I am shocked to see how many quality free agents that are stilllooking for jobs? You can't tell me this late in the game that there are not guys available that would help the Sabres? Dominic Moore, Dennis Seidenberg, Boyd Devereaux, Dmitri Kalinin-just kidding about him! Camp opens Sunday and it looks like they are going with what they got?

In Buffalo the status quo is the way to go!

we haven't signed any of them

neither have any of the other 29 teams, or their AHL affiliates

what does that say?

I know it's a joke comment and all, but I might as well point out that Kalinin signed with a KHL team. He is not available for any NHL team at this point.

Basic supply and demand economics would tell you that players are going to make less money in the coming years, the league may get better because only the best players will be on the ice and we'll see a lockout in 2012 because the players will feel cheated.

Here's  to the next two seasons.

I'd live to see them bring back Peca and Moore. Let 'em battle for a job, and may the best man win.

Word on some streets is that Peca got an invite to camp. He has been skating with the boys (Biron, McKee, et al over the summer at the Pepsi center).

I don't think that means anything, I think he does that every year with them

Yeah, Sullivan's article this past week noted that Peca still has a home in the area, is from Ontario, etc.

Every year Biron and Peca, McKee, etc come back for catching up and stuff.

I would have loved for them to sign McKee, but think Peca would be a nice fit back in Buffalo.

With all of the arguments of "having too many forwards" Regier keeps spouting though, I don't think that it is likely.

Moore was also really good on faceoffs, and this is one of those intangible factors the Sabres don't have but need. I've never been sold on Gaustad, Connolly is injured way too much, and I would love these 2 guys back in Blue and Gold.

In general regarding the initial topic, I think the salary cap has created the elimination of the middle class in terms of NHL players. Or more realistically, teams go with one of two strategies, eliminate the middle class or have exclusively middle class players. What I mean by this is that many teams have gone with a top heavy approach spending about 30-50% of their cap on 5-6 players and the rest on players who are cheap or on entry level deals. Pittsburgh has basically gone that way. Detroit, to a large extent, spends their cap in the same way. So what happens is that teams look to get value out of their lower paid players than pay middle tier money for middle tier players.

The Sabres, on the other hand, are firm believers in building a team predominantly of middle class players. Vanek and Miller are the only players paid at elite level. The bulk of the team is paid middle class salaries. Interesting strategies, but it seems the more successful teams have a few really top talent players and try to get value at the low end whereas the Sabres try to build a team mostly of middle class talent. Either scoring is evenly spread out and you get equal production from everyone leading to a very good team like we saw from 2005-2007 or you have a very mediocre team like we've seen the past two years. We'll see what happens, but that has generally been the Sabres philosophy since Regier has been here. Even with the Hasek teams, it was Hasek and a bunch of mediocre players who performed above their talent level.

As for the available players, with Mair gone for what looks to be the beginning of the season and potentially longer, the Sabres might do well to see if they can get a depth center for that fourth line such as a Peca or Moore and waive Cody McCormick to Portland. However, my gut tells me that the Sabres will go into the season with a fourth line of Paille-Ellis-Kaleta and not make an additional signing. I'm really hoping they can find a taker for Tallinder. I'm just hoping some team faces some major injuries to their blue line to where we can trade Tallinder. Oh well.

and a decent deal.....

But signifacantly less than what was figured prior to the start of FA. IIRC he wanted 3 per year? I guess he will have to wipe his ass with $20's instead of $100's.

Was there ever any word on what the sabres were offering him. I want to say they danced a little before or at the beginning of free agency. Hope he fired his agent!

You're assuming they were actually offering him anything.

Not too bad for what TSN calls "offensive punch" at 13 goals and 32 assists in 81 games last year. He was said to be good on draws, but I was pretty disappointed in him down the stretch with the Sabres last year!

He should be happy to be on the ice!
