matter2003 Posted September 28, 2009 Report Posted September 28, 2009 Is the NHL the only sport where teams play a differing number of preseason games? Some teams play as few as 4 games, others as many as 9 games, with teams all the way in between. What the heck kind of scheduling is this? Doesn't the league realize it poses a big inequality to its teams, if not for the simple fact a star player getting injured in preseason game 9 for one team isn't on an even playing field with a team only playing 4 games. Basically a team with 9 preseason games has 5 extra games to have their starters injured over a team only playing 4. How exactly does the NHL determine the number of games each team plays? How can they think its fair for a team to have a player injured in its 9th preseason game, when it doesn't force other teams to potentially have the same thing happen to them by virtue of playing 5 fewer games?
sweeper Posted September 28, 2009 Report Posted September 28, 2009 The teams determine how many preseason games they play. And if you think any of the leagues star players play every preseason game, you're nuts. Aside from that, you cannot not play a game simply because you might get hurt...the season is 82 games long, injuries happen. Ask Tim Connolly about that. He was out there in a couple preseason games again this year.
LabattBlue Posted September 28, 2009 Report Posted September 28, 2009 I think the number of preseason road games is determined by how much money the team is willing to spend. It takes a lot of sugar packets to take a team on the road! ;)

nobody Posted September 28, 2009 Report Posted September 28, 2009 I think that soccer tends to do that also. Anyone know about the NBA and MLB?

Well, most NFL teams played 4 and a few, such as the Bills, played 5. Of course, the Bills didn't even bother to dress their starters for the 5th one, so yeah, I guess the NHL IS the only one. ;)
