zinranger Posted August 29, 2009 Report Posted August 29, 2009 Please tell me the answer is no. I read somewhere that RJ might not be coming back to do Sabres games this year??? He is not retiring is he? I am a diehard Sabres fan, watched 80 of 82 games last year but I live in California so I am out of touch with local news. Thank you.
Corp000085 Posted August 29, 2009 Report Posted August 29, 2009 I'm fairly confident he either has 1 left on his contract AFTER the 09-10 season. Unless something drastic or tragic happens, he's not going anywhere. Welcome to the board!
repster Posted August 29, 2009 Report Posted August 29, 2009 I was wondering about this myself. There really hasn't been any word on his status. I wrote the following back in July in another thread: Speaking of RJ, I was going to start a thread asking if anyone knew of his status for the coming year. Last I knew, he was undecided as to whether or not to come back. I remember in a game late last year, Harry was trying to convince him by saying that he would get an extended holiday this year with the Olympic break. RJ's reply to that was there was only one person that would be making that decision, and it would be him. Does anyone know anything? I haven't heard any announcement one way or another. This is something that Larry Quinn would probably comment on first... PS, welcome to the board.
bob_sauve28 Posted August 29, 2009 Report Posted August 29, 2009 Personally, I think its time he hung up the mic
Stoner Posted August 29, 2009 Report Posted August 29, 2009 Personally, I think its time he hung up the mic I wouldn't put it that strongly, but I'm not that far behind.
nobody Posted August 29, 2009 Report Posted August 29, 2009 He'll stick it out a few more years until his son takes over.

jwcolour Posted August 29, 2009 Report Posted August 29, 2009 I'm pretty confident he'll be back but when he leaves it will be a sad day for buffalo (atleast for fans).
Ted's Hot Dogs Posted August 29, 2009 Report Posted August 29, 2009 He'll stick it out a few more years until his son takes over. personally, I dont want his son.. We need to start fresh.. Ill nominate Kevin Sylvester
Stoner Posted August 29, 2009 Report Posted August 29, 2009 personally, I dont want his son.. We need to start fresh.. Ill nominate Kevin Sylvester Seriously? Paul Hamilton is miles above him. So is Jim Lorentz, not that he'd want to make a comeback.

jawj80 Posted August 29, 2009 Report Posted August 29, 2009 I really don't want him to go. I bet he has something awesome for when the sabres win the cup and he is dying to get it out. Based on recent trends he might actually die before we even get close again but I really want to be able to hear that call over and over and over again.

If I thought we were going to win cup next year then I would agree with you, but I just don'r see that happening any time in the too distant future
Foligno's Nose Posted August 30, 2009 Report Posted August 30, 2009 Personally, I think its time he hung up the mic I wouldn't put it that strongly, but I'm not that far behind. Blasphemy!!! I will also vote for Paul Hamilton along with the Mark Jeanneret to replace. Harry Neale has to go as well - with or before RJ. Jim Lorentz can come back at any time to replace Neale.
henysgol Posted August 30, 2009 Report Posted August 30, 2009 Seriously? Paul Hamilton is miles above him. So is Jim Lorentz, not that he'd want to make a comeback. Hamilton would be great, but I've listened to junior call an Otters game, he's really good and I like the resemblance to RJ. I'd put my money on RJ's son to take over.

Maybe "Oh my oh my you're gonna wanna watch that again and again on YouTube" or "Top shelf where mama hides the spray paint I like to huff."

He is not retiring is he? I am a diehard Sabres fan, watched 80 of 82 games last year but I live in California so I am out of touch with local news. Thank you. He's got one more year on his contract. I remember they said he signed a two year contract last year with the agreement he could get two weeks off during each season to rest up. While he is certainly quite a character, he doesn't seem to be the type that would announce before the season it was his last and make this season some type of farewell tour. My speculation is he's going to hang it up this season and announce it late in the season. Whenever he goes, it'll be a huge loss for hockey, all the announcers are so vanilla now.
bottlecap Posted August 31, 2009 Report Posted August 31, 2009 I'd love to see RJ stay for as long as he wants to but he's getting up there in years, the Sabres aren't making moves and the road trips get harder as you get older I'm sure. When he retires, they should hang RJ by his suspenders and make him a permanent place in the rafters. I'd like to see Hamilton take the torch. He's a longtime Sabres expert and I think he's your best choice..

Thanks for the update on his contract. I saw the same on Wikipedia and a couple other sites. So we get at least one more year...
LabattBlue Posted August 31, 2009 Report Posted August 31, 2009 personally, I dont want his son.. We need to start fresh.. Ill nominate Kevin Sylvester Not that I think he deserves it, but I just have a hunch that Sylvester has his head so far up Quinn's ass that there is no way he doesn't get the job when RJ retires.

Ding ding ding. You'd think so. But now who replaces Kevin as Sabres love child? Ray? and Andrew Peters between the benches?

nobody Posted August 31, 2009 Report Posted August 31, 2009 Once all of the Sabres games are on HD; RJ can sit in his living room and make the calls.
