darksabre Posted August 13, 2009 Report Posted August 13, 2009 Between he, Ted Darling and Paul Weiland the 70s and early 80s were something to acoustically behold during a Sabres game. The games on TV were in stark to the radio call itself. Often, I turned off the sound and still do to just listen. I agree RJ could make any boring period interesting. This. We as Buffalo sports fans have truly been blessed with great play by play personnel over the years, despite our various teams not performing nearly as well. My parents still talk about how great Ted Darling was, and I can still remember Van Miller calling all the Bills games and falling asleep to R.J. calling Sabres games. R.J. will be a tough act to replace for most Sabres fans. But I think the right thing to do would be to find someone who is yet again unique, and calls the game the way it was meant to be. Don't give me some poor attempt at another R.J., give me someone with a great voice and great talent that does the job right.
cdexchange Posted August 13, 2009 Report Posted August 13, 2009 I just dread hearing a Stanley Cup winning goal at home. It would ruin the moment, at least for me. Sorry PA, but I can't think of anything else in this world that I'd rather hear. In fact, if it DID happen after RJ leaves us, my initial euphoria would soon be tempered by a twinge of sadness because I didn't hear it from RJ.

Stoner Posted August 13, 2009 Report Posted August 13, 2009 I Can't wait for that "ruined moment" Ehhh. I guess it would be OK.

Either way, unless the NHL's national TV deals change significantly, there will probably be someone else making the call on TV. So, it SHOULD work, just turn down your radio when you see Timmy going in alone. Me, I'm just hoping I don't accidentally jump over the railing when the puck goes in.
carpandean Posted August 13, 2009 Report Posted August 13, 2009 I'm telling ya, if he goes into that ridiculous scooooooooooooore routine when Thomas Vanek goes around the world and beats 52-year-old Dominik Hasek on a breakaway to win the Stanley Cup in overtime... I'm turning off the TV. I don't know about you, but it's a moot point for me ... nobody within a one-block radius will hear anything other than my friends' and my collective, "YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA *breath* AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA *breath* AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA *breath* AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA *breath* AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA *breath* AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA *breath* AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA *breath* AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!!!!!!!"

Kinky.

Good point. :) I've always had this feeling I will die within days or hours of the Sabres winning the Cup. A friend took me for a short trip in his small plane during the Sabres' run in 99. While up there, all I could think was... what the hell am I doing?!
Stoner Posted August 13, 2009 Report Posted August 13, 2009 See, here's the problem. I decided to give Mark one more listen, and here's one of his goal calls: "Oh my, my, you're gonna wanna see this one on the highlight reel. Top shelf, under the bar!" Might as well have said Cookies etc.

The cab ride, now that could get expensive.
ROC Sabres Posted August 14, 2009 Report Posted August 14, 2009 The cab ride, now that could get expensive. And if he doesn't have the 20 cents. Let it slide.

"Good musicians borrow, great musicians steal"-Miles Davis Everyone steals from everyone. I think he'll land with a big club some day,.. it just wont be the Sabres.

I think he'll land with a big club some day,.. it just wont be the Sabres. taking that analogy a few steps further, it wouldn't be cool at all if miles davis's son were making a living by playing his dad's music live and, in so doing, was failing badly in his attempts to hit the best-known notes and lines. given that goal call i heard from the london knights game, i cannot imagine him catching on with an nhl team. EDIT: p.s. i've heard that same quote before, but attributed to t.s. eliot's take on poetry. thing is, eliot never actually said that about poets. instead, what he'd written was the following: "Immature poets imitate; mature poets steal; bad poets deface what they take, and good poets make it into something better, or at least something different." I don't think Mark J. is making his dad's signature calls into something better -- different, perhaps.
