deluca67 Posted August 15, 2009 Report Posted August 15, 2009 I agree. His facts may be a little shoddy, but the sentiment isn't bad. And you gotta love the energy. Just for the record, Grier and Montador are NHLers. I'll give you Grier. Not sold on Montador, I see him as a Jeff Jilson level player. Neither one is a difference maker. We can all hope that Grier brings the mythical veteran presence fans like to talk about. I fear that the reality is that he is just another third liner added to a large collection of third liners.
deluca67 Posted August 15, 2009 Report Posted August 15, 2009 I was with you till you mentioned the ISLANDERS????? What were you thinking..Change yor screename now.. Take some advice from Jerry Cantrell http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ADnDrgmgsbQ We all the know the Islander's recent history. You have to admit that they had a issue in goal and they addressed it. Is there any one here that thinks Lalime is better than Roloson or Biron. The Islanders had a hole to fill and they did. I believe we all wish the Sabres front office was as aggressive in addressing the needs of this franchise. And wishing also they would address them with quality over quantity.

I honestly think that Roloson is not really an upgrade over Lalime. There's all this talk on the board about bringing back some players from the golden era of a few years ago - don't forget though, we did NOT make the Stanley Cup back then either.
Stoner Posted August 15, 2009 Report Posted August 15, 2009 It only happens like this when said new poster feels the need to start a new thread even though what he has said has been talked about or is being talked about in other threads. It reminds me of the home schooled kid that bursts into the cocktail party and just starts talking like the adults give a crap. Still mad at the 'rents about that?

Jeff Jillson? Sometimes you try to hard. Jillson played 140 games and hit as many people in those 140 games as Montador hit in practice yesterday. Montador has played in 368 games and you will see he is a more talented Bob Boughner. I still believe that the team needs more top end talent, but if Buffalo signed Montador, Grier and McCormick on the first day of free agency people like you who think they just needed to get tougher would have been singing their praises.
X. Benedict Posted August 15, 2009 Report Posted August 15, 2009 Not missing, just not recognizing. Those are free agent signings of NHL caliber players. It's been so long since the Sabres had one I can see how the mistake can be made  Recognizing? Okee-dokee....they sign a third goaltender....but lemme see you make two NHL lines out of this mess ... ;) Doug Weight Trent Hunter Josh Bailey Kyle Okposo Jon Sim Sean Bergenheim Richard Park Blake Comeau Jeff Tambellini Tim Jackman Frans Nielsen

Yet I'm sure you can sift through the hound's breakfast of the Sabres lineup and be pretty happy. Maybe familiarity should breed more contempt?

Is there anyone here that thinks that Roloson or Biron is better than Miller? They're giving Rollie $2MM this year and $3MM next year. He's there to start when DiPietro continues to be broken. Going back to the storied Milbury tenure, the Isles have been "aggressive in addressing the needs of this franchise"; how has aggressive without a direction worked out?
red Posted August 15, 2009 Report Posted August 15, 2009 I don't know. With the latest addition of Grier, and the other additions (McCormick, Montador) and the subtractions (Numminen, Afinogenov, Peters- finally!), combined with the draft and the emphasis on size, I think we can begin to forecast the direction this team is taking. I think that the league's emphasis on physical play again after its "rules changes" from a couple years ago are what has really hurt the Sabres post-lockout and forced Darcy and the front office to remake the team from top to bottom. The Sabres were fast, explosive, and very skilled and it showed in back-to-back conference finals. They were one of the few teams well-suited for the new style of play (others being Carolina, Ottawa, help me out with the others...). Then some NHL coaches began to complain to Bettman about being constantly thrashed by an explosive team like the Sabres and the old clutching and slowing of the game began to be allowed back in. Why they took the tactic of complaining and did not go out and get their own players is beyond me. I don't believe that there was any way for Regier to predict this. If the NHL wants to bring more people into the game by making the game more wide open, but then does a 180 upon the whining of certain coaches, its really the NHL to blame for caving to pressure. Personally- I love the physical game and as long as its not the Devils style of slowing the game down (they have got to be the most boring team to watch), love the 2-1 and 3-2 contests. Big hits and great saves get me stoked! If I want 9-8 I'll watch the All Star Game (which I never do). I think the biggest critique that sticks on Darcy and LQ is how slow and how extremely conservative the Sabres have been with not only keeping their own, but more importantly in adapting to change. They have held on for too long. It almost would appear as if management was holding onto their beliefs and philosophy IN THE HOPES that it would correct itself and go back to being more wide open. I love the signings and draft thus far. At first, I was as mad as anyone that only Montador was signed. But now in retrospect with all of the other signings, a true direction of tough, physical hockey is being developed. I respected Numminen, but it was time for him to go. Spacek was solid, but I don't know how much his loss will really hurt the team. Afinogenov sold jerseys, but has eroded into nothing. I think a trade or two will be coming. Tallinder has been quoted as wanting fresh air. With his salary, I don't think it would be a bad thing to unload him. I think guys like Paille and MacArthur really need to step up or they may be part of trade bait.
inkman Posted August 15, 2009 Report Posted August 15, 2009 I love the...draft Meh...While in theory the draft was good, until those players lace them up and play in the NHL, I'll reserve judgment.
red Posted August 15, 2009 Report Posted August 15, 2009 Meh...While in theory the draft was good, until those players lace them up and play in the NHL, I'll reserve judgment. Yes, I agree with you. I will reserve judgement until one of these guys can actually make and stay in the NHL, but the new emphasis on size and toughness, grit and the like has me giddy. :D
LabattBlue Posted August 15, 2009 Report Posted August 15, 2009 No wonder it's the same eight of us going over the same territory. Am I part of the "Elite 8"?

As well as the Sabres "lack of aggression without direction" has been working.

People like you know that.
Stoner Posted August 16, 2009 Report Posted August 16, 2009 Am I part of the "Elite 8"? Yes, at least according to number of posts. Now, what the hell is this reputation business, and why am I in the black? I have always sought to have a poor reputation here. More importantly, why is spndnchz a 10? Even more importantly, why is there a pathetic lineup of horny middle aged men checking out his or her profile? Seriously, where do I vote to give someone a plus one in reputation?

I have always wondered whether the switch back to the old NHL was deliberate or just water seeking its level. I suspect, it wasn't so much a conscious thing, but more a slow erosion. The interference penalty could be called on just about every rush up the ice. I think the players, the coaches and the league gave it a two year run and they all concluded that it wasn't the best game for hockey. There wasn't enough talent out there for all teams to implement. It took the defense out of the game. I like the game the way it is.

Stoner Posted August 16, 2009 Report Posted August 16, 2009 See the little green plus with the number next to it on every post? Just click that. That's what I was afraid of. See, to me, words matter. It says "vote this post up." Was this board created in China and translated into English? "Give this post a plus-one" would be clearer and also have a hockey angle. Anyway, there's a difference between voting a post "up" and voting the poster up. And what does any of that have to do with "reputation"? I might like something BM wrote, but I sure as heck wouldn't want to see his reputation improve! :) The new version of this board still bugs me a bit. How do you warn someone?
