What was I saying about the lively boards?

Bottom line: In a statement game the Sabres have been getting ready for since April, this was an epic failure.

Loss. Where was Vanek all night? It seemed like every time I noticed him it was along the blue line.

Glad to see Sekera back on the ice.

For those that see the game better than me, was Myers looking as good I thought he did?

He looked good IMHO. My concern is that he can't carry Tallinder all year so I hope he gets a new partner soon. Myers is the real deal. Very steady. And better offensively than you'd think.

GO SABRES!!!

foreplay is... i mean, was great.

No stretch, he dove, or sat down or what straight at miller. Not saying he would have stopped it but the puck flew in as soon as he saw he was about to get hit and adjusted to it.

Not sure if you're being sarcastic or being serious, either way, from what I have seen, he has impressed.

No sarcasm. He laid some hits, under control, jumped up in the play, didn't make any huge mistakes and drew two penalties winding up from behind his goal line. Unbelievable first game in the NHL.

I hate to say it, but I have to agree. After the first 30 minutes, the energy died down considerably. When they should have come out firing in the 3rd Period, they came out playing LR hockey, safe enough to get out of town with a point. Then, they get to OT, and all of a sudden they are keeping the puck in the zone, and firing at the net again.

If they had even attempted that in the 3rd, it may have been a different game.

A no goal, and a fluke goal, we were lucky to get a point out of this one with the way we played the third.

As soon as they scored, I looked to my wife and said, "someone on the Sabres board was just talking about how live the boards seemed tonight."

I blame you for our o/t loss.

J/K

I blame Hank. He's horrible...

Kevin Sylvester said they are new boards. Ryan better take note.

Miller is effusive in his praise of the team's performance. "Great game... great performance... tremendous effort." He's all smiles.

I hate to pick on Miller, but... YOU LOST THE GAME.

I watched Gaustad yucking it up every time his face was on the screen.

This team is soul-less.

Lindy sounds constipated again in the postgame press conference.

Here we go again.

This team is like the TV show Three's Company. You can have a new season and change up the cast a little. In the end you end up with the same sorry show with the same pathetic plot line every episode. There was very little difference between this game and the 164 we had to endure the past two seasons.

One positive note, I hated the Myers draft pick. Which I will readily admit wasn't as much about the player as it was the complete lack of faith I have in those drafting. If tonight is only the beginning of what he can bring to the organization? They might want to start now on a long term contract. Say about 15 years? The kid is a NHL player right now. To send him to juniors would be unfair to the other junior teams.

I'm pretty disappointed tonight. There were many individual Sabres players who I thought played great games, but the team seemed to play extremely conservative overall. Miller wasn't really tested, and the only two goals he let in was one that should not have counted since there was clearly goalie interference and another that was a complete fluke. Not great.

However, if there are a few positives to take away from Game 1 of 82, I take this:

Tyler Myers is really good. He played a really good game. One of my biggest complaints to come from tonight is that Myers should be playing the point on the powerplay, NOT Steve Montador. I don't know where Lindy comes off thinking Montador can contribute anything offensively, especially on the PP.

I liked Chris Butler's nastiness. I was hoping someone would annihilate Gomez. This team needs more snarl, and I liked seeing that tonight.

Tim Kennedy looked really good, too. Even after Mair comes back, the Sabres should make a move to try and keep Kennedy up. Perhaps that means getting rid of Paille somehow, but Kennedy is too good to send back down to Portland. I like his game a lot.

I thought Hecht played a decent game. Not great, but not bad like he played last year.

I was generally disappointed with the play of the top 6, except for Connolly. He played a good game tonight in both ends of the rink. But, the top 6 were not creating chances and except for the first PP, the powerplay looked really out of sorts.

Oh well, come out with a point, but highly unsatisfying.

I've grown less impressed with Ryan Miller with each passing season. It's becoming apparent that he's incapable of stealing a game and he certainly is incapable of keeping the opposition off the scoreboard. At the end of the day, he'll be regarded as nothing more than an average goalie.

I think Three's Company ran for 12 years as well.

Another lost lead, another game where we failed to play a full 60 minutes. What else is new? I quess this new additude the team has was shown during the 15 to 7 minute period of the 1st.

Ruff changes lines,of course, in the third. After a "fantastic" practice on wensesday, the TVR line looks done already. What a stupid experiment that is. Roy and Connolly are basically the same player. Why put them together?

It looks like we'll have to wait to the deadline again to potentially see a Power Forward in the top 6,only to leave during the offseason. Heavens forbid DR gives up on a failing offensive formula. Would Mc Carthur even be a top 9 forward on any other team except here? Its maddening.

Pominville loses the game for us by failing to connect on his wrister in the slot late in the third. AFTER tc works his ass off to get the puck in the corner. Glad to see he'll be here for another 6 seasons.

Myers and TC were the highlights tonight. Myers looks ready for the big time now. And TC finally looks like he's gonna keep his head up,and play his game that he has been dying to play for almost 4 years now

Yea cuz a superstar goalie sits in the blue when a player is sliding in on him not even looking to stop or when a shot of the board bounces out right to a play for a instant one timer.

Miller played fine, he didnt see a lot of shots but still looked good. a bad call and a bad bounce was the reason for the loss.

A better question is, What was Miller doing on that play?

He said he was trying to get out of the way. Well played. Isn't hugging the post Goaltending 101?

Good post indeed. When i seen Montador sharpening his stick before the OT,i said come on Monty you know your gonna score for another 15 games.

But all seriousness, the PP was atrocious. I think in part to the fact that the top 2 lines were exactly the same on the PP units. I dont like that at all. I think the Goose should down low,on a unit with Stafford and Vanek. On the back should be Connolly and Myers. Like you pointed out,Myers looks ready for duty all over the ice and Montador doesn't cut it. In addition,I keep hearing he has a killer slap shot. The second unit should have Roy between Mac and Pommer with Kennedy or Shakira and Rivet on the back end. I think the points should always consist of someone who can move around defenders and make plays. And someone who can blast the puck on next and make smarter moves with the puck.

Butler and Kennedy both looked great. Not only was he all over the offensive zone, Kennedy also has got a small amount of grit to his game, that would take Pommer another 2 seasons to up hold.
