I noticed this in the article, in reference to Mancari:

 

“We’ve worked on (a trade), but to no success, and so we’ll continue,” Regier said in the Buffalo News. “We’d love to have him as part of the organization and have him in training camp, but right now we don’t have a contract.”

I may be wrong, but judging by its context, the "that" which you replaced with "(a trade)" was probably referring to a contract, not a trade. He is talking about keeping him in the organization; you don't do that with a trade.
