Foot In The Crease! Posted September 1, 2009 Report Posted September 1, 2009 With preseason starting in only a couple weeks, what do you think the starting lines should be for the upcoming season? Here's my best bet Left wing - Center - Right wing Vanek - Roy - Stafford Paille - Connolly - Pominville Hecht - Gaustad - Grier C-Mac - Mair - Kaleta Defense Craig Rivet - Toni Lydman Steve Montador — Nathan Paetsch Chris Butler - Andrej Sekera Goalie Miller With Matt Ellis, Cody McCormick, Nathan Gerbe, Tyler Myers, Tim Kennedy, Mike Weber, and Mark Mancari on the bench or minors and Henrik Tallinder cut
inkman Posted September 1, 2009 Report Posted September 1, 2009 Paille on the second line makes me want to puke. Nate Paetsch just got a chubby, because your post is the closest he's getting to the top 6 D. For better or wosre (most likely), Tallinder isn't going anywhere and I don't think they will sign Mancari. I can't imagine Myers would stick with the club without being in the top 6. From everything I've heard, as long as he doesn't fall on his face, he'll be there.

Stoner Posted September 1, 2009 Report Posted September 1, 2009 I'm always bemused by fans who want to create lines. They seem to put more thought into it than Lindy does. Lindy blows them up at the first opportunity. What's the point, really?

shrader Posted September 1, 2009 Report Posted September 1, 2009 and Henrik Tallinder cut So they'd be paying him to play somewhere else? There's no way that will ever happen with this budget conscious organization. And really, even though most want him out, I'd still rather have him out on the ice as opposed to Paetsch. But if by some chance they do find a way to unload Tallinder somewhere, Weber or Myers would play before Paetsch ever would. Also, Myers is either in the every day lineup or he's back in juniors. The minors are not an option for him (and the bench shouldn't be either). I wasn't sure if you were trying to imply the AHL as an option for him in your post. I don't think they will sign Mancari. It's in his best interest to sign. He'll probably end up working something out last second, give it his shot in camp, and then hope for a claim when the Sabres waive him.

The only lines you should worry about if you plan on watching the Sabres, should be placed neatly on a compact mirror and disposed of using a crisp, rolled-up $100 bill. It will cost you the same price as a ticket, but at least you will be assured of 3 hours of energetic and exciting product.

carpandean Posted September 2, 2009 Report Posted September 2, 2009 Mair is out through the start of the season, so I would assume Ellis will start in his spot. I agree that Lindy changes up lines a lot, but so does almost every other coach in the NHL. Look at the play-by-play reports on NHL.com and watch the "on the ice" player numbers. The combinations change from game-to-game and from shift-to-shift. Lindy is hardly unique in this regard. Every team has some players that have pretty set spots and others that move around depending on how they are playing. However, even those "set" players have bad stretches and get demoted. I remember watching one Penguins game where they said that Malkin or Crosby (I don't remember which it was) was seeing third-line minutes because of how he was playing. Didn't last long obviously, but the coach was sending a message. Anyway, making lines helps to get a rough idea of what we have or don't have; where the ?'s are and where things are more certain. Sure, Roy and Connolly can be swapped between the top two lines, but you know that (while healthy) each will be on one of them. Who the left wing on the scoring line that Vanek isn't on will be is definitely up in the air - Hecth? Paille? Mac? Gerbe? Kennedy? All are possibilities. I'm guessing: Vanek-Connolly-Stafford (if he signs) MacArthur-Roy-Pommer Hecht-Goose-Grier Paille-Ellis-Kaleta McCormick Defense is anyone's guess at this point. Too many unknowns.
Stoner Posted September 2, 2009 Report Posted September 2, 2009 Too many unknowns. Exactly! I'll get DR explain further.
