deluca67 Posted August 30, 2009 Report Posted August 30, 2009 I was just wondering if all of those who spent the summer downplaying the Sabres lack of any significant move are beginning to get concerned. All we heard all summer was that "it's only July" or "it's only August." Here's comes September and the Sabres are staying pretty much pat. I believe some posted if September came around and the Sabres hadn't done anything that there would be concern. September is two days away. Concerned?

Until we have our last RW signed, I have some remaining hope that something will happen. Stafford may harmlessly sign soon, in which case, not much has changed. A little tougher in the lower ranks, Mike Grier on a more legitimate shutdown line, but that's about it. Some big ??'s such as Myers, Kennedy, Sekera, Butler, Weber, Gerbe, etc., may have big years and pleasantly surprise. Otherwise, mostly the same outlook: with some luck, they'll make the playoffs; without it, they'll miss them again. On the other hand, maybe there is one big deal left with Stafford as a component. It could happen and until I'm sure it won't, there's still a flicker of hope.
Two or less Posted August 30, 2009 Report Posted August 30, 2009 I like the moves they have already made. However, there are 2 glaring moves they didn't make that i really think will cost us badly. One is not moving Tallinder, who i think is just a waste on this roster. Not only a waste of a roster spot, but also salary. Which leads to number 2, not adding a "top 6" forward. I like MacArthur more then most, but i don't think banking on him having a top 6 forward type season is very smart. This team had many weaknesses last season, scoring goals usually wasn't one of them, but in many games, especially late in the season, from opening faceoff you could just tell they had almost no hope of scoring a goal, and when they did, it took like a 5v3 or a really intense effort. They needed somebody else to help put the puck into the net and failed. However, the signings of McCormick, Grier and even Cowan for Portland, as a emergency reserve, i like a lot. But to hope that MacArthur, Gerbe or Kennedy have a great out season, is very Sabres like and very unlikely.
wjag Posted August 31, 2009 Report Posted August 31, 2009 I seem to remember the buzz when DR first said he wasn't going to do too much wrt the lineup. Yet folks persist on here hoping that he was playing hold'em poker and some big announcement was just a few phone calls/days away. The team is cast... The season is about to start... They are who we thought they were... I'm ready... Bring it on...
SwampD Posted August 31, 2009 Report Posted August 31, 2009 Let's see,...Tuesday....Tuesday...wasn't it 23 years ago on that day that you last smiled.

carpandean Posted August 31, 2009 Report Posted August 31, 2009 i'd be highly amused if we end up keeping Tallinder in and he has a monster season! Hmm ... it's like a game of Mad Libs. i'd be highly amused if we end up keeping (Player's Name) in and he (Unlikely Event) ! So far, we have: Tallinder, has a monster season Connolly, stays healthy and puts up a PPG Hecht, rebounds to his old form Stafford, loses the ego and performs consistently

Until something happens with the Stafford sitation (and what the hell, just for that hit and run poster lethbridge broncos, Mancari too), this roster is not set in stone.
... Posted August 31, 2009 Report Posted August 31, 2009 What are the odds Stafford is a hold-out? At this point I'm thinking he will be a hold-out rather than part of a big trade.

The FO would probably like Stafford to hold out. Then at years end, it will be at the top of the excuse list for why they missed the playoffs again! <_<

When he was at his cockiest was when he was scoring the most. It wasn't until he quieted down that his scoring dried up. I get tired of hearing how we need guys with "personality", then as soon aswe get one, we need to beat it down. Is it really that big of a deal that he plays in a rock band?

I think what people mean about his ego is that he seems to give off this vibe like "I'm so great I can turn it on and off at will, so I don't need to bust my butt all the time or listen to what Lindy says" -- and giving him $2.75MM or whatever he ends up with is likely to make it worse. I certainly think he's got a ton of potential, and I suspect most posters here agree. However, the cockiness would be much more tolerable if he hadn't had stretches of 1-goal-in-15-games and 1-goal-in-16-games last year.
