rocket. Good to see the population grow. - I wonder if there was ever a Sabres game where both of the opposition goalies were former Sabres? - I thought if you get off a shot on goal, there is no penalty shot called? - I thought Paille put forth a good effort. - All this being said, the Sabres scored 6 goals, beat a team they should and are still undefeated in regulation.
tulax Posted October 17, 2009 Report Posted October 17, 2009 It was really nice to see Biron come into the game off the bench; not just because the Sabres were crushing the Isles. That ovation from the Buffalo fans was awesome and well deserved for a guy whose personality seemed to carry this club at times, especially for the tough lockout seasons. From his post game comments he sounded genuinely surprised.

I love the way that Grier-Kennedy-Hecht line can grind along the boards and I'd like to see that stay together as much as possible. Yes, he earned being bumped up, but I still wouldn't do it. Agree. Hecht has been pretty solid so far this year and he was very strong tonight. Uh oh...Kaleta is on pace for a 30 Goal season! In all seriousness though, I am really starting to love his game. He is proving that he can provide solid enough play to warrant being out there for regular shifts, and not the 2 minutes per game that Peters was getting. Agree with this too. I'd say the bigger test is to see how they play in the 2nd of back to back games. Agree with this too. This was a real weakness last year. I have been saying this since we signed Montador that he's a 6th or 7th defenseman at best. He hustle's and plays hard and will take the body but he coughs up the puck alot and it's so obvious when you watch him play. Maybe a night in the pressbox will wake him up alittle. Welcome to the board, but at least check the box score before you post this kind of statement. Monty had more ice time than either Myers or Tallinder -- which is the opposite of the recent trend. I'll be very surprised if Sekera plays ahead of Montador. Me too. I just think maybe Lindy wants to cool things off a bit. It's probably his way of protecting the kid. He's a brilliant coach -- whatever he's trying to do, I trust him implicitly. Joke around all you like, but it's going to be time to come across with a real post about good coaching pretty soon -- hopefully in about 22 hours. The highlight I will be watching over and over again is the return of Paul Gaustad to the lineup. I just hope it wasn't a "blast from the past." I hope it is a sign of things to come. I thought you would like that one. I certainly did. Immediate retribution, with no hesitation. A few other game notes: 1. This was the least impressive game of the year for the Sabres, IMHO. I thought they were generally much sloppier in the defensive zone and with puck control. Not nearly as crisp on the clearing passes. It's no coincidence that they were outshot. 2. Awful first couple of PPs. 3. Gaustad’s line started 1st & 2nd periods and played 1st shift after Sabre goals. Everyone on the 4th line had at least 12 minutes. That is a real rolling of 4 lines. It's also a real effective 4th line. 4. The Islanders have a number of speedy forwards. Tavares looks like the real deal. 5. Other than TC’s goal, TC, Pommer and Roy were still ineffective. TC’s line had its lowest ice time of the season -- Lindy must be getting PO’d. 6. Very nice move by Mac on the penalty shot. I can see him getting into the shootout rotation. 7. Myers had a number of very strong plays in the offensive zone. There was one shift in the 2nd where he was down low and causing so many problems that the Islanders had to take a penalty. 8. Overall, I'll take the W gladly, because this was the kind of win they didn't get last year, but that kind of effort against a good team would've gotten them a loss. 9. Not sure who's going in goal tomorrow but I'd guess Miller. I'd be fine with Lalime though.

TC’s line had its lowest ice time of the season -- Lindy must be getting PO’d. You can also say Lindy likes to conserve his players' energy for back-to-back game nights. No doubt the Thrashers are more of a threat than the Islanders. I don't know, I thought Pommers and Roy had a pretty good night. They were fore and back checking pretty well and neither made a horrendous turn-over like the Tin Man did. And you can't forget Pommer's goal. Again, there were no issues with getting the goals, so I tend to think LR may have been "resting" some players on purpose. I'm sure he must be happy being able to roll four lines and get goals out of everyone - I know I am.
FogBat Posted October 17, 2009 Report Posted October 17, 2009 Hey don't forget tomorrow is Max's return! Hopefully he coughs up a few that lead to Buffalo goals. Nothing like watching Max overskating the puck. Let's see if he keeps this habit up.
