bottlecap Posted August 20, 2009 Report Posted August 20, 2009 AP from what i've read is one of those very few guys who always wanted to play in Buffalo. For that, and for beating the snot out of many guys I say...I salute you AP. I know he wasn't highly skilled and took away minutes from others, but I wish the Sabres had more players that always wanted to play in Buffalo, instead of seeing it as a last resort, and more could stand up for his teammates like he did. I don't expect him to be picked up by anyone else but I may be wrong.
tom webster Posted August 20, 2009 Report Posted August 20, 2009 Huh? To answer your question, I don't think anyone should be paid to sit in the press box. IF they are not good enough to get on the ice, they probably are not good enough to be on the team. On your second point...it really does not make any sense. Whether Peters "did nothing wrong (double negative- perhaps he really did do something wrong?)" or if he volunteers his spare time to sew quilts for the elderly has got nothing to do with his ability (or lack thereof) on the ice for which he is being paid. Why should the Sabres continue to invest (whether it be $500,000 or $50 million) in a player who can't skate, doesn't hit despite his size, can't score, and can't pass. And the one role he has on the team, the ONE ROLE- that of enforcer- he can't even perform that to a respectable degree. Go back and look at the YouTube videos of Rob Ray, Brad May, and T. Domi. There is absolutely no comparison. Peters is a big, goofy, teddy bear on skates compared to the ferocity of those guys. When Ray got into a fight, it sparked the team into higher realms of achievement (as it should). Same thing with May, or Boughner, etc. The team fed off of that energy. But in all of my time watching the Sabres, there has never been a Peters "fight" that lifted the team IMHO. And if he can't even fight as he was being paid to do, THAT is why he should not be on the team. If I'm wrong for having such "lofty" ideals as having players on a team THAT CAN ACTUALLY play, well...then I guess I'm asking for too much. Sheesh... The fact of the matter is that you need a 13th forward who understands his role, knows he will only play in an emergency, knows he probably won't play in the playoffs or after the trade deadline and doesn't whine about it. You can't waste a top prospect in that position and you don't want to pay anyone more then the veteran minimum to fill that position. As to Peters specifically, he also served a valued role as player rep and as the Sabres' welcoming comittee for players like Chris Butler lst year. It is now likely that Peters will join the Devils, one of the model franchises in the NHL, but I'm sure Lou will take your advice if you give him a call.

Bmwolf21 Posted August 20, 2009 Report Posted August 20, 2009 or they just may not be good enough, period... Maybe, maybe not. But there are definitely some fans who have been spoiled by some of the great players we've had here and hold the newer players up to impossible standards. The fact of the matter is that you need a 13th forward who understands his role, knows he will only play in an emergency, knows he probably won't play in the playoffs or after the trade deadline and doesn't whine about it. gregkash Posted August 20, 2009 Report Posted August 20, 2009 No, he's not a good guy, at all. He's a complete the ice, and one suspects on it, as well. He's a marginal NHLer, to boot. In his defense, I have heard from credible sources that he's a great dressing room guy and that he treats team staff nicely. I guess the Sabres will lose those benefits. Otherwise, well, don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out, you know? (Yeah, I did like the way he went after Ottawa when Drury went down. Big deal. I think Tallinder would have fought in that instance.) Uh, check the film. Tallinder was on the ice for that fracas... he was one of the only ones NOT fighting. Him and Dany Heatley stood arm in arm watching the fights.
shrader Posted August 20, 2009 Report Posted August 20, 2009 For some, current players will never match up with legends and fan faves from the past. Some fans expect every goalie that mans the crease to be as good as Hasek; they expect every center to be as good as Bert or LaLa; or every enforcer to be as good a fighter and as tough as Rayzor. If they don't meet those lofty expectations they get branded as bums or busts or no good. And if they do meet those expectations, many will just go and find something else to complain about. Uh, check the film. Tallinder was on the ice for that fracas... he was one of the only ones NOT fighting. Him and Dany Heatley stood arm in arm watching the fights. Wasn't that Campbell?

darksabre Posted August 20, 2009 Report Posted August 20, 2009 That's true, I should go to a Sabres game some time. They play in Buffalo right? I was waiting for that. ;)
gregkash Posted August 20, 2009 Report Posted August 20, 2009 And if they do meet those expectations, many will just go and find something else to complain about. Wasn't that Campbell? Pretty sure it was Tallinder, cuz I watch that on youtube every now and again and i'm pretty sure Don Cherry brought it up to call them both cowards.

I must be thinking of something else, because I distinctly remember some kind of line brawl at one point where Campbell and a player on the other team stood side by side with their arms around each other's back laughing.

WanderingEye Posted August 20, 2009 Report Posted August 20, 2009 You are, it was a Sens game but it was Soupy and Preissing ever so gently embracing While this is true, I checked the video of the brawl and after Mair attacks Spezza and there's a huge pile of players, Tallinder and Heatley do indeed cruise into the picture with their arms around each others backs. Neither defenseman fought but all three forwards and the goalie did. Campbell and Preissing had their special moment in the next game while Mair and Neil fought:

It may have been Campbell, who knows, i'll watch the video later. I think my whole point is Andrew Peters doesn't deserve to be trashed by everyone. He gave his all for the team. Yes, his all is not good enough to warrant a spot, but at least he was 100% heart. If you could instill that heart into all our other players we'd be talking championship.

I love how the content of this sours as if someone pee'd in your cheerios and then dribbled in your coffee or something... Drop the sarcasm, or to flip your clumsy rebuttal then I guess now that he is free, and such a valuable player, then the Red Wings and Penguins will be rushing out to lock him into a 10 year, $100 million deal. Obviously no one of any impact reads this stuff, cause I have been calling for Peters to be gone for about 5 years now... On second thought, why don't you just give me his number?
LabattBlue Posted August 20, 2009 Report Posted August 20, 2009 I could not care less as long as he is gone. He sucked at the one reason he was on the Sabres and that was to be an enforcer. His "turn my head away from my opponent" fighting style became a downright embarrassment the last few years. When DR handed Peters a two year contract in 2007, it was a gift that will never be topped.

Just so you know, you're coming across as very bitter with basically everything you say in this thread. So to call out someone else for being sour doesn't quote hold the same punch to it as what someone like Blue just posted.
nobody Posted August 20, 2009 Report Posted August 20, 2009 I have nothing against Peters as a person and in fact he probably is a nice guy to hang out with at a bar. But in terms of him being a Sabre; I'm holding off on my official "good riddance" until he is signed to play for anyone else.

I'm really a nice guy. The Sabres could sign me to fill Peters former role of greeter for the younger players...

Once again the old adage is proven, when facts get in the way of your argument just bang the table and say something ridiculous. I said that at just over $500K he served a purpose. Truly, I could care less that Peters is gone but he served a valuable role while he was here just as someone else will surely step up and do the same. And Andrew Peters will get a contract from someone whose job it is to build a team.

wjag Posted August 22, 2009 Report Posted August 22, 2009 Wow, who knew the Peters thread would be one of the more interesting to read this offseason... Sure beats the heck out of the weekly whine and all the off topics... At least this one held a reasonable debate... Let me attempt to summarize the opinion of this thread: Peters served his role, No one is sad to see him go, His fighting style was atrocious, He probably was a good deal for team-anomics, He was/wasn't a good guy Now back to the offseason dribble of what's your favorite brand of underwear... Oh wait, that one has started yet.. Perhaps a poll is in order

You contradicted yourself again, and I don't see the point to continuing this any further. Please see PA Sabre Fans and LabattBlue's summary of comments after yours on pg. 4.
