wonderbread Posted August 11, 2009 Report Posted August 11, 2009 Dumont is a proven producer. Stafford isn't. Would I take Stafford at 2mil per? Yes. Would I take J.P. over Drew if Drew wanted any more than 2mil? Oh hell yes. If this team wanted to make the playoffs this year, swapping Stafford for J.P. would certainly be a productive decision, especially for crucial power plays. you certainly are entilted to you opinion however mine is that Stafford will become more of a presence player this year. He's got enough skill. If he can put it all together he could be a force. Not saying that JP isn't solid as well. But i'd rather have the youth and the "potential".
deluca67 Posted August 11, 2009 Report Posted August 11, 2009 Good post. As far as the FO getting a clue about being too soft/small, I think we'll wait and see if another move is made to confirm this. Funny how much Grier's signing can give us that bit of hope. As far as Jean Pierre Dumont goes... I know you're kidding but... I was saying the whole 06-07 season that losing JP is much more of a burden than everyone thought. He's been decent for the Preds since. Making 4mil the next three years...I'd rather take Staff at whatever he'll make. Just my two cents. Will Grier play enough significant minutes to make a difference here?
shrader Posted August 12, 2009 Report Posted August 12, 2009 Sorry....the 7 was scored in 05-06 with the Sabres. Thanks for correcting me in such a sarcastic manner and adding so much information in the process. Hey, I was thinking later on you can head over and do my math homework or scrub my bathroom floor? http://www.nhl.com/ice/player.htm?id=8459640 I'm just joking. You'll see a lot of it around here. No big deal. But I guess you haven't read the rest of this thread if you're expecting every single post to have some sort of deep meaning.
FearTheReaper Posted August 12, 2009 Report Posted August 12, 2009 I am estatic to hear that Mike Grier is a sabre once more. I heard this news at about 8:21 this morning and it made my work day. He is basically everything this team lacks personified. Big,Gritty,a great PKer,solid defensivly, and he gives all his heart on every shift. Welcome back MIKE GRIER!!! I wonder where Grier fits in though? I dont think we will see much of change within the top 6. Vanek-Connolly-Pominville Mac/Hecht?-Roy-Stafford Grier obviouslly is bound for the thrid line. Its just a question of how it will shake out. I dont like the idea of the Goose and Grier on the same line unless that line is a full on shutdown line.Perhaps a Hecht-Goose-Grier line as the ideal shutdown line? This leaves several extra players to fill out the fourth line. Presuming no trades are made, the fourth line would consist of an alteration of Mair,Ellis,Paille,Kaleta and Mc Cormick. Now if Mc Cormick is the new Peters,he will not see much ice time. So is Paille the odd one out? I for one would like to see the General and Hecht shipped out to gie way for Kaleta to ascend to the third line. But nevertheless, this team is suddenly alot more interesting.
Eleven Posted August 12, 2009 Report Posted August 12, 2009 Will Grier play enough significant minutes to make a difference here? Let's hope he doesn't, so we can be correct at the cost of the team's success, right?
Eleven Posted August 12, 2009 Report Posted August 12, 2009 Two categories are needed. Best Goals. Biggest Goals. Only a few bridge the gap. May Day is one, it's safe to say. Same with Moments. There are Greatest Moments and Most Memorable Moments. I'd say Campbell's hit on Umberger was one of the most memorable moments in franchise history, but hardly one of the greatest. Grosek's OT goal to eliminate the Flyers is one of the Greatest Moments, but seems to have been forgotten. Weird. That certainly wasn't Max's "biggest" goal, either (wasn't there a pretty important goal against the Rags?), which leads me to believe that the ESPN vid was the Sabres prettiest goals (after about 1990, at that; there was nothing earlier). I think it would be fun to discuss the ten greatest, prettiest, biggest, etc. And Ol' Man Eastwood probably is the right guy to start such a thread...
nfreeman Posted August 12, 2009 Report Posted August 12, 2009 Will Grier play enough significant minutes to make a difference here? He played 15 minutes per game last year for the Sharks, a much better team than the Sabres. That's enough to make a difference here.
deluca67 Posted August 12, 2009 Report Posted August 12, 2009 Let's hope he doesn't, so we can be correct at the cost of the team's success, right? You know less about me than pretty much everything. Unlike yourself and others my posts aren't about being right or wrong. They are just my opinions. I've admitted being wrong in the past. If Connolly stays healthy and scores 100 pts and the Sabres make the playoffs I will give them their due. Unlike so many that will hide behind excuses if Connolly gets knocked-out or the Sabres miss the playoffs for the 6th time out of 8 years.

I won't hijack this thread, and I'm not accusing you of doing so, either. Everyone else, let's carry on. And I really think PA needs to start a top ten thread.
deluca67 Posted August 12, 2009 Report Posted August 12, 2009 He played 15 minutes per game last year for the Sharks, a much better team than the Sabres. That's enough to make a difference here. He is a third liner. Admittedly better than the collection of third and fourth liners the Sabres currently have. Can he, from the third line, make a big enough physical impact to make room for the top two lines. I like Mike Grier, I wish he was a bit younger and able to slide into at least the second line to give some type of physical presence there.
Cereal Posted August 12, 2009 Report Posted August 12, 2009 Will Grier play enough significant minutes to make a difference here? Hmm well yes, the first two lines are still a little small. What I meant was, I agree with the OP that this offseason's acquisitions (while none so far are huge difference makers) and draft picks all would correlate well with the strategy of moving away from small/soft. And that if they're working on a trade for a top-six forward with some size, then we could be on to something here. Let's keep our fingers crossed. After two 10th place seasons, a little shakeup in the top six couldn't hurt too much. Edit.. wrote this post awhile ago and it didn't submit til just now...
nobody Posted August 12, 2009 Report Posted August 12, 2009 Grier will 3rd line and also top PK line. That will give him plenty of minutes.
thesportsbuff Posted August 12, 2009 Report Posted August 12, 2009 MIKE GRIER - BACK IN BUFFALO!
ExiledInIllinois Posted August 12, 2009 Report Posted August 12, 2009 I like the signing!
Chief Enabler Posted August 12, 2009 Report Posted August 12, 2009 I would absolutely pull the trigger for Horton sacrificing Stafford. Agreed. In a heartbeat; I would like to see the Stafford generation of the Sabres end. Where's the beef! I like the Grier attitude, btw. Good Job!
Stoner Posted August 12, 2009 Report Posted August 12, 2009 Fans on Sharks message boards are ripping the guy but good. And laughing at threads like this.
SDS Posted August 12, 2009 Report Posted August 12, 2009 Fans on Sharks message boards are ripping the guy but good. And laughing at threads like this. Eh... when you have as high of expectations as they did, only to fail miserably, - everyone is on the schit list.
ROC Sabres Posted August 12, 2009 Report Posted August 12, 2009 Fans on Sharks message boards are ripping the guy but good. And laughing at threads like this. They're still sour about Campbell doing nothing for them during their playoff run and then leaving town.
deluca67 Posted August 12, 2009 Report Posted August 12, 2009 They're still sour about Campbell doing nothing for them during their playoff run and then leaving town. Are you talking Shark fans or Sabre fans?
CallawaySabres Posted August 12, 2009 Report Posted August 12, 2009 Fans on Sharks message boards are ripping the guy but good. And laughing at threads like this. The only one I went to (which is the first one listed on the list here) had nothing but great things to say about the guy....hard working, great attitude, gave 100% every night) I'll take that any day on this team. This is nothing but good news for this team.
ROC Sabres Posted August 12, 2009 Report Posted August 12, 2009 Are you talking Shark fans or Sabre fans? I would say sharks fans. Since the sabres weren't in the playoffs last year. ;)
spndnchz Posted August 12, 2009 Report Posted August 12, 2009 So we can add him to the "fight list". Rivet Mair (who is supposedly hurt and may not make camp) Goose Montador McCormick Grier
Bmwolf21 Posted August 12, 2009 Report Posted August 12, 2009 So we can add him to the "fight list". Rivet Mair (who is supposedly hurt and may not make camp) Goose Montador McCormick Grier I wouldn't count on him too much on the "fight list." He's capable, but has only averaged 1-2 fights a year since his first two years in the league, when dropped the gloves five times in each campaign. LINK
X. Benedict Posted August 12, 2009 Report Posted August 12, 2009 I wouldn't count on him too much on the "fight list." He's capable, but has only averaged 1-2 fights a year since his first two years in the league, when dropped the gloves five times in each campaign. LINK True. Although he hits clean and is a physical presence...he's not one to throw hands much these days.
