Calvin Posted October 11, 2009 Report Posted October 11, 2009 Isn't it curious that in all the three games so far the other team's goalie has come off looking All-Star? Is it just a coincidence that all the opposing goalies have all had lights-out games against the Sabres? We're getting bucket-loads of shots on goal, no doubts there.. is it that we're getting the wrong type of shot on goal? Is there what can be classified as a 'useful' shot on goal, versus a pointless, stat-padding kind? I'm seriously mystified what to make of this team now - they're showing the grit to tough it out and win 1-0 or 2-1, but at the same time we're the lowest scoring team in the league already by a pretty long margin. You can bet when we play the Flyers or Caps, scoring one or two will not suffice to win. What do you guys think?

There are a lot of people who didn't want the Sabres to make passes or wait for the "good" shot, and to simply throw the puck at the net. They're getting their way, with this team, and so far, it's succeeding.

matter2003 Posted October 11, 2009 Report Posted October 11, 2009 Goals will come. I have a feeling we are gonna be watching a lot of these type of games...Ruff seems to have picked up some things from Mike Babcock at the Team Canada games, who believes in the pressure, puck control game that Detroit plays so well. They outshoot the other team badly in most games(Sabres averaging a 16+ shot difference so far---38 to 22), and many times don't score a ton of goals, although they usually score more than 1 per game. That being said, I don't care how this team plays, as long as they win. This is Boston Bruins hockey from 2 years ago, except the Sabres are being offensive minded and not allowing many shots. The additions made to the team allow them to play this way much more than previous years---Grier, Montador and Myers all can be physical and grinding type players when need be. As long as Miller plays strong in goal and the Sabres continue outshooting teams like they have, they can win a LOT of games this way...
SwampD Posted October 11, 2009 Report Posted October 11, 2009 I was watching NHL On the Fly this morning. They do a great job giving you a feel for the game because they don't just show goals. They show chances, big hits, and goals. They showed six replays of Nashville's chances and only 3 of Buffalo's (and one was the goal). Even though the other goalies have been making a lot of stops, I wouldn't really say they have looked like all-stars because the saves they are making aren't all that tough.

I didn't see yesterday's game, but I'd have to disagree with Labarbera. He looked very strong against Buffalo.
wjag Posted October 11, 2009 Report Posted October 11, 2009 One look at the standings and the GF and GA for the Sabres leap off the page. Most teams are in the > 10 and < 20. Some have played one or two more games. But 4 GF and 3 GA is stunning considering they have 5 points.

I think my favorite part about the stats this season so far is that the Islanders haven't won a single game, but have 3 points in 3 games.

At least Buffalo has a couple wins unlike the other two.
SabresFan526 Posted October 12, 2009 Report Posted October 12, 2009 I've seen most of all three of the games. I saw half the second and third of the Phoenix game. I kind of felt that Buffalo kind of looked out of sorts in the second and really sloppy in the third against Montreal. They of course outshot Montreal, but Carey Price is a pretty decent goalie, but I thought overall the Sabres could have played better. I really didn't like the Phoenix game at all. I thought the Sabres could have played much better, especially against a team that should have been tired. Having said that, Labarbera really played a solid game and it took two really good shots to beat him, especially the Vanek goal which was a lightning release off Vanek's stick. As for the Nashville game, there is nothing you can do about that. Pekka Rinne was on fire and he really didn't allow anything except for Grier's no look goal. He was really really good and made some huge, fantastic saves. I thought Buffalo played almost a perfect game, but Rinne was not letting anything in, and he did look like an All-Star. I think he very well could be an All-Star this year. He was really good for Nashville last year and was awesome last night. Overall, I'm okay with it. I think the offense will come. I also think it's easier to play well on defense than necessarily on offense. But, I take some encouragement in that they are controlling the play, outshooting the opponents, and just not getting the goals. I agree with Miller in that the goals will come, but as long as they play this stifling style of defense, I'm not concerned. Just my take.
shrader Posted October 12, 2009 Report Posted October 12, 2009 We're forgetting about another goalie who has looked like an all star in all 3 of those games.
Calvin Posted October 12, 2009 Author Report Posted October 12, 2009 We're forgetting about another goalie who has looked like an all star in all 3 of those games. Haha.. good one Shrader. You're right, much as we gripe about the offense only scoring 4 goals, we should be glad Miller has been strong and not let in a bucketload. I watched all three games so far, and I think apart from the big three (Vanek, Roy, Connolly), everyone else has been getting pucks on net any which way they can. I thought against Rinne they could have shown more patience and shot higher too, but I'd settle for getting some traffic in front of the goalie and getting the puck in the vicinity. The goals will come.. I'm just impatient :nana:
