matter2003 Posted October 11, 2009 Report Posted October 11, 2009 postgame, Lindy said Sekera will be out "a period of time" and that it looked "serious"... Looks like Myers is staying...
rickshaw Posted October 11, 2009 Report Posted October 11, 2009 regardless of Sekera's injury, Myers should be a mainstay. He's been fantastic. So calm and cool. Love it!
matter2003 Posted October 11, 2009 Author Report Posted October 11, 2009 regardless of Sekera's injury, Myers should be a mainstay. He's been fantastic. So calm and cool. Love it! True, but I am sure the Sabres will find a way to screw it up...
matter2003 Posted October 11, 2009 Author Report Posted October 11, 2009 In his 3rd NHL game, Myers is already leading all Sabres in ice time...Wow...I guess that says all that needs to be said of how good Lindy thinks this kid is and can be...
DonInBuffalo Posted October 11, 2009 Report Posted October 11, 2009 IMO it's plain as day obvious that Myers is already the best defenseman on the team. He's here to stay.
SabresFan526 Posted October 11, 2009 Report Posted October 11, 2009 I'm not sure Myers was going anywhere even if all of the defensemen were healthy as he's been arguably the best defenseman on the team to date. With Sekera out for "a period of time," there's no way the send him back to juniors. It just won't happen with this injury. They'll hopefully just plug Lydman or Paetsch in for Sekera and move on. That'd be the right thing to do at this point. From the looks of the replay, it looked like Sekera either dislocated his shoulder or broke his arm. That'd be my unprofessional opinion based on the replay.
billsrcursed Posted October 11, 2009 Report Posted October 11, 2009 Sekera seemed tentative and "unsure" these past three games. I hope that isn't a mainstay. I'd like to see him bounce back from this injury and get his game back. That said, Myers would have been here regardless, kid's for real...

That's about it. Did anyone catch the DR interview between periods? He said something about losing a year before Myers turns into an unrestricted free agent. What did he mean? Keeping him here uses up a year quicker? That's what I'm guessing. Anyone know the years before all that happens?

I would hope they ink this guy to a very long term deal well before we have to worry about him going any where near the market. If he is defintly the player we think he is two years from now then throw the money at him. Let's make him a Sabre for life.
jlombard1999 Posted October 11, 2009 Report Posted October 11, 2009 Thiis is the same situation we have seen in the past with players like Schenn & Staal. Lets just hope hope Buffalo management take the same chance and make the team better now.
That Aud Smell Posted October 11, 2009 Report Posted October 11, 2009 If he is defintly the player we think he is two years from now then throw the money at him. Let's make him a Sabre for life. i am as encouraged by the young man's play as anyone, but it'd be more than a little imprudent to anoint this kid the savior of the franchise based on his work over 3 games. no one can guarantee that he will evolve into the next pronger or chara. but i think it's a safe bet that if he sticks with the team for the rest of the season, there will come a time where there will be much wailing and gnashing of teeth by the faithful over the kid's apparent regression -- his loss of confidence -- lack of mojo --there will be statements about how he inexplicably "looks tentative/lost out there." myers is likely playing in one of those "he doesn't know any better" modes right now, where everything is coming pretty easily, pretty naturally. that won't last -- it almost never does. all of which is not to say that he's not the next pronger or chara -- he could be. but it is just too soon to tell.

He's reminding me a bit of Butler last year, where he played smart and didn't take all that many chances. Then he goes and makes a play like he did on the MacArthur goal against Phoenix and completely kills that comparison.

How many times did you see Butler around the opponent's net or behind their blue line last year? I saw Myers do both several times last night.

Cereal Posted October 12, 2009 Report Posted October 12, 2009 How many times did you see Butler around the opponent's net or behind their blue line last year? Hockey season could not have come too soon to Buffalo this year.
wjag Posted October 12, 2009 Report Posted October 12, 2009 I think we all remember the play where he stormed the net. A bit of a surprise. It only works if someone recognizes it and covers the point. I guess I'm ambivalent about it. D belong on the blue line. What I have liked so far is his reach. He can stretch those wings and stick a long way.
Calvin Posted October 12, 2009 Report Posted October 12, 2009 How many times did you see Butler around the opponent's net or behind their blue line last year? I saw Myers do both several times last night. That being said, Butler has been more offensive-minded this year too. We are not too far away from Butler & Myers being our shutdown pair, and the foundation for this defense too. If Sekera can up his game this season that gives us three young and talented D-men, and the beginnings of a franchise defense, with Miller in goal! Dare we dream?

Sekera being forced to take a breather may not be the worst thing to happen to him. He hasn't been skating well, doesn't look comfortable with his pairing yet, and has displayed some very limited vision with his passing. A little rehab time could help him in the long run.

I think the key is your partner on defense needs to compliment the aggressive style....more of a stay at home guy. I would like to see Lydman teamed with Myers once Toni gets healthy.

He can stretch those wings and stick a long way. A forward recognizing that a D-man is rushing the puck and covering his point spot is not an issue. The kids on my son's squirt team (9 and 10 year olds) do it without a problem. If he has the ability and the opportunity, go for it.
Mbossy Posted October 12, 2009 Report Posted October 12, 2009 Sekera has bruised (maybe broke) ribs and will be out minimum of two weeks. Lydman's good to go against Detroit and will end up taking his spot next to Montador, so that's leaves Butler-Rivet and Tallinder-Myers.

I don't get to see him play much. I'm guessing you're inferring that his goals come close in. I'm not saying don't do it, just be careful. Over aggressive D men result in odd man breaks.
